Why We Are Using Lime Plaster Over Our Cob Earthen Walls
In this episode we are going to why we are using lime plaster over our cob earthen walls.
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
We are using lime plaster over our cob earthen walls and here is why:
1. Lime is a natural, sustainable building material.
2. Lime allows the walls to "breathe" which helps regulate humidity and temperature unlike concrete which does not allow the walls to breathe and can perpetuate molds.
3. Lime is inexpensive and very long-lasting.
4. Lime is a "tried and true" building material being used as far back as 4000 B.C. when it was used to plaster the pyramids in Egypt!
The following includes affiliate links. If you click them and purchase a product, we will receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.
After we used cob to cover the earthbags, we let this cure for approximately 3 weeks. This is important and should not be skipped, even though you'll be tempted to :) Before applying the lime plaster, you'll want to spray the cob walls down with water. We used a pressurized hand pump like this one: https://amzn.to/3sX8Whf
Our lime plaster mix is made with slaked lime which is 1 part hydrated type S powdered lime to 1 part water. We soak this in a plastic tub for several days. For the first "scratch coat" seen in this video we mixed 3 parts sifted sand, 1 part slaked lime putting, and 1.5 parts water in our cement mixer for about ten minutes before applying. You'll want to spray your cob walls with water before applying the plaster. This will help the plaster to not crack. If your cob walls are too dry, it will actually pull the moisture out and cause the lime plaster to crack. Then, we troweled it on with these very nice Japanese style trowels; https://amzn.to/3N6vJxZ After application of the lime plaster, we used a stick or rock to make approximately 1/4" deep "lines" in the plaster. This will give the next layer of plaster something more to grip onto.
BOOTS! We are including a review of these boots in this video. We do not often review products unless we really, really like them and recommend them. Let me say Douglas is EXTREMELY hard on his shoes and these boots passed his quality test! He found them to be very good quality and durable. They've also got excellent tread for our rocky/sandy soil to keep from sliding around and they are waterproof and very breathable! Doug loves them and feels they are just as high quality as other much more expensive boots on the market. You can grab a pair here: https://amzn.to/47VTvVl and they are currently 40% off on that link! You can see more of their styles here: https://www.kalkal-online.com/

Why We Are Using Cob Over Our Hyperadobe Earth Bags
In this episode we are going to why we are using cob over our hyperadobe earth bags.
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
Today we are going to show you why we are using cob over our hyperadobe earth bags. My kids, Tyler and McKenzie also make an appearance and learn how to mix and apply cob! We are also going to introduce you to our friend, Jess, who will be helping us out occasionally on our builds. Jess is also originally from Washington state and grew up in the same area that Doug and I did. She moved out to Cochise County for a change of pace and to learn about natural building. We have hired her to help out occasionally and she has been a tremendous help! Most of you know hyperadobe is incredibly labor intensive, so the extra set of hands is welcome!
We are using hyperadobe to construct our chicken coop from. This is a "test" construction project before we begin our actual house so we can learn the ins and outs of hyperadobe and make sure we know what we're doing! We use hyperadobe that we purchase from Volm Companies and it is a continuous bag and is made from 100% virgin polyethylene material with a built-in additive to prevent UV deterioration.
We are using lime plaster as the finishing layer and that does not stick all that well directly to hyperadobe, so we have to put a sublayer of cob over the hyperadobe which adheres well to the bags and then the lime plaster goes over the cob after the cob has cured for 2-3 weeks. Cob is really easy and fun to work with and we have almost all of the ingredients for it on our property. It is made from clay, sand, water, and straw. The straw is chopped small (we use a leaf mulcher) and added to the mix. The straw helps give it compression strength and keeps it from cracking...kind of like rebar in concrete. If you build with cob, make sure you use straw and NOT hay because the hay will break down and contains moisture which can negatively impact your mix. You can also use local grasses that are nice and dried out. How fine you chop the straw is how you want it to look. We did not want big pieces of straw sticking out :)
After the cob cures long enough, you can go ahead and lime plaster over that. We will be using lime putty mixed with sand and doing 1 rough coat over the cob, then 1 smoother coat over the cob, then a pigmented lime wash will go over that to seal and water proof it. Stay tuned because our next video will be all about lime plaster!

Finishing Up The Chicken Tower Walls And Roof
In this episode we are going to talk about finishing up the chicken tower walls and roof
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
Today we are going to show you how the chicken coop/poultry palace is coming along. The walls are officially up and the first coating on the lime roof. We are using a 3/1 sand/lime putty mixture. The roof will eventually be getting two more coats of this to make sure it is nice and water tight!

One Year On Our Homestead and Snake Encounters
In this episode we are going to talk about one year on our homestead and snake encounters!
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
First of all, we are so sorry for those of you who were worried about us! We both just went back to work full-time and meshing our schedules has been a challenge, especially after not working for a full year! We hope to starting getting videos out to you all weekly :)
This video is going to be focused on a lot of masonry work and we are going to be talking about our first year on our off grid homestead. We have to give a huge shout out to Richard from @TerraformTogether We had a chance to tour his beautiful homestead property and also were very inspired by what he's doing! Make sure to check out his channel and give him a subscribe! He gave us the idea to slake the lime which basically is a process of soaking it in water before using it. Here is some more info on that: https://www.dictionary.com/browse/slaked-lime
We had a VERY long, exceptionally hot, and super dry summer. It seemed like it hovered at 100-105' and we hardly got any monsoon rain. What we discovered is that we could tolerate it and we survived it! We are now moving into our favorite time of year here where the temps are in the 80s during the day and 60s at night. Perfect for working around our homestead :)
We had a total of 3 Mojave rattlesnakes come into our "patio" living area in 24 hours that we had dispatch. We had to make a decision to dispatch or relocate and after a lot of research decided dispatching them was the most humane. The HUGE blessing was that our amazing Great Pyrenees Livestock Guard Dogs Ursa and Luna alerted on these snakes BIG TIME! These are dogs are absolutely amazing and so smart. We have absolutely loved having these dogs be part of our homestead and would highly recommend Pardes Family Homestead for pups if you are wanting this breed. The Chicken Coop Tower Gets An Old Fashioned Lime Plaster Roof
In this episode the chicken coop tower gets an old fashioned lime plaster roof!
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
The roof of the chicken coop tower is going on! We decided to use a simple lime mixture of sand, dirt, and lime. Doug has been slaking the lime in water and using that to mix it together. Interestingly we had a pretty good rain after he put the first layer on and not much of it washed off...keeping it wet while curing helps it to cure harder. This went over the 1/4" hardware cloth on top
Doug is sharing his perspective today on our ever changing climate and where we stand on the issue. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12

If you are looking for a very simple to use solar power station, check this one out...it's regularly $1299 and is on sale right now for $599! We have one and use it every single day! It's very simple to use and easy to carry around: https://amzn.to/3seXfS5

Meeting Some Locals And Touring A Hyperadobe Home In Progress
In this episode we are meeting some locals and touring a hyperadobe home in progress.
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
Clay and Dayna Greathouse and their daughter have opened their beautiful hyperadobe home in progress to us for a tour! They have done a beautiful job on it and it was so inspiring to see! Clay is a local Realtor in the Tombstone area and runs Arizona Desert Rat Realty. He specializes in unique, off grid, and rural properties. He and his family are Colorado natives, like us, and they wanted to live somewhere warmer also like us :) Check out Clay's Facbook page here: https://www.facebook.com/ArizonaDesertRatRealty or you can call him at 970-596-2158. Clay is one of the first people we met in this area and he is a great, trustworthy guy for your real estate needs!
We also had the honor of meeting one of our long-time viewers, Wanda! Wanda is a local and she has given us some fantastic advice and mentorship since we started our journey. We have been so fortunate to meet some incredible people out here! Wanda's grandfather settled in Tombstone in the late 1890s during the Spanish-American war and was the one who restored the OK Corral! She is a real treasure and just a wealth of advice and information. We are planning on getting some more time in with Wanda very soon!

Animal Trauma and It's SO HOT!
In this episode we are catching you up on the past 2 weeks because we've had some animal trauma and it's SO HOT!
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
(UPDATE 7/21/2023: Get our FREE EBook "9 Steps To Getting Off The Grid" at https://www.TwoRebelsOffGrid.com Having been off grid for a year now, we think these 9 steps are CRITICAL before you start your off grid journey!)
Well, we are officially in summer here in SE Arizona! We've had some animal issues over the last few weeks that we are sharing about in this video and it's also gotten very hot recently which is kind of throwing us off our game! We don't have A/C in our RV because it would mean running our gas generator constantly and we just are not willing to do that. SO, that means we are working around heat of 102-105' and honestly, we are not getting a lot done because it's just too hot to work in!
We had one of our baby turkeys that wandered into the dog/goat pen and the dogs maimed the turkey pretty badly a few weeks back. We decided to give it a chance and did not cull it immediately. The turkey had about a 4 inch square piece of skin missing from his/her back :( We used a skin replacement patch that Douglas had in his first aid kit and sprayed the wounds down really well with Vetericin and brought him/her into the bathroom for a few days. The first night we thought for sure it wouldn't make it, but it did! Well, that turkey big time REBOUNDED! He/she is now incorporated back in with the flock and is living normally again.
The other animal trauma we had was on Father's Day. We got up that morning to find only 2 of the 5 kittens outside the RV and they were not even in the enclosure anymore, but just wandering around the patio :( I (Keri) was extra sad because, well, KITTENS! So, we figured they got lost and died or were carried off by a bird of prey, or maybe a coyote. Anyhow, we bought the 2 remaining into the trailer to keep them safe with mama, Clara. 2 days later, I was cooking breakfast and saw a kitten dash by OUTSIDE...ya'll I was shocked! I went out to find one of the black kittens and he/she was PERFECTLY FINE! Not dehydrated or malnourished or anything. So, we realized mom must have relocated them because they had been climbing out of the enclosure a lot. We found the other two up near our storage sheds and they were also perfectly fine. We brought ALL of them in the RV for a day and then realized that we just need to let mama kitty do her job and put them all back out. They have been hanging out on the patio/garden area now and they are all doing great! Mom has been bringing them half dead mice every night and is teaching them to hunt...YES! At 5.5 weeks old, they are already learning to hunt...pretty amazing :)
I have been struggling with my migraine disorder the last few weeks...I have a rare form of migraine called Hemiplegic Migraine. It is a type of seizure migraine and when they get bad, it is awfully painful and usually take me down for a few days. I'm not exactly sure why they've gotten worse lately, but it is what it is and I just have to work around them.
Another interesting issue that has come up recently is wild fires...there were a few times that we thought we we may have to evacuate and that was stressful. If you are going to live out here and especially if you are going to raise animals, it's really important to have an evacuation plan and also make sure you know what your animals need during these hot days. We have found, of course, we are going through a ton more water and really checking the animals regularly to make sure they have shade and water. Stay cool everyone!

Chicken Tower OR Poultry Palace AND Hurricane Strapping
In this episode we getting back to work on our current hyperadobe project, but is it a chicken tower or a poultry palace and hurricane strapping...yeah, we are going there, so watch to find out!
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
We had a bumpy start to 2023 with a big wind storm that came through and decimated one of our storage tents! It took a bit of time to recoup from that :) We also had to move from our former location on the property due a code enforcement violation where we were a bit too close to our property line...we did get moved and we are now re-situated in our new location. The blessing is it is a MUCH better location and allows us to be closer to our building site and we are loving it!
Most of you probably know that our outdoor mouser kitty, Clara, just had 5 previous little baby kittens...they are now almost a month old and getting more active. She is a WONDERFUL mama kitty and takes very good care of them :)
We also adopted 4 baby (called "poults") turkeys last week and we have been enjoying having them around. They are quite social and our friends that we adopted them from had handled them daily to keep them friendly. They are great and fitting in well on the homestead.
Finally, we got BACK TO WORK on the chicken coop! Our joke now is whether it is a chicken coop or poultry palace? We have chickens, guinea hens, and now turkeys, so does it still qualify as a chicken coop? Who knows...time will tell :)
We are happy that we are getting to the top of the chicken tower/poultry palace and should be ready to roof it soon! Woohoo!!!

What We're Growing In Our High Desert Garden
In this episode we are sharing what we're growing in our high desert garden!
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
We've been growing things now for about 9 months on our SE Arizona high desert homestead and we've had some great results with some things while other things have been a struggle! The 3 biggest obstacles to gardening we have found so far is sun, wind, and pests!
We built a small test garden at our new location on the property. We fenced it (to keep out deer, rabbits, and our own animals), surrounded the windy sides with free pallets that we got, and then strung up several shade sails with bungee cords. We have planted some of the trees in there that will stay there permanently. The shade sails are a GAME CHANGER for us because they make such a great alternative to the old rv awning that we had to remove due to severe wind damage. We attached the sails to T-posts and it all flexes enough in the wind! We have also been recycling our rv gray (sink/shower water only) right back into the garden. We also strung some great solar lights around for nice lighting at night!
Here is what we've had great luck growing so far:
Goji berry
Artichoke
Olive
Peach
Fig
Nectarine
Potatoes; Dakota Rose, Adirondack Blue, Butterball
Sweet potatoes
Shallots
Leeks
Elephant Garlic
Sunchoke (also known as Jerusalem Artichoke)
Peppers
Tomatoes
Pomegranate
Honeysuckle
Blood Orange
Eureka Lemon
Eucalyptus
Chinese Elm
Southern Live Oak
Yew
Arizona Cyprus
Bloody Dock
Aloe Vera
Bamboo; Blue & Stone
Watermelon
Butternut Squash
Rosemary
Mint
Basil
Avocado

Can You Grow Bamboo In The Desert?
In this episode we will answer the question, Can You Grow Bamboo In The Desert?
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
We made the journey (about 1.5 hours one way) from our homestead to the Bamboo Ranch in Tucson to talk with the owner, Holly, about growing bamboo and yes, you CAN grow bamboo in the desert! If you are interested in visiting the Bamboo Ranch, check out their website here: https://www.bambooranch.net/
We never imagined we could grow bamboo in the desert...we've always pictured it as a "tropical" sort of plant, but it turns out you can grow it here...Matt and Holly have been doing it in Tucson since 1986!
We also are trying to film in interesting locations throughout Cochise County to try and switch it up a bit and show you the great places our County has to visit and give you all a visual break from our homestead :)
Today, we visited Courtland, Arizona, another Arizona ghost town with an interesting past! Courtland was founded in 1909 and was named after Courtland Young, one of the owners of the Great Western Mining Company. Courtland was founded because of the abundant copper in the area. It is in the foothills of the Dragoon mountains about 15 miles from Tombstone, Arizona. At it's peak population, Courtland had 2000 residents! There are still quite a few nice ruins you can visit including several houses, a jail (which is where we filmed from), an original sidewalk, and other ruins. Courtland is located on the Ghost Town Trail Road and we loved checking it out. You will have to look past the graffiti that people have painted over the years :(
To see more about Courtland, Arizona, check out our previous video here: https://youtu.be/BbKUJANaXqM
So, to answer the question of whether or not bamboo can grow in the desert...yes, it absolutely can! It also turns out that Richard from @TerraformTogether has also visited the Bamboo Ranch and completed a cool project with some bamboo canes! If you haven't had a chance, you'll want to check out his channel!

Homesteaders On The Rocks At Chiricahua National Monument
In this episode we explore what it's like to be homesteaders on the rocks at the Chiricahua National Monument!
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
Most of you know, our property is absolutely LOADED with rocks! You might be interested to know why having super rocky property has been a huge money saver for us :) We also decided that Chiricahua National Monument was the perfect spot to film from because it is know for it's incredible rock formations.
The original people that lived in the area were the Chiricahua Apache. They were a nomadic people and moved with the seasons. The would live in the southwest during the cooler winter months and go into the mountains during the heat of the summer months. After the Gadsden purchase of 1853, this part of Arizona because part of the U.S. Soon after, this area was settled in 1888 by the Erickson family who came from Sweden. They had 3 children and they homesteaded the land. It was not nearly as easy as us modern-day homesteaders have it! You can learn more about this beautiful area and the history of it's people here: https://www.nps.gov/chir/index.htm
WHY WE ARE GLAD WE BOUGHT ROCKY PROPERTY
*It's Biblical! Matthew 7 says, "The wise man builds his house on the rock"
*We have incredible views...typically in Arizona, the higher up you get, the more rock you're going to have, but the views are AMAZING!
*We like being on the higher ground and away from any washes or potential washes.
*The price was right! Rocky property might be less expensive than other types of property because of challenges with building.
*We would not have been able to afford to do all the things we have done with rocks if we had to buy them. Just like someone with heavily treed property has a free resource of wood, we have a free resource of rock :)
WHY YOU MIGHT NOT WANT TO BUY ROCKY PROPERTY
*Setting fencing is very challenging!
*Rocky property is not as fertile.
*It can limit your ability to dig for things like septic systems, foundations, root cellars, etc.
*It is difficult or impossible to build anything below grade like basements or swimming pools.
HERE IS HOW WE HAVE USED OUR FREE RESOURCE OF ROCKS
*Gabion basket fence posts
*Outbuilding construction (our goat house is made of rocks
*Outbuilding foundation (our chicken coop is on a rock foundation and eventually our main home will be too
*Mulch in the garden
*Retaining walls
*Water control to divert or slow water and also as the base for our culvert
*Decorative and landscaping like cairns, stepping stones, and edging
*A surface for our RV pad which helps us see snakes easier and keeps the dust and mud down
*Our driveway which also helps us see snakes easier and keeps the dust and mud down

Another Day In The Life Of Homesteaders
In this episode we will be showing you another day in the life of homesteaders AND KITTENS!!!
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
We moved! Relocating all the animals was a bit of a job, but we got it all done :) We also finished the goat house and permanent goat enclosure up the hill with us. The goats LOVE their new location...turns out our LGDs Ursa and Luna love the stone goat house too!
We have a lot of extra space on our rv pad, so we are going to plant out a garden. The best part is we can recycle our gray water right from the rv to water the trees we put in.
We have GREAT news to share too...Clara, our outdoor working cat, had kittens over the weekend!!! Clara loves to spend time with the goats and the LGDs (livestock guard dogs), so we were tiny bit worried that she was going to have them in the goat house, but she picked her cat house! She did great and we actually didn't see any of them born, but woke up on Sunday and she was happily snuggled with them in her kitty house :) She had a total of 5; 3 black and 2 gray. They are too young for us to handle, so we don't know what the boy/girl ratio is, but they are all doing great and Clara is a very good mama and there have been no losses...praying for the kittens to grow up healthy and strong :)
We've been seeing lots of animal activity around lately with the warmer temps. The jackrabbits are back, lots of deer and birds have been spotted. Doug ran across a gila monster and also a bee swarm last week! This was also the week that our little man goat, Fonzi, got castrated :-| The breeder from Lovitt's Mini Farm came over and did the deed for us. He has healed up nicely and seems to be back to normal. If you are interested in buying Nigerian Dwarf Goats or other farm animals, check them out here: https://lovittsminifarm.com/

Do Sheep AND Goats Make Great Neighbors?
In this episode we discuss Do Sheep And Goats Make Great Neighbors?
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!
We've had our goats about 6 weeks now and we've noticed some things about goats that you could compare with neighbors. What we've noticed is that the goats tend to be very selfish, hyper focused (on food mainly), obstinate, and honestly a tiny bit aggravating! Ha!!
As most of you know, we don't have sheep yet, but we've heard that they are much easier to deal with and a lot more easy going! Don't get us wrong...we love our goats, but boy can they drive you crazy sometimes :)
We've had a lot going on this week with our move "up the hill" which puts us a lot closer to where we are building everything and we are all settled now. We went ahead and built the permanent goat pen and shelter and think it turned out great! Doug put the shelter together with rocks from the property and used some cool old wood railroad ties that came from the Historic San Pedro Railroad for the roof which we thought was really neat.
We had the opportunity to meet one of you guys last week and so glad we did! Jason is moving from Colorado out here to Cochise County soon to start his off grid life. He has a great YouTube channel and I know he would be honored if you checked it out and subscribed! https://www.youtube.com/@bloomoose390/featured
Also, we have confirmed that our outdoor working kitty, Clara, is definitely pregnant and, if our math is right, she is due any day now! We have noticed she is sticking around a lot closer to the RV and asking for a lot more food than she was eating before. We can't wait for kittens!!

Don't Make This Mistake On Your Cochise County Arizona Owner Builder Opt Out Permit
In this video I will share about the BIG MISTAKE we made for the Cochise County Arizona Owner Builder Opt Out Permit!
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from the ground up!
This is an update/addendum to our earlier video on how to apply for the Cochise County Arizona Owner Builder Opt Out permit. If you missed that video, please watch it here:
https://youtu.be/N6TLpHJPem0
The online permitting system that Cochise County Arizona uses for processing and managing permits WILL NOT send you an update if your permit is getting ready to expire. We mistakenly thought that we would get either an old fashioned hard copy letter, an email, or maybe a phone call when our Temp RV permit was about to expire and that is not the case...at least not for us. You will want to make sure you are logging into their system regularly to check for any updates or documents on your permit.
The mistake we made was letting the Temp RV permit go over 6 months without having an inspection or attaching pictures. Make sure that if you are on a Temp RV permit that you log into the permitting system and attach updated progress pictures so that the County sees you are making progress on your build. If we would have done this, the whole violation would have been avoided!

Off Grid Homesteading Over 50
In today’s episode we are going to talk about off grid homesteading over 50...can it be done?
We are Douglas and Keri and we quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022, after a lot of prayer and research, we took a leap of faith and moved to our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property from scratch with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo, and our newest additions Luna and Ursa!
The bottom line answer to this is that it really depends on YOU! We want to give you some food for thought that might help you make decisions if you are considering this lifestyle.
First of all, there is a difference between homesteading and living off-grid...you do NOT have to do both, you can pick one or the other or varying degrees of one or the other. You don't have to be off grid to homestead and you don't have to homestead to be off grid. So, here are some things you will want to consider:
1. Accessibility: As we age, we will want to consider what that could look like. We are healthy and mobile now, but will we be in 20 years? We will be building one story buildings with not a lot of stairs and everything will be centrally located on our homestead.
2. Understand your limitations: Doug and I have noticed that we cannot work as hard or as long as we used to even 10 years ago. It's really important that you be patient with yourself and your body. We sometimes want to rush through and get things done, but our body is yelling NOOOO! So, be mindful of your body's limitations and how you can adapt. It doesn't mean you can't do this...you can...it just might look different for you now than it would have 10 or 20 years ago.
3. Consider medical needs and facilities: We don't have any health issues at the moment, but who knows what the future could bring. You'll want to consider how close and how difficult it might be to get to medical facilities OR to have emergency services get to you if needed.
4. Have a plan, but live for today: We believe we should be living for today, but also have a plan. The Bible teaches us this and we try hard to live this way. "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34.
5. Have a positive mindset, a positive attitude! They say you are only as old as you feel and we feel really good. We try to focus on the positive and what we are getting done and creating for ourselves and our kids. Believe me, there are days when we don't feel like we got "enough" done or we get frustrated because we have a sore back or a pulled muscle that slows us down, but we also know we need to stay positive and take care of our bodies...they have been serving us both well for over 52 years and we want to stay as healthy and injury-free as we possibly can.
So, the answer is yes, you can absolutely homestead off grid over the age of 50!

Trailblazer
In today’s episode Doug is blazing trails for Easter and finally climbs that mountain with some insight and wisdom to share.

Work On Our Off Grid Hyperadobe Chicken Coop Stopped
In today’s episode we explain why work on our off grid hyperadobe chicken coop stopped very suddenly ☹️and will reveal what the shelter is for that Douglas recently built!
Our baby chicks and Guinea Fowl arrived last week! As of today, we’ve got 36 baby chicks and Guinea Fowl. Since we are behind on finishing our coop, the babies will be staying in the RV with us for a bit. We tried a different type of brooder heater this year and they are called a “Thermo-Brooder”. This is different than the heat lamp style brooder heater that we’ve used in the past. It’s much safer than a lamp and it only uses 25 watts compared to around 250 watts for a traditional heat lamp. It’s also a safer form of heat and doesn’t run the risk of a fire light you can have with a traditional brooder heat lamp.
Work stopped on our off grid hyperadobe chicken coop because the tractor got a flat tire and needs a new innertube. We spent a whole day trying to find one of these tubes locally and were unable to, so we’ve got one on order from Amazon which means we are down the tractor for about a week or so. It’s kind of a bummer, but we are getting some other stuff done in the meantime. Also, Douglas tweaked his back a bit (nothing serious), and this time will give his back a chance to heal too 🙂In the meantime, we lubed the tractor and did an oil/filter change. She is running much better now, just needs that tire repair!
We did get the cleats installed in the coop and also got the window frames placed. We love the way the hyperadobe is coming out and it’s asolid as a rock…almost like we built with concrete. We were also able to get our scaffolding installed since we are getting to a height that is getting difficult to dump the dirt, even for 6’5” Douglas! We made a little tool to help us with tamping the sides to help with keeping the sides of the walls nice and true. Also, we did update our dirt filtering screen. We got some advice from @TerraformTogether and rebuilt the sift screen with a steel "Handy Panel" with 5 inch x 5 inch openings and then overlaid it with 1 inch hardware cloth. It’s working MUCH faster and is using the dirt much more efficiently. It is fine to have small 1 inch sized rocks in your hyperadobe bags.
The dog enclosure was recently expanded to double the size and we filled the additional shelter with baby.....
GOATS!!!
Nigerian Dwarf goats produce the highest butterfat content for the small dairy goats at 6-10% and we would like to breed and milk them eventually. They eat half of what a full sized goat does. They are registered with the ADGA which is the American Dairy Goat Association. The goats we got from Lovitts Mini Farm in Pearce, AZ https://lovittsminifarm.com/ So far, they’ve been really easy and are getting along well with all of the dogs! The dogs love the milk almost as much as the goats HA HA!!! The boy is “Fonzie”, the black/white girl is “Shirley” and the multicolor girl is “Laverne” 🙂 These goats will also help us get some of our native plants (mostly creosote) under control and we will eventually do rotational grazing with them.
Clara, our new little barn cat, is integrating well into our farmstead. She’s got a safe kitty house to sleep in and we did keep her in her house for a full seven days and we’ve been slowly letting her out and learning where we are at. She’s definitely going to make an excellent mouser!! YAY! She did get stuck up in the car engine today, so we will have to make sure and check the engine each time before starting it up!

What We've Been Working On Around Our Homestead
In today’s episode we are going to show you what we've been working on around our homestead PLUS we've got a special surprise at the end :)
We are Douglas and Keri and we recently quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022, after a lot of prayer and research, we took a leap of faith and moved to our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property from scratch with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo, and our newest additions Luna and Ursa!
Although we wish we could work on the chicken coop every single day, sometimes there are other things that snag our attention...mainly animals! Most of you know we've got chickens and guinea fowl arriving any day now and although we wish the coop was done, there is just no way we are going to have it ready for the birds in time. This is mainly due to them getting shipped to us 3 weeks before we were expecting! So, we have accepted the fact that the birds are going to have to stay with us in the RV for a short time (hopefully no more than 7-10 days!). We just cannot in good conscience put them out in the coop until the roof is on because we've got owls and birds of prey that would likely pick them off! So, we bought a huge plastic tub and built a brooder box to keep them in until the coop is ready!
Doug has built another shelter to add to our farmstead and it will be housing something special very soon...any guesses what it could be? This special thing will be in the same enclosure that the pups are currently staying in to help acclimate our livestock guard dogs to other animals.
We have great news on our kitty search...we found a local dairy that was giving away barn cats and we ended up being able to get one! We really wanted two, but we've had a real hard time finding a cat that had already been living outside to transition here. So, we brought "Clara" kitty home a few days ago. She is safely locked away in her kitty house while she learns that this is her new home. She has a nice soft blanket, a litter box, and fresh food and water. We check on her several times a day to make sure she is comfortable and give her loves. The recommendation is to keep outdoor kitties contained in their house for 5-7 days and we definitely don't want to let her out too early because she would likely run away. Clara is a young cat and there is also the possibility that she is pregnant, so we will have to watch her for signs of that. If she is pregnant, we are okay with that and would plan to get her spayed after this litter. She has grown up around dogs, livestock, and kids and she is very, very sweet. We think she will make a great addition to our growing farmstead :)

How To Lay A Hyperadobe Earthbag Step By Step
In today’s episode we are going to show you how to lay a hyperadobe earthbag step by step!
Having just finished course, or layer, number five, we found some ways to shave off a little time and know that we can now do 2 courses, or layers, in a typical day of work. Laying down hyperadobe earthbags is actually quite physical and can be especially tough on your low back. It's definitely slow going and important that you be patient with the process. This type of construction is very heavy on labor, but it is extremely economical and once it's built, it's incredibly solid…like concrete! Hyperadobe is weatherproof, rodent proof, pest proof, easy to maintain, and is efficient with heating and cooling because of the thermal mass effect of the walls. Some people living in hyperadobe in hot climates do not need air conditioning and they retain heat in the winter.
Using the tractor to do the heavy lifting makes a huge difference and it also speeds up the process significantly. Let's go ahead and break down step by step how we fill a hyper Adobe Earth bag.
1. We start by sifting our dirt for large rocks, jagged rocks, and organic material like twigs or leaves. You don't want organic material in your earthbags because as it rots and breaks down, it will leave air gaps inside of the bags. This could cause a loss of structural Integrity in those areas.
2. Next, we add 9 shovelfuls of the sifted dirt into the cement mixer and then add 3 more shovels of dirt or 3 shovels of lime.
3. Now, we add water to it as it's mixing. You don't want your mixture to be too wet because if it is, it will not hold its shape when you go to tamp it into place. Also, if the mixture is too dry, it will also not hold its shape correctly. You're going to want the consistency of a graham cracker crust mix. When you squeeze a fist of it, it should stick together decently, but you should not be able to squeeze water out of it.
4. We can fit 3 cement mixer full batches into our tractor bucket and we lift the bucket to the height we are working…it's much less tough on your back this way!
5. We tie the end of the bag off with a rebar tie and pulled the bag and all the slack up over the bucket. We secure the bag around the bucket with a big exercise band and this will keep the bag from sliding down as we fill it.
6. At this point, we fill the bucket almost to the top with the prepped soil before moving it. Once the bucket is full, you will pull the bucket along and prepare to fill it with the sifted soil again.
7. When you get to the end of your bag length, you'll tie it off We like rebar ties because they are cheap, the right length and they are really easy to work with.
8. Now you're going to tamp the bag flat and then tamp the sides square. Don't wait too long to tamp your bags, if they dry, they will be difficult to tamp or hardened into place. If this happens, you can easily wet the bag down until it's slightly damp again and then tamp it into place.
9. You will want to spray down each layer after it's been tamped before applying the next layer, or "course". The slightly damp bag will help it to adhere to the next bag that you lay onto it, allowing the clay to naturally "stick" together, which eliminates the need for using barbed wire between your courses. And that's it!

What Went Wrong Today On Our Arizona High Desert Homestead
In today’s episode we are going to show you what went wrong today on our Arizona high desert homestead!
We have been staying very focused on our hyperadobe chicken coop tower build and have now completed the plumbing (we added an extra spigot on the inside of the coop), the first layer of the dividing walls between the barnyard mix and the speciality breeds has been put down, and we completed the third course (also known as a row or a level) on the exterior wall!
Another big shout out to our friend and Realtor, Clay Greathouse from Tombstone Realty. I ran into him at the grocery store over the weekend and he gave us the suggestion of using the tractor more and using Doug’s back less on this build. We had been mixing each batch of fill dirt in the concrete mixer and then Douglas was hauling it from there in a five gallon bucket. Clay suggested we instead dump the load into the tractor bucket and bring that around to where we are working, that way we can move more dirt at a time and we can easily get 3 mixers full of dirt moved at a time. We tried this technique on Saturday and timed it and it cut our work time almost in half! Not sure why we didn’t think of this before, but thanks for the great suggestion, Clay!
The wind last night and today was intense and we had gusts up to 50 mph! We’ve had some concerns that the two storage sheds that we have up on our build site might not do so well and we were right :-( One of them actually did great, but the other one separated at the seam near the entry and also the whole tent shifted back about 9 feet exposing everything in the front to the rain, hail, snow, and wind we were getting. We also had several items that blew out of the tent and went down the hill! We couldn’t fix the tent when we got back because the winds were still high, so we put tarps down over everything and will assess the damage better in the morning when the winds are calmer!
We know we should have secured the tents better before this wind storm, but we didn’t get enough warning to do it. It really could have been so much worse than it was and fortunately the area of the tent that got exposed in the open was mostly tools and stuff that could get wet with no issues. Our neighbor friends said this is a pretty unusual wind storm and was the worst they had seen in 3 years being in the area. We are hoping that this is as bad as it can get and we plan to secure the tent better tomorrow.
Hope you enjoyed today’s episode and we always appreciate a like and subscribe if you’re finding value in what we are sharing :) We love your comments, so please comment below and share this with anyone who you think might be interested!

Red Bags Rising On Our Arizona Homestead
In today’s episode there are red bags rising on our Arizona homestead, FINALLY!
We are so happy to announce that there are red bags rising on our Arizona homestead! We continue working on the chicken coop and after another several days of very cold and very windy weather, it’s cleared up enough and warmed up enough to get started on our hyperadobe earth bags! We learned a few things today and one of the main things was that it takes a lot more time to fill the bags than we realized. We’ve never actually worked with hyperadobe bags, just watched a lot of videos of it. We knew that it was all labor involved and the bags were a tiny bit harder to work with than we anticipated. Although, our first “course” (also called a layer or a row) had a lot of things to work around like the plumbing and all of the rebar sticking up out of the foundation. Once you place the bag, it’s not super easy to move around because it’s heavy and you also don’t want to snag the bag.
Also, we realized that any rough edges on our bucket or bucket dolly needed to be covered with duct tape because they can easily snag the bag. Once the bag is snagged, its difficult to work with because the snag will continue to run and it’s hard to fix. The second time this happened, we went ahead and cut the bag and started a new bag which seems to be the best solution.
We also had an email telling us that our chicks that we ordered for delivery the week of March 27th will be shipping on March 6th instead…YIKES! So, now we are a little stressed about getting this done in time, but we are going to do our best because where would we put 40 chicks and 6 guinea fowl in our trailer ha ha!!!
Hope you enjoyed today’s episode and we always appreciate a like and subscribe if you’re finding value in what we are sharing :) We love your comments, so please comment below and share this with anyone who you think might be interested!
