Great Pyrenees Puppies To Protect Our Off Grid Arizona Homestead

In today’s episode we explain why we we are bringing home great pyrenees puppies to protect our off grid homestead here in the high desert of Cochise County Arizona.

We are Douglas and Keri and we recently quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022, after a lot of prayer and research, we took a leap of faith and moved onto our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property from scratch with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo, and our newest additions Luna and Ursa!

We did it…we are so excited that we found and brought home our two beautiful LGDs (livestock guardian dogs). Please help us welcome our 9 week 2 day old female Great Pyrenees puppies, Luna (moon) and Ursa (great bear constellation also known as the “big dipper”). These little girls are absolutely precious and will make a wonderful addition to our homestead. Eventually, when they get big enough, they will be an important part of protecting our livestock and our property. We have a lot of coyote packs, bobcat, and javelina in the area and Great Pyrenees are amazing at deterring and protecting from these wildlife that can easily decimate the livestock on a homestead.

If you don’t know anything about LGDs, take a few minutes to do some research on them….they are absolutely incredible working dogs! This particular breed of dog, Great Pyrenees, is native to France and Italy and they have been bred for 3000 years to protect livestock. Great Pyrenees LGDs (livestock guardian dogs) live their life outside and actually live with the livestock. They are incredibly intelligent, independent, and thoughtful dogs. They are not meant to live indoors like our house dogs, Willow and Zoey. Great Pyrenees are also exceptionally good with other animals, even cats, and also known to be very good with children and are gentle with their family. They like to make their own decisions, so it could take longer than a house dog.

Our new pups, Luna and Ursa, have a large 500 square foot fenced area to keep them safe until they are big enough to fend for themselves. We chose 5 foot tall welded wire field fencing that has spacing of 2” x 4”. Inside of this safe area we built them a 4’ x 4’ x 4’ dog house. We put a locking door on it and decided to frame in ¼ hardware cloth so that they could have good air flow and also so that they could see out. We want them to be able to see if a predator does get into their penned area at night (or is even walking the fence line), so that they can make noise and alert us so we can come out and assist if needed. As the girls get bigger, the door will eventually come off and then the fence will eventually come down. Great Pyrenees are naturally nocturnal, so they are active at night and sleep more during the day. They will come into the house occasionally so that they can learn house manners.

We originally wanted Maremma Sheep Dogs, but found that they were difficult to find and the price was out of our range. Maremma Sheep Dogs are a relatively new breed here in the US and are mostly only available as purebred, registered dogs and come with a price tag of $2-3000K. We found 2 purebred female Great Pyrenees that are not registered from a reputable breeder in Michigan. The price was way (like 80%) less than a registered purebred. We will not be showing these girls. They will strictly be working dogs, but also will be part of our family and treated very well :)
