Tone Color from Nina Assimakopoulos' book The Virtuosic Flutist FluteTips 107

Tone color is one of those things that’s just a little bit ethereal. What really is tone color? And how do we do it? It’s kind of like the word nuance. But what does it mean when we play the flute?

One of the ways the you can change your tone color is by changing the shape of your embouchure.

I’m going to talk about tone color using a book titled The Virtuosic Flutist which was written by a good friend of mine named Nina Assimakopoulos. Nina gives an exercise for you to practice changing the tone color by changing your embouchure as if you were speaking 4 different vowels.

Watch me play through and describe those vowel shapes. Then I’ll put them together in movement from a piece that I will be performing sometime soon. Let me know if you can hear the different tone colors!
