The BMP-3 is a Soviet and Russian infantry fighting vehicle, successor to the BMP-1 and BMP-2. The abbreviation BMP stands for boevaya mashina pehoty (боевая машина пехоты, literally "infantry combat vehicle"). Boasting some of the heaviest firepower of any infantry fighting vehicle of the time, the BMP-3 represented a notable design departure from the BMP-2. Its 100mm gun was mounted on a two-person turret and was capable of firing laser-guided anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) as well as conventional ammo. A 30mm autocannon and three 7.62mm machine guns bolstered its firepower. The BMP-3 entered production in 1989.
