The only SAAB JAS 39 Gripen with Meteor BVRAAM in Southeast Asia

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has apparently been upgrading its JAS 39 Gripen C/D fighter jet since the middle of last year.

The Thai military has quietly upgraded its JAS 39 #Gripen fighter jet by #aircraft maker Saab Group.

The reason for this upgrade is to allow the Thai Gripen aircraft acquired in two groups (6+6) in 2011 to be upgraded to the latest aircraft standard, MS20.

All state-of-the-art Royal Thai Air Force aircraft are stationed at the air base in Surat Thani, southern Thailand.

Although there was no official statement from Thailand or the #Saab Group, international defense media estimated that the work to upgrade the Thai Gripen aircraft to the MS20 standard would cost US$21 million.

Saab Group only confirmed that the Thai Gripen aircraft were upgraded to the MS20 standard without providing further details.

According to information from Saab, the work to #upgrade the Gripen aircraft to the MS20 standard involves upgrading the aircraft's software and hardware capabilities to enable it to deal with threats on the ground through the use of laser-guided weapons systems.

In addition to enhancing the capability to deal with threats in the field, the MS20 standard also enhances the Gripen aircraft's ability to perform air-to-air missions through the use of the Meteor BVRAAM radar-guided air-to-air missile beyond the Air-to-Air Visual Range Missile.

The capability of standard MS20 Gripen aircraft such as those used by Thailand to carry and launch Meteor missiles is a key element of the program to upgrade the aircraft to the MS20 standard.

Claimed to be the most capable air missile in the world, the Meteor BVRAAM developed by MBDA Systems uses a ramjet propulsion system that allows it to reach speeds of up to Mach 4.

The Meteor air missile, which is over 3 meters long, has an effective range of over 100 km.
