Off Grid Hyperadobe Chicken Coop Tower

Today is day 1 of our off grid hyperadobe coop tower build!

Hi and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri and we recently quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022 we took a leap of faith and moved onto our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo.

This marks a huge achievement for us! Today it’s almost exactly one year to the day that we start the journey from moving from the city to our off grid property. It’s taken 12 months of planning and work to get to this place and we are feeling so blessed and energized about it! The building site has been cleared and scraped down to the solid rock layer known as kaliche. This is a great foundation to build on. Doug has spent hours on the tractor getting it to where he felt like we were ready to go!

Our chicken coop is going to be a circular tower structure and the chicken run next to it will be a rectangle. Both roofs will rainwater harvest and feed into the elevated cistern which will in turn circulate water back to the chickens. The tower is going to have a domed concrete roof over concrete mesh and the run will have a sloped metal roof. Doug drove rebar down into the caliche which will form the perimeter of the tower since the tower will be supporting a lot of weight at the low spot. For the run, we will only be doing 4 or 5 courses of earthbags and then screening to the roof with hardware cloth. We will use earthbags to level the ground and then backfill the inside of the coop to bring it level. Doug used concrete silicone to set the rebar.

We need to let this cure and then we can lay the foundation and get building!
