We Are Miserable On The Homestead Today

Trouble on the homestead? On today’s episode, Douglas and I are driving each other nuts and we are miserable on the homestead today!

We are Douglas and Keri and we recently quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022 we took a leap of faith and moved onto our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property from scratch with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo.

Today we realized we are going a bit stir crazy in the trailer. We have had 4 days straight of freezing cold wind, rain, and lots of muddy conditions. Since we cannot work outside right now, we have been keeping ourselves busy with research and shopping and we are going to share what we’ve bought and learned.

We had purchased a Duromax HX Series 12,000/9500 Watt Dual Fuel Generator. It runs on gasoline or propane and it easily power our trailer. If you want to see what we got, check it out here: https://thd.co/3GR5Lul

We also did some research on plumbing the chicken coop and wanted to see if there was a better option for watering the chickens. We had tried lots of different waterers when we lived in Colorado and there we were using the chicken tap on waterers. We liked those because they were a lot cleaner than a bucket system, but felt like the chickens were not able to get water the way they were meant to naturally. We found these poultry water cups on Amazon and will plan on installing them into PVC plumbing in the coop. We are hoping they stay clean and they should provide a constant source of fresh, clean, accessible water for all of the poultry. We were also hoping to start cutting bottles for our bottle bricks soon, but we bought the wrong blade, so will have to wait a week for the exchange. Here is the blade we bought for the table saw: http://bit.ly/3XmNH27

In episode 73, we started sharing a bit with you about how we will plan on making an income on our homestead. One thing we did not talk about, but are very interested in, is raising honey bees. I am currently reading, “Keeping Bees With A Smile; Principles and Practice of Natural Beekeeping” by Fedor Lazutin with Leo Sharaskin. We have watched Dr. Sharaskin for many years on different YouTube channels and his method is most in line with how we want to things on our farmstead including very minimal intervention with chemicals or supplemental feeding. We want to let the bees do their work and not disturb them. We also like the horizontal hive type of bee hive that Dr. Sharaskin sells and also has free plans on his website so you can build it yourself here: www.horizontalhive.com

The last big research project and purchase we made was from www.naturesseed.com. We want to start improving our last with native forage grasses and plants. We bought several hundred pounds of seeds to plant including Sheep Forage Seeds, Poultry Forage Seeds, Bee Forage Seeds, Red Clover, White Clover, Forage Radish, and Forage Chicory. We also bought a large bag of rice hulls which helps with planting.
