The best fighter jets of the Ukrainian air force have just carried out a daring attack on Russian troops occupying the strategic Snake Island in Ukraine.

The attack marked a significant escalation of Ukraine's air campaign targeting a Russian garrison on an island in the western Black Sea, 80 miles south of the strategic Ukrainian port of Odessa.

For at least a week now, Kyiv's propeller-driven TB-2 armed drones have been waging a relentless defense suppression campaign around Snake Island. Satellite-controlled drones with their 14-pound missiles have disabled at least three air defense systems on the 110-acre island as well as two Russian patrol boats and a landing craft along the coast.

Destroying the air defenses, along with every naval ship trying to fortify the tiny island—with one wharf, helicopter landing pad, and a dozen structures—cleared the way for the twin-engine supersonic Su-27 to strike or before. Saturday.

A TB-2 was nearby, watching with a gimbal-mounted camera, as the one-seat Sukhoi—the Ukrainian air force's fastest interceptor—slipped low over the island, dropping unguided bombs. Whatever Russian troops remained on the island after the drones did their job, the Su-27 appeared to be heavily damaged.
