In this episode of Know Your Stuff, we interview Tiziano Breda, who is a Central America analyst at the International Crisis Group, an independent conflict prevention organisation. We talk about the current political situation in Nicaragua, where several opponents of the government and candidates for the presidential election in November, have been arrested. We also examine how the international community has reacted - in particular the US - and why the International Crisis Group argues that external actors “should push for reforms and dialogue with the opposition while eschewing counterproductive sanctions”. Finally, we talk about what to expect from Nicaragua’s president, Daniel Ortega, who will run for a fourth consecutive term and whether it will be a fair election.
