We Got $75 In Games for HALF PRICE from Video Games Monthly!
In this episode, we share with you how we doubled our investment and received amazing retro video games for the Nintendo GameCube and the Sega Master System with our Video Games Monthly subscription for the month of December 2022.
Collecting retro video games can be a blast, seeing your collection grow from modest to expansive is so much fun. I am lucky in that I have a great store near me in Live Action Games where I can get a lot of amazing titles. I also get to attend great gaming conventions such as the MoGameCon, Midwest Gaming Classic, and others. For those who don't have those options, or who simply want to have great titles delivered to their door, there is Video Games Monthly, a monthly blind box subscription service that can deliver anywhere from 3 to 10 retro video games right to your doorstep.
Video Games Monthly allows you to request games from systems such as the Intellivision, ColecoVision, Atari 2600, original Nintendo, Super Nintendo, even up to the most recent last Gen systems such as the Wii U, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. They have a list of games in which you can input what titles are already in your library, and you can also message them with special requests. For example, I don't want any RPGs, and others have messaged them to let them know they don't want any sports games. You can also customize what systems you want them to send you games for each month. For this month, I selected that I'd like to receive games from the Wii U, Sega Master System, and the Japanese GameCube.
What we got:
Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
Japanese GameCube
Value:$21
Biohazard 4
Japanese GameCube
Value: $23
California games
Sega Master System
Value: $32
Total approximate value: $76
I currently subscribe to the lowest tier of service from Video Games Monthly, the $35 a month level which nets me three total games. There are certain months where I may get four or five games depending on if they include a 1Up or 2Up bonus title. This is the first time in a while that I have not gotten at least a 1Up, but looking at the value of these games, I'm cool with that. I always love getting Master System games, and the fact that California Games is the blue-label variant adds additional value to it. Initially, I had thought that this was a PAL game, however doing some research and finding an excellent video from our friend The Immortal John Hancock (@johnhancockretro), I discovered this was simply a late release in the lifespan of the system. Very cool.
Speaking of Sega, getting a Sonic the Hedgehog game on GameCube is still weird to me, but I love it. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle was a multi-platform game, but in this generation of systems I either played on the PlayStation or the GameCube. The graphics are bright and colorful on this title, and the voice acting is terrific. The Japanese GameCube games came with vastly superior cases and sleeves compared to what we got here in the US, and I love the look of them. Overall, this is a great title to have added to my collection.
Probably my favorite title of the month has to be Biohazard 4, which we got here in the States as Resident Evil 4. I will admit that the first time I played any Resident Evil game was Resident Evil 4 on the Wii, and I absolutely loved the motion controls for that game. You could aim at enemies so precisely with the Wiimote, it was just an intuitive and immersive experience. I do have it for the US GameCube, and I have the Japanese version now is super fun.
How do you add to your collection of games? We don't have Goodwills locally here which sells games in-store, they ship them all to a central distribution center to sell online. I've never had great luck going to local rummage sales, but we do have the Bloomington-Normal GameCon, which will become the Illinois GameCon in 2023. Adding amazing titles such as these, for a $35 investment plus shipping I got over $75 in games, it's a great way to collect.
