What Makes Us Tick (1952)
After World War II a series of educational cartoons were created by John Sutherland Studios for Harding College. Initially Walt Disney had been approached to make these cartoons but referred them to Sutherland who'd been a former Walt Disney employee. Sutherland, son of a Midwestern bank president, had been worked on the story for Bambi and voiced the adult version of the title character himself. His wife was Paula Winslowe who had voiced Bambi's mother. Over the next several years, Sutherland produced this series as Fun Facts About American Business in order to convey complex economic concepts in a direct entertaining way.
At the time these cartoons were distributed by MGM and shown in movie theaters before mainstream feature films. Afterward they had a life in the school educational film market. These cartoons also featured a voice cast of prominent cartoon voice actors and were created by a group of golden age animation veterans. In recent years, animation "experts" and "academics" have condemned, dismissed, and smeared these cartoons as "anti-communist propaganda" when, in reality, they only seek to discredit them because they're just as relevant and effective today as they were at the time. Many of these cartoons feature the same cast of characters.
This cartoon is about how invention and innovation leads to making everyone's life better in an economy. Then it explores free market capitalism, supply & demand, and how successful capitalism works.
These cartoons have never been collected together in one place and we are doing so here. They should not be forgotten.

The most famous of these cartoons today is Make Mine Freedom from 1948 but there's an entire series of these shorts. This first short was directed by Bill Hanna of Joe Barbera, the creators of Tom & Jerry who'd later co-found the first major TV animation studio. It was originally more than double the length and called The Secret of American Prosperity but was edited down and retitled Make Mine Freedom. The alternate title is a reference to the popular soft drink slogan "Make Mine Moxie" and was a catchphrase in 1930's and 40's pop culture.
Here, in the inaugural cartoon, we see John Q. Public confront snake oil salesmen Dr Utopia selling his flimflam scam of Ism to the American public. The cartoon explores the contrast of totalitarianism with constitutional freedom.

Founding Fathers Fridays - More Black Heroes of The American Revolution (June 25, 2010)
The Glenn Beck Program was a weekday TV show that aired daily at 5 PM on the Fox News Channel. It was hosted by talk radio show host Glenn Beck who's local radio show went national in the wake of 9/11. That event forever tainted the flavor of this series as it dug into current events locating the seeds from history that were coming to fruition in then current times. In 2006, Beck also began doing a TV show with CNN Headline News and in 2009 he moved to Fox News where he continued to do this show until 2011. Shortly after he founded GBTV that later became BlazeTV.
On some of these shows, Glenn invited experts to come on and educate his audience on American history. It was the first time many learned these things forgotten nuggets of history that have been erased by progressives and rewritten. One of the most well remembered series of these such shows was Founding Fathers Fridays from 2010. Each week Glenn and a panel of guests would discuss a different founder or group of founders and share their stories with America. It was also when many Americans first learned of David Barton of Wallbuilders who had been archiving such content about American history for years.
The left hated these shows since they couldn't refute the facts so they sought to smear, mock, or "discredit" anyone who appeared on them with varying degrees of success. In one instance, they successfully got a book by Barton pulled by the publisher, Thomas Nelson, about Thomas Jefferson because of his affiliation with Glenn Beck. That book, and several by other authors, was likely the fruit of the interest in our history inspired by these Founding Fathers Fridays shows.
Since no archive of these evergreen education topics exists online, we have collected the entire run of Founding Fathers Fridays episodes here so this history is not forgotten. We have also linked to the books cited in each episode in case anyone would like to do further study on their own.
In this episode Glenn is joined by historian/author David Baton to discuss even more of the black patriots that the leftists have erased from history. This is the only topic in this series that received a sequel episode because it's such an important topic.

In this episode Glenn is joined by historian/author Peter Lillback, Rev Jerry Falwell, Jr. and historian/author Burton Folsom where they discuss the progressive movent and how they initiated a campaign of revisionist history.

Walt Disney's Happiest Millionaire Comes To Hollywood (1967)
Voice of Disneyland Dick Tufeld his theatrical featurette was a newsreel released to advertise the original release of The Happiest Millionaire. This historical document shows what it was like on the night of June 23, 1967 when the film premiered at the Pantages Theater for a special screening to raise money for Walt's school, Calarts. A string of popular celebrities of the era are seen as well as a Disney rarity; a walk around character of George the Alligator from the film. It's a historical record of the time period.
Happiest Millionaire was hoped to be the first of a string of musicals kicked off by Mary Poppins but it wasn't as popular as Mary Poppins was. Walt had recently passed away and some felt the film lacked his editing touch. Walt still saw his own relationship with his daughters in the relationship between the father and his own daughter depicted in the film. This is a great piece of Walt Disney history.

BBC's Whicker's World - Pixie Dust On Goody-Goody Land (1971)
Whicker's World was a BBC TV News Magazine that ran from 1959-1994 hosted by British journalist Alan Whicker. Each season would be a series of shows about the exploits of Alan Whicker in a different region of the world. In 1971 he did a season in the Caribbean and ran this episode on the soon to be opened Walt Disney World. It's a bit of a hit-piece and condescending of American culture and Walt Disney, however, we have included it in this archive because it shows what both Florida and Walt Disney World looked like before it opened. This rare footage is historical and invaluable even though this broadcast is negative toward Americans, Walt Disney, and Walt Disney World. It just goes to prove these negative types have always existed. There are still glimpses at what Walt Disney Productions was like at the time. It would have been interesting to have followed up with some of these Florida residents a few decades later and see if any had changed their tune. If you can look passed the snark you'll see a few things you hadn't before.

Jim Henson Presents Little Mermaid's Island - Episode 1: Sebastian's Birthday (1990)
Little Mermaid's Island is a proposed TV series for The Disney Channel that was produced by Jim Henson during the time his company was going into a merger with The Walt Disney Company. At the time, places to plug in Jim Henson's talents into different areas of the Walt Disney Company were being explored. The Little Mermaid was already generating buzz for being a very unique film before its release, so other venues to use these characters on a scale never seen before were in development. Little Mermaid's Island was hoped to be a Disney Channel series in the vein of Fraggle Rock or Sesame Street using The Little Mermaid characters.
Like all Jim Henson productions, the puppets were built by Jim Henson's Creature Shop and he put his core group of talent on the project. Four songs were planned for each episode with songwriters assigned to the project (when the series wasn't picked up, some of these written songs were later repurposed for Sesame Street episodes.)
Samuel E. Wright and Buddy Hackett reprised the voices of their characters from the original film while Jim Cummings voiced the new character Scales the musical Sea Dragon. Scales later appeared in some Little Mermaid storybooks from the time. Flounder was also given a twin sister, Sandy (whom also appeared in storybooks from the time.) It's unclear who voiced Flotsam, Jetsam, Flounder, or Sandy.
Marietta DePrima was cast as Ariel. She had appeared on a few sitcoms and other TV programs and continued to after the pilots were shot.
Clive Revill was cast as Sir Grimsby. In this reimagining, Grimsby is a retired admiral who mentors Ariel on the human world and Max is his dog. Revill had a Walt Disney career providing voice work in various productions as well as co-starring in One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing. He most famous role, however, is as the original Emperor Palpatine in the Empire Strikes Back before George Lucas replaced him with Ian McDiarmid.
In this episode Sebastian thinks everyone forgot about his birthday.
Some of the Little Mermaid Muppets appeared in the Walt Disney World Very Merry and Happy Easter Parades because they could present the characters in scale.
In the end, Jim Henson died and no further development with this series continued. When Disney did produce a TV series inspired by The Little Mermaid, it would be animated and a Saturday morning series on CBS. The format of Little Mermaid's Island was used for the Beauty & the Beast spinoff series Sing Me A Story with Belle. In that series, Belle ran the local bookshop populated with puppet characters and she "read" stories from her books illustrated by vintage Walt Disney cartoons. Some of the knowledge gained from this testing of the waters was also applied to the Disney Channel series Adventures in Wonderland.
The two Little Mermaid's Island pilots were never released, not even as a home video or TV specials and have only ever been seen by Jim Henson buffs and Walt Disney historians. We present them here as part of the Walt Disney history story.
