Self-Improvement is a Drug.

Self-improvement is a drug. It can become addictive. The binging of self-help YouTube videos, books, and routines can become a lifestyle. It makes us feel like we are being productive and useful, but in actuality, we are just chasing the high of accomplishment without any real accomplishment. In a world where everything is provided to you, it makes sense why you would need to construct artificial ways of progress and movement forward.
I am not of course against all forms of self-improvement. But improvement has been conflated with change. We begin to hate ourselves when we see ourselves not stack up against others. But not each of us is a morning bird, drinker of Starbucks frappes, and go getter. Some of us stay awake late in the night researching our economy. Or researching why people today are so depressed in first-world countries. Some of us wake up at 4 am to workout. Others find the gym to be a waste of time and work in push-ups throughout the day. Our goal is to optimize our natural tendencies. This is who you are, stop trying to be like the staple carbon copy of an American worker.
