Ukraine Says Needs 'Fast and Versatile' Gripen Aircraft, Not A-10
Ukraine Says Needs 'Fast and Versatile' Gripen Aircraft, Not A-10
Air space over Ukraine has been contested for more than five months, replete with advanced Russian fighter jets and near-universal Russian surface-to-air missile coverage that make penetration by aging Ukrainian Air Force MiG-29s and Su-25s both risky and dangerous.
For the duration of that time, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov has asked the United States and international partners for Western combat jets and the training to fly them. U.S. officials have weighed in, but they may not be suggesting the right aircraft, a Ukrainian defense official told Air Force Magazine.
“We have been requesting combat aircraft from our partners for a long time now,” Yuriy Sak, adviser to Ukraine’s minister of defense, told Air Force Magazine by phone from Kyiv on July 21. “We need Western-standard fighter jets. We need Western-standard combat aircraft.”
Reznikov again discussed Ukraine’s battlefield needs at a July 20 virtual meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group led by Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III.
Following the meeting, U.S. Air Force leaders indicated that conversations had begun on how to provide Ukraine with Western aircraft, such as older A-10s, but Ukraine says the slower aircraft won’t fill the mission set urgently needed.

China’s Supersized Marines Could Invade Taiwan
China’s Supersized Marines Could Invade Taiwan
China’s Marines would be key in a Taiwan War: Tensions between China, the U.S., and Taiwan have risen following a visit by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the self-governing island. Renewed attention has fallen on the question of China’s ability to seize the island in a D-Day-like amphibious invasion.
Rampant speculation that a surprise invasion could occur any day now is off base. The time and effort needed to assemble an adequate force would make preparations quite obvious, as they were in the lead-up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Nonetheless, China’s military has unquestionably devoted much effort to improving its capability to undertake such a risky and costly campaign if ordered to.
One important element of those plans is the People’s Liberation Army Navy Marine Corps, or PLANMC, which has more than doubled in size since 2017. This article will review key findings from a study by Connor Kennedy for the China Maritime Studies Institute regarding the organization, mission, and methods of China’s revamped Marine Corps as well as how that related to Taiwan.

Landkreuzer P. 1000 Ratte - Germany Has Plans To Build The Biggest Tank
Nazi Germany Has Plans To Build The Biggest Tank
Landkruzer P. 1000 Ratte Is The Most Ambitious Tank Ever Invented – During the Second World War, German military thinkers certainly thought big when it came to tanks and produced some of the largest tanks ever to traverse the battlefield. That included the Tiger II, arguably the most powerful tank in the war, while there were also limited/wasted efforts to develop the Panzerkampfwagen VIII Maus, the largest tank ever built.
Landkreuzer P. 1000 Ratte – A True Landship
According to some accounts, the Landkreuzer – which was the brainchild of Krupp director Edward Grotte – was among the designs that were too ambitious to ever build. In many ways, this 1,000-tonne tank was a throwback to the original “landing program” considered by the British military during World War One. However, the British soon saw that a true land ship was not the answer – and that it led to a simpler tank, which was still massive for the era.
Germany didn't seem to get the memo, but again, its own tank program produced the A7V, a vehicle that required a crew of 18, but was occasionally upgraded to 25.

Saab’s Mighty JAS 39 Gripen Is One Hell Of A Fighter Plane
Saab’s Mighty JAS 39 Gripen Is One Hell Of A Fighter Plane.
Designed to replace the variants of the Saab 35 Viggen and Saab 37 Draken combat aircraft, Sweden’s JAS 39 Gripen was first flown in December 1988 and entered operational service with the Swedish Air Force in 1997. Developed as part of a joint effort by an industrial consortium that consisted of Saab, Saab Microwave Systems (formerly Ericsson), Volvo Aero Corporation, Saab Avitronics and FFV Aerotech, the Gripen was the first Swedish multirole combat aircraft – capable of conducting interception, ground-attack, and reconnaissance.
The fourth-generation fighter is a highly-advanced aerial platform that was developed with the latest in digital controls and weapons delivery, while also being produced as a sleek fighter to meet the strict demands of the Swedish Air Force.
History
The origins of the Saab JAS 39 Gripen (Griffen) date back to the late 1970s when the government in Stockholm began to explore the development of an aircraft that could be capable of fighter, attack and recon missions. After evaluating a number of existing foreign aircraft including the American F-16 and F-18 fighters, the Swedish Parliament decided in June 1982 to move forward with the Swedish project. A contract was signed between the Saab-led consortium and the Defence Material Administration to develop the new aircraft.
The single-engine, multirole-combat aircraft was designed with a single pilot, but the B and D versions were also developed featuring a longer canopy for a crew of two. Since being introduced in 1997, a total of 204 aircraft in three batches had been ordered by Swedish Air Forces, which to date has taken delivery of 74 aircraft. A total of 158 Gripens were produced as of 2016, and it was exported around to the globe.
Current operators include Brazil, the Czech Republic, Hungary, South Africa and Thailand, while the United Kingdom’s Empire Test Pilots’ School operates Gripens in a training capacity.

Sweden to train Ukrainian soldiers in Britain
Sweden to train Ukrainian soldiers in Britain.
The Swedish army will send up to 120 instructors to the United Kingdom to train the Ukrainian military.
That's according to a statement posted on the website of the Ministry of Defense of Sweden, Ukrinform reports.
"Between 12 August and 31 December 2022, the Swedish Armed Forces will send up to 120 instructors to the UK to conduct basic military training for Ukrainian citizens, divided into several training courses," the report said.
According to the ministry, the initiative to offer basic military training to Ukrainian citizens comes from the UK – the country has invited other partner nations in the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) and Canada to contribute. "The Government has now decided that Sweden will contribute by training Ukrainian soldiers," the ministry said.
In total, approximately 10,000 Ukrainian citizens are expected take part in the training program in the UK. A maximum of 60 Swedish instructors will be in the UK simultaneously – this is not expected to have any significant impact on the Swedish Armed Forces' other activities.

Good News For Swedish Air Force - The new Gripen comes with a Modern Look.
Saab received an order to modernize the Swedish Air Force's JAS-39 Gripen C/D.
Saab received an order from the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) to apply a modernization package to the Swedish Air Force's Gripen C/D (Svenska Flygvapnet) to keep them in active service until 2035.
As reported in the company's press release, the contract ensures continued operation of the JAS-39 C/D and provides enhanced capabilities to maintain the operational relevance of the fighter. The order value is SEK 500 million (over $52 million).
The JAS-39 C/D is a system that will be used for years to come in Sweden and other countries that have acquired Gripen. Current contracts help ensure cost-effective solutions in terms of construction, design and procurement.
“Gripen C/D is the backbone of the Swedish Armed Forces today and will continue to be for many years to come, so this is an important order in which we will ensure the continued operation and operational relevance of Gripen C/D,” said Jonas Hjelm, Head of Saab's Aeronautics business.

The Brazilian Air Force has lost at least 40% of its AMX fighters
The Brazilian Air Force has lost at least 40% of its AMX fighters
The A-1 attack aircraft, developed by Embraer and its Italian partners, had 56 delivered to the FAB, but at least 21 were decommissioned for various reasons.
The most advanced fighter aircraft ever developed in Brazil, the A-1 attack and reconnaissance aircraft has seen its fleet in the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) shrink significantly during its nearly three decades of operation.
A joint project between Embraer and Italian manufacturers Aeritalia and Aermacchi (now absorbed by the Leonardo group), AMX, as the program is called, represents a huge technological advantage for the country by allowing Brazilian teams to gain experience with more complex aircraft systems, as command via fly. -by-wire .
The AMX appeared in the late 1970s and spent the 1980s in development until the first examples were delivered to the FAB in 1989 - Italy, another jet customer, received its first fighter aircraft at the same time.
The Air Force originally intended to acquire 79 A-1 attack jets, as christened, but ended up receiving 56 units, 11 of them in the two-seat version.
Deliveries lasted until 1999 and the A-1s equipped three squadrons in the Air Force. However, delays in producing the aircraft meant there were some equipment differences between them.
For this reason, the FAB launched the A-1 upgrade program in the early 2000s, which provided standardization of the aircraft with more modern and capable equipment.
Among them are the replacement of the radar by the national model SCP-01, changes to the cockpit panel with a multifunction display, the adoption of the HOTAS (Hands on the throttle and stick) and Eye Level Display (HUD) concepts, in addition to a self-defense system with "husk" and "chaff" dispensers. beacons" and the ability to launch laser-guided smart bombs.
However, the first modern AMX, the A-1M, was not delivered to the Air Force until 2012 and eight years later only eleven aircraft were upgraded.
40% of the original fleet is downloaded.
Meanwhile, however, the FAB lost several fighters, five of them in accidents. An Airway survey also identified the 13 planes dismantled and auctioned off as second-hand in addition to the two A-1s stationed at the monument.

US to send more ammunition to Ukraine in latest aid package
US to send more ammunition to Ukraine in latest aid package.
The U.S. will send Ukraine another $550 million in weapons to fight Russia, including more ammunition for high-tech, medium-range rocket launchers and artillery systems, the Biden administration announced Monday.
The announcement includes more ammunition for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and 155mm artillery systems that Ukraine’s forces are using so effectively on the battlefield to defend their country.
“This package brings assistance to Ukraine to approximately $8.1 billion since the beginning of Russia’s brutal and unprovoked assault,” the administration announced on Monday, adding that “The people of Ukraine inspire the world as they defend their country and their freedom, and we stand with you. This marks the seventeenth drawdown from U.S. Department of Defense inventories to provide arms and equipment for Ukraine’s self-defense since August 2021.”

Can the Fire Scout Drone Change Defensive Maritime Warfare?
Can the Fire Scout Drone Change Defensive Maritime Warfare?
These autonomous drones could transmit threat data back to surface ships in time for them to deploy life-saving countermeasures.
The U.S. Navy is increasingly relying on drones and unmanned systems as reconnaissance tools able to operate within a network of nodes designed to process and transmit time-sensitive targeting data.
There is a progressive effort to quickly process incoming sensor data at the point of collection using artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled technology. This can improve efficiency and enable a drone like an MQ-8 Fire Scout to quickly identify and transmit time-sensitive data across the force to a range of nodes including surface ships, helicopters, armed drones, and fixed-wing aircraft. There is also the question of continued modernization, given the pace at which networking, data processing, and targeting technologies are emerging
“We’re actively working on building more autonomy into the mission capabilities. Operators are getting so much information from the sensors, we are working to use machine learning and AI to be able to really distill that information down to what the operator needs to see, so that they can make better decisions. This can involve telling the aircraft where to fly based on the mission picture and then respond and go to those areas, and automatically do radar collections or EOIR imagery,” Lance Eischeid, director, Fire Scout program, Northrop Grumman, told The National Interest in an interview.
There is a key intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) function the Fire Scout drone could perform as well, namely, as an aerial node linking warship command and control systems with threat data from beyond the horizon. However, the U.S. Navy has been using manned platforms since 2015. A new program, Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air (NIFC-CA), operates from U.S. Navy destroyers. It is an integrated system that uses Hawkeye surveillance planes or even F-35 fighter jets to relay threat data, such as enemy anti-ship missiles, from distances well beyond the radar ranges of surface ships. Once received this data cues a surface ship to fire an SM-6 interceptor missile to track and destroy the approaching anti-ship missile. This enables ship commanders to have more time to decide what their countermeasures will be.

Sweden's new submarine could shift the balance of power in the Baltic Sea.
Sweden's new submarine could shift the balance of power in the Baltic Sea.
The short answer is that, though Sweden was officially neutral, neutrality can have many meanings. In the case of its relations with the Warsaw Pact, the USSR feared that Sweden was leaning toward the West and would support NATO if fighting broke out. According to RAND, the general strategy was that the Soviets were hoping to not only probe Sweden's defenses, but to soften the government up so it would either not interfere or would accommodate Moscow if the Warsaw Pact began an all-out offensive against NATO.
Enter the Blekinge.
The world of 2022 is very different, but the current geopolitical situation and breakup of the international consensus that has been in place since 1992, and even 1945, has produced an eerie echo of the Cold War. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has raised the specter of armed conflict with the West, and the prospect of Finland and Sweden joining NATO raises the stakes in the Baltic beyond those of the 1980s.
This will be more than just gaining formal membership in the alliance. It will also require Sweden to integrate its forces into NATO command and control while training with other NATO countries. It will also mean that Sweden will be supporting a more aggressive foreign policy than a neutral one, posing Russia with the unpleasant prospect of the Baltic becoming a NATO lake at a time when Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared the United States Navy Russia's greatest threat.

Brazil starts talks for next Gripen batch, as Saab battles to extend Czech deal.
Brazil has entered into discussions with Sweden for a second batch of Saab Gripen E/F combat aircraft, and also appears poised to complete an earlier top-up buy of the locally designated F-39.
“Brazil has announced that they will add four aircraft immediately to the existing contract,” Saab chief executive Micael Johansson said during the company’s first-half financial results call on 21 July. “In parallel, we have started a discussion on the second batch, for another 26 aircraft.
Saab’s launch export customer for the Gripen E, Brazil in 2014 signed for an initial 36 examples: 28 single-seat F-39Es and eight two-seat F-model jets. The airframer earlier this year shipped the Brazilian air force’s first two serial production examples to the nation, where they are now supporting military certification tasks ahead of service entry later this year.
In addition to the development with Brasilia, Johansson says there are “a couple of other countries in Latin America that look very promising” as potential Gripen E customers. He did not identify the nations involved, but Saab and its regional manufacturing partner Embraer have previously named Colombia as among sales targets for the type in the region.
Closer to home, Johnasson believes that the Gripen E will in time also receive an orders boost from Stockholm, following its recent request to join NATO. “I am quite sure that Sweden will continue to have more platforms going forward, beyond 60,” he says, referring to the nation’s current production commitment.

Is Russia Using Its New Advanced Anti-Armor Missile In Ukraine?
A few days after the appearance of the first video, Russian news agencies, citing “well-informed sources,” stated that it showed the new LMUR anti-armor missile in action. The truth, however, may well be more complicated.
After all, the term 'Russian news agencies,' in this case, doesn’t mean much. They appear to have simply rewritten what users of different social networks had previously guessed and it’s likely that those “well-informed sources” never existed.

F-35 Clone? New Images Of China’s J-35 Stealth Fighter Are Out.
Last week, an image circulated online showing a variant of the Chinese Shenyang FC-31 – also sometimes referred to as the J-35. It is believed to be the first high-resolution photo of the “prototype navalized derivative” of the fifth-generation stealth aircraft. The photo featured the aircraft with gray tactical paint and subdued national insignia, along with the identification number 35003.
“J-35 Prototype 350003 & Prototype 350001,” captioned David Wang (@Nickatgreat1220), who regularly reports on Chinese military hardware.
It was last October that the modified naval variant, which had been dubbed the J-35, made its maiden flight. It has been reported that the Naval variant aircraft is intended to operate from the newly-launched Fujian (Type 003) aircraft carrier via an electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (ALS). This navalized variant is based on the second prototype of the FC-31 and features a catapult launch bar and wing-fold mechanism.
Very Detailed View.
What makes last week’s photo of the J-35 especially remarkable is that it is the highest resolution – and thus highest detailed – image of the aircraft yet published online. While images of the aircraft, including in flight, have circulated, most were low-resolution and didn’t allow observers to see crucial details.

JAS 39 Gripen: The ‘New’ NATO Jet That Makes Russia’s Air Force Sweat
JAS 39 Gripen: The ‘New’ NATO Jet That Makes Russia’s Air Force Sweat
There is much activity around the development and interest in Swedish Air Force fighter planes, among them the Saab 37 Viggen. Sweden, along with Scandinavian brother nation Finland, has made the momentous decision to join NATO. This, in turn, has unsurprisingly generated a new round interest in Swedish weapons systems and military capabilities, particularly the Viggen’s replacement, the JAS 39 Gripen.
Let’s take a further look at Sweden’s current entry into the air superiority race.
Go-Go Gripen
The JAS — standing for Jakt (air-to-air), Attack (air-to-surface), and Spaning (reconnaissance) — 39 Gripen (“griffin”), made her maiden flight on December 9, 1988, and officially entered into Swedish Air Force operational service on June 9, 1996; by 2005 she had completely replaced the Viggen. To date 271 have been built. The newer plane is also manufactured by the Saab Group (Svenska Aeroplan AktieBolag i.e. “Swedish Aeroplane Company Limited,” not to be confused with the now-defunct car company).
The Gripen is considered a 4th-Generation lightweight multirole fighter. “Lightweight” as in 14,991 pounds (6,800 kilograms) empty and 30,865 lb (14,000 kg) at max takeoff weight. These pounds/kilos are packed onto an airframe that’s 46.3 feet (14.1 meters) in length, 27.6 ft (8.4 m) in wingspan, and 14.8 ft (4.5 m) in height.

Amazing ! Brazil is seeking to increase its F-39 order with a total of 70 Gripen NG
Amazing ! Brazil is seeking to increase its F-39 order with a total of 70 Gripen NG
In a ceremony held today, April 22, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro christened two SAAB F-39 Gripen aircraft, which had just arrived in Brazil, to be entered into the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
The second batch of multi-mission aircraft arrived in Brazil on April 1. The ceremony was also attended by Defense Minister Paulo Sérgio, Commander of the Air Force, Air Lieutenant Brigadier Carlos de Almeida Baptista Junior, and members of the Air Force's highest command.
At the ceremony, the head of the FAB signaled that the Air Force was pushing to rapidly increase the number of Gripen orders. According to the commander, President Bolsonaro has approved changes to the initial contract, which will lead to an increase in the number of aircraft acquired from 36 to 40 units.
In addition, the Brigadier commented that studies have begun to acquire a second batch of Gripens of up to thirty units, as anticipated last December.
In parallel, we have started a preliminary study for the acquisition of the second batch of these aircraft to ensure that the decommissioning of the older aircraft does not cause us to lose the capacity to carry out our homeland defense missions,” said Baptista Junior.

Brasil encomenda mais jatos Gripen e cogita outra grande compra.
O Brasil encomenda mais jatos Gripen e cogita outra grande compra.
SANTIAGO, Chile — Brazil is set to order four Saab-Embraer F-39E jets in addition to the 36 already purchased in 2014 under a $4.7 billion contract. The country is also considering ordering another batch of at least 30 F-39E fighters — the local designation of the JAS 39E Gripen NG.
Sweden’s Gripen NG was officially selected in 2013 to provide the Brazilian Air Force with an advanced, fourth-generation-plus fighter jet under the F-X program. The decision followed a protracted process launched in the mid-1990s, which suffered several delays and was even suspended by then-President Fernando Henriquez Cardoso in 2002. It was restarted in 2008 by then-President Luiz da Silva.
The head of Brazil’s Air Force, Gen. Carlos de Almeida Baptista Jr., made the extra order announcement during a combat aviation celebration April 22 at the Santa Cruz Air Force Base in Rio de Janeiro.
During the event, two F-39s — received from Sweden earlier this month, raising the number of F-39s delivered to Brazil to five — were presented and declared operational. The full delivery of 36 aircraft is expected to be complete in 2024, but some experts believe it could take longer.
A second large order of the Gripen is needed to achieve a minimum fleet of 70 new fighter jets, down from the original target of 100 aircraft under the F-X program, according to a local June 2021 news report citing de Almeida shortly after he took command of the Air Force.
No price tag was given for the additional order, but experts believe it will cost Brazil about $240 million, and a potential order for 30 more could cost between $1.8 billion and $2 billion.

China Police Prohibits Students From Paying Tribute To Victims Of 2021 Henan Floods
China Police Prohibits Students From Paying Tribute To Victims Of 2021 Henan Floods
In the latest attempt to obstruct civil society in executing their rights, China on Friday prevented students from mourning the victims of the Henan flood that wreaked havoc in 2021. The Chinese Police categorically stopped students from offering prayers and flowers at the flood site and place in the city in an expression of grief. The state police urged the students to vacate the areas, saying that they were not allowed to pay tribute, a non-mainstream Hong Kong-based media said.
The report further suggested that the police actions came after residents of Zhengzhou (capital of Henan) received an unofficial message against empathising with flood victims. Meanwhile, photos and videos surfaced on Telegram showing regional police prohibiting them from laying wreaths in the flood-affected areas near Henan. This incident evidently adds to the alarming trends of curtailing human rights and freedoms in China. Meanwhile, China's Twitter-like platform Weibo on Friday was reportedly pouring with mass discontent over being stopped from carrying out social events to remember the flood victims.
Henan floods
In July 2021, "rare and severe rainfall" triggered a series of floods in China's Henan province. The torrential rains submerged underground railway tunnels, neighbours leaving people stranded in neck-deep water. Meanwhile, torrents gushed on roads after dams and reservoirs breached warning levels, causing massive landslides and houses to collapse. The region experienced rainfall equivalent to a year's average in three days. Nearly 400 people died in the Henan flood which inflicted about $18.9 billion in direct economic losses. Apart from the casualties, dozens went missing during the natural calamity that rocked the mainland.
Chinese officials indicted for concealing information on casualties during flood.
Months after the flood subsided, Chinese regional authorities were summoned by Beijing for allegedly concealing and underreporting casualties. According to a CNN report, in January this year, a dozen of officials were penalised for relaxed response to the floods and withholding crucial information after the torrential rain and flooding of Zhengzhou city. As reported by Xinhua, the accused officials were found "guilty of negligence and dereliction of duty" by the investigating committee employed by Beijing and overseen by CCP's Central Committee. "They did not tally and report casualties on a daily basis as required, and have deliberately impeded and withheld reports of up to 139 cases," the report stated.

Flash floods kill at least 21 people in southern Iran
Officials say 150 emergency responders and one aerial unit are working at the scene in the town of Estahban in Fars province.
The governor of Estahban, Yousef Kargar, said heavy rains on Friday in the central parts of Estahban county led to the flooding, according to state news agency IRNA.
Videos posted on local and social media showed cars caught in the rising waters and carried away while parents tried to rescue their children from the vehicles.
Khalil Abdollahi, head of the province’s crisis management department, told Reuters news agency at least 55 people were rescued in the flood, which submerged 15 cars.
The floods happened on a summer weekend in Iran, when families tend to head to cooler areas such as riversides, lakesides and valleys.
Drought and floods
Iran has endured repeated droughts over the past decade, but has also witnessed regular floods, a phenomenon made worse when torrential rain falls on sun-baked earth.

China Floods 2022 - China's Xinjiang warns of floods, cotton risks amid sizzling heatwaves
China's Xinjiang on Saturday warned of more flash floods and mudslides and risks to agriculture as heatwaves swept across the region, accelerating the pace of glacial melt and posing hazards for its vast cotton production.
China has been baked by above-normal summer heat since June, with some meteorologists blaming climate change. The excessively hot weather has driven up demand for electricity to cool homes, offices and factories. In agricultural regions, drought has been a concern.
Xinjiang's latest heatwaves have been particularly long lasting and widespread, Chen Chunyan, chief expert at the Xinjiang Meteorological Observatory, told state media.
She noted the extreme weather in the south and east of the region, more than twice the size of France, has already lasted for about 10 days.
Ruoqiang in the southeast of Xinjiang activated a red alert - the highest in a three-tier heat warning system - on Friday evening, forecasting temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) or more for the next 24 hours.

Chinese catastrophe! extreme summer weather and record scorching rainfall
Towns and farmlands inundated by floods, homes and roads buried by landslides, crops withering under scorching heat, hazmat-suited Covid workers collapsing from heatstroke.
Since summer began, scenes of devastation and misery have been playing out across China as the world's most populous nation grapples with an unrelenting torrent of extreme weather emergencies.
Scientists have been warning for years that the climate crisis would amplify extreme weather, making it deadlier and more frequent. Now, like much of the world, China is reeling from its impact.
Since the country's rainy season started in May, heavy rainstorms have brought severe flooding and landslides to large swathes of southern China, killing dozens of people, displacing millions and causing economic losses running into billions of yuan.
