A common belief is that vanlife is inconvenient, chaotic instability. In this video, I hope to show that vanlife is whatever we make out of it. There is no requirement that just because we live in a car, we must drive to a new place every day. If one can live in an apartment, one can live in a car on the same street. Living in a car, however, often makes it hard for us to remain static, because we can choose to go to new places and spice up our lives with big adventures. But this is out of choice. I have stayed for longer periods of time smack in the middle of big cities like Paris and Berlin on prime locations, without paying rent, parking fees, nor campground fees. George Orwell would turn in his grave if he found out that government oppression has become standard enough that undercover police in unmarked vehicles pull ordinary unknowing citizens off the highway and the reason is "you were holding a phone in your hand". As if 1) the police do not have anything better to do than to go after regular people and 2) the act of pulling people over has no adverse consequences. Both assumptions are wrong. In my humble opinion; it would be better for the police to go and spend their time eating donuts if crime rates are that low than to cause long-lasting mental illness for potentially a whole family inside the car that got pulled over (being "hijacked" on the highway by armed men forcefully demanding money is not something everyone finds a pleasing experience). And the list of consequences goes on. One "detail" that was edited out from this video to save run time is the terrible traffic situation that arose from the unsafe and abnormal behavior of the cop car. Before we both drove off the highway, at least 5-6 vehicles merged in between the cop car and myself only to immediately hit the brakes just as the police did whilst waving their hands outside the window to force the car hastily out again. Several times we were driving in a slow-moving cloud of packed-in cars, confused as to what was going on. Since I didn't even know what the Dutch text meant that they were flashing in the back window, I was strongly contemplating not pulling over at all and instead call in to the "real police" while being prepared to physically push them off the road if their presence became a threat to my freedom of movement. And all this because I - an unknowing tourist passing through - was holding a phone in my hand. Seriously? I went to the Boom Festival with high expectations. But pretty much everything sucked big-time lol. They hadn't even finished building the area and walking around in the midst of construction machinery driving around building stages didn't exactly contribute to a happy and positive spirit. They won't refund money, which I think is criminal especially since the area wasn't finished and there were no shuttle busses, something I expected there to be when I purchased the ticket. Walking back and forth to camp on the spur of the moment just wasn't doable and could only be done at most once per day, even that one trip was a living nightmare. Still, my experience is highly personal, subjective and of course not all bad from start to finish. Just make sure to not go there in an owned motorhome (most people on site rented their car) and bring a teleportation device or simply sleep in a hammock lol. Spain has forbidden wild camping. Not only does Spain define camping using very narrow and ridiculous rhetoric, their armed police force have a tendency to enforce these laws despite this oppressive behavior having no other effect than to cause problems for poor harmless civilians just trying to live their free life. Other countries have similar idiot laws; in large parts of the Netherlands - for example - it is a crime to sleep in your car. This includes professional truck drivers who sleep on rest stops along the highway because they do not want to break another law putting a ceiling on how many hours they can be driving on the road without sleep. The parody. Me personally, however, have never been harassed by the police as much as I get harassed in Spain. For people living in their cars, Spain is simply out of the equation for van life. Old retired people driving expensive motorhomes from one campground to the next may find Spain a viable option for a quick mundane vacation. Freedom seeking van lifers need not bother. Should be noted that I have not stayed extensively in the Netherlands. I have however stayed long periods of time in France, Scandinavia and Germany. I can vouch for any one of these places as a much better option than Spain. Scandinavia - the world's most progressive and free part of this world - doesn't even have these laws to begin with. Much less a police force eager to waste tax money causing problems for ordinary civilians. Let's make any tendencies of a police state and corrupt anti-liberty non-intellectual politicians a thing of the past. Spread awareness, share this video!
