Silver vs Silver-Plated North Bridge 700 vs 500 Step-Up - Flute Center Sponsored
I am doing a Flute Center trial of North Bridge Step-Up flutes. You know that I’ve done comparisons before. But this time I wanted to use the same exact headjoint, to compare a sterling silver body to a silver-plated body.
So, the headjoint is sterling silver handmade by flute artisan Chris McKenna. The intermediate level flute bodies are the North Bridge Flutes Series 700 and the Series 500. The 700 has a sterling silver body, and the 500 has a silver-plated body. The 700 also has the C# trill key. Otherwise, these flutes are identical.
This is exactly what I wanted so that I could do an “apples to apples” comparison of silver vs. silver-plated. In today’s market, there is an $1,100 difference in price between these two flutes. But can you tell the difference? I sure could.
Join me for this week’s video and let me know if you think these 2 flutes sound different from each other.
Here is a link to the flutes demonstrated in this video:

Autumn in Homeland for Solo Flute by Anže Rozman - Angela McBrearty Flute
Autumn in Homeland for Solo Flute by Anže Rozman
Performed by Dr. Angela McBrearty with backtracking provided by Anže Rozman
Houghton University Faculty Recital
February 15, 2023
CFA Recital Hall
From the composer:
This piece was written for Slovenian flutist Matej Zupan, and was premiered, by him, at the San Francisco Flute Festival 2010. The piece is nostalgic in nature and describes a summer that is slowly transforming into autumn; the trees changing colors as the wind softly takes their leaves and sweeps them off their branches and on to the forest bedding below.

Learning How to Breathe Deeply and Quickly - FluteTips 176
How are your quick breaths in the middle of a piece? Do you always take a deep full breath that fills up your support every single time?
It is difficult to train yourself to take a deep breath in the middle of a piece. We can often take a really good breath at the beginning of the piece, or after a long rest. But it is much harder to take that deep full open throat breath as you are playing. Especially when you are moving really fast, and you have only a split second to take that breath.
Deep breathing is necessary to create the air pressure that enables you to create a good tone. In this video, I will teach you how to practice taking that type of breath in the middle of a piece so that every single time you need a breath, whether slow or fast, it is always the right breath to help you play well.

Trill Fingers - FluteTips 173
Have you ever just worked on your trills? There's a really good exercise in Taffanel and Gaubert’s 17 Grande Exercises at the very end of the book that you can use to work on your trills and to learn your trills. But today I just want to talk about the fingers that you use for your trills. Because oftentimes I think we use the wrong fingers.
The bottom line: Move Your Fingers Up
Practicing trills correctly exercises your weak fingers and improves your technique.

You Can't Have a Good High Register Without Having a Really Good Low Register - FluteTips 172
You need to be thinking about your low register as the foundation for everything that comes above it. If your low register is thin and not filled out and rich, then your upper register is going to suffer.
So, what are some things that you can do to fill it out, to make it strong?
• Long tones down in that low register
• The shape of your embouchure
• Opening your jaw wider
• Putting air in your cheeks
• Using your sinus cavity
You are trying to get your high register to be rich and full and beautiful, just like your low register.
If you start with a good low note, you can match those registers and it becomes a beautiful sound that you can work with and build on all the way up.

Does the Cut of Your Lip Plate Make a Difference on a Professional Silver Flute - FCNY Sponsored
The Flute Center of New York sent me 2 beautiful Powell hand-cut sterling silver headjoints to compare the cuts of their lip plates. One headjoint has the Venti cut, the other has the Philharmonic cut. Both have a 14K gold lip plate and riser.
I compared them on the same gorgeous Powell handmade custom flute in sterling silver.
But can you hear the difference? How much resistance do you prefer?
Listen in as I comment on what I hear and feel as I play on each of these headjoints.
Have fun!

Which is Better a Silver Flute or a Gold Flute? FCNY Sponsored
The Flute Center of New York sent me a silver flute and a gold flute to test and compare to determine which one is better the silver flute or the gold flute.
Both flutes are professional model Powell flutes that are nearly identical except their silver and gold content (complete descriptions are below).
So, I will play a bit of the Cantabile et Presto, run through some scales, and test the upper and lower registers. All while giving my commentary on what I am hearing.
But I would really like to know what you hear! What do you think about the difference between the silver flute and the gold flute? Which you do you like best?

Should You Put a Professional Headjoint on an Intermediate Body? FluteTips 170
The only reason that you would consider putting a professional model handcut headjoint on an intermediate flute is to save money. If you wanted to improve your flute tone, and you had enough money to spend on a professional model flute, then you would just buy the better flute.
I did a test with my daughters Haynes Amadeus intermediate flute by swapping out the headjoint with a Powell Sterling Silver hand cut headjoint with a 14-Karat gold lip plate and riser with the Venti cut. This Powell headjoint is truly a beautiful head!
Which headjoint sounds better to you?

Evening Out Your Registers - FluteTips 169
How do you like your registers? Do you feel like you can play from the low C all the way up to the 3rd octave with the same dynamic level and the same tone quality?
It is a difficult thing to do. We usually have great low register and then the upper octaves are either too loud or we overcompensate by squeezing the embouchure.
What is the key to achieving that 3rd octave with sweetness and suppleness? It is all about one key technique. By implementing this technique to your playing, you will free up your embouchure to sound fantastic in those octaves.

How to NOT Go Flat at the End of Notes - FluteTips 168
Do you find that you go flat at the end of a long phrase?
It’s quite common when you run out of air or lose your support. But you can keep those notes on pitch even when you’re running out of air by working on tapers, keeping the airstream up, and keeping up the support – or what I like to call pressure.
Join me in today’s FluteTip as I explore these ideas.
Have fun!

Bending Pitch to Work on Intonation - FluteTips 167
We all have intonation problems, and they can occur at the worst times where you feel like you've been playing in tune and then suddenly, you're out of tune. This can occur in band, or orchestra, in a small ensemble, or just with an accompanist. We all must work on intonation, all the time.
Well, one of the ways to do it is to bend the pitch. That is, you bring the pitch up or you bring the pitch down. But we're not really saying to roll in and out. Because that can ruin your tone. We want to practice bending pitch by moving our airstream. And we use our embouchure to do that.
You can improve your intonation by learning to move your jaw, move your embouchure, and your upper lip to manipulate that airstream. This technique will you minimize your intonation issues while maintain your tone quality.
Have fun!

Fixing First Finger Problems - FluteTips 166
Many of my new students in my private studio and even my college students come to me with a first finger problem. By first finger problem, I mean that they leave their first finger down for a D, and for an E flat.
Some students leave the first finger down only when they are coming down to these notes. On the way up to these notes, the first finger correctly stays up. Other students leave the first finger down all the time.
What’s the big deal, you ask? When you’re on the 4th line D, or the 4th space Eb, if your first finger is down, you are playing the wrong note. I don’t even have to be looking at you to hear that it is the wrong note. Shocking, I know! But I used to play these wrong notes too.
This is a problem that you can fix with the middle register exercise in Taffanel & Gaubert number 7.

Loosening Your Embouchure While You Are Playing - FluteTips 165
Have you ever lost your low notes during a recital, or solo festival, or even in an ensemble? It is very common for flutists to be able to get a really rich low register in the practice room right before a performance only to lose those bottom notes on stage.
It is so frustrating to barely be able to get a good tone quality when you get to the low notes in your piece. If this has happened to you, you know exactly what I mean.
When you identify the cause of the problem, you can start working on solutions. We often lose our low register because by the time we get to the low notes our embouchure is as tight as a drum! Throw in a little performance anxiety and our air is not aimed in the right direction. Then our rich low register loses its tone quality, or worse, becomes puffs of air.
Is your embouchure stuck in that high position? Here’s some help!
Have fun!

The Difference Gold Makes on a Headjoint - FCNY Sponsored
Today I’ve partnered with the Flute Center of New York to see if you can hear the difference that gold makes on a headjoint. First, I will play a professional model sterling silver Lillian Burkart flute. This headjoint is all silver: crown, lip plate, riser, and tube.
Then I will change headjoints and demonstrate the sound with the following:
1. 14K gold riser
2. 14K gold riser and lip plate
3. 14K gold riser, lip plate, crown, and tube
I played a bit from the Mozart Concerto in G on all 4 headjoints – then put those 4 clips together at the end so you can compare side-by-side. I could definitely hear the differences. Can you?
11:57 All Silver
12:06 Gold Riser
12:16 Gold Lip Plate
12:26 All Gold

How Not to Crack on Your Middle Register Notes - FluteTips 164
I really detest cracking notes. It is one of those pet peeves that drive you crazy. One of the areas where it happens a lot is in the middle register. Those notes can often be what I call the caught-in-between sound. You know that sound when the notes isn’t quite up high enough, and it gets both a low and a high sound at the same time? I know how to fix it, but it still happens from time to time.
How about you? Does that sound ever come out of your flute? Let’s see if I can help you.
Have fun!

Concentration and Stamina in Your Playing - FluteTips 162
How is your concentration and stamina when you are performing? Some people are so good with this, and others (like me) have had to work on learning what this means. It seemingly comes so easy for some people, while for others it is hard work.
I have learned that it is a skill like any other. These areas are something that can be worked on, learned, and improved. We can learn to concentrate and make that concentration last through an entire performance, but it takes work.
You can learn these skills and improve your concentration and stamina while performing.
