Boundaries to Respect - Teach 'All' Things
God's Boundaries
The mission of the disciples of Christ was to go into the world and teach by word and example 'all things' that Jesus had taught. Today, we live in a society that is embracing values that stand in stark opposition to the truth of scripture, and those values that conform to reality as Jesus instructed.
As a result, we face a challenge similar to that of our ancestors in the faith who lived 2,000 years ago. Through the power of God's spirit we must understand the boundaries that we must respect. We must determine those ideas and actions that we must resist at all costs — what is 'unclean' according to the Word of God. We must know what is acceptable to God — what is 'clean.'

Jesus our Passover — A Lamb without Blemish
Christian’s at Odds with Christ?
Most Christians would agree that Jesus set an example that we should emulate. They believe that Jesus loves us. And, they might even ask themselves, “What would Jesus do?”
Yet astonishingly, many Christians who say they believe the bible is God’s word, don’t believe what it says. They believe faith is more important than which faith you might embrace. Many don’t believe there is absolute moral truth. And a surprising 50% of Christians in a recent survey believe Christ was human and that he sinned. So what is the reality? Was he a “Passover lamb without blemish — or not?”

Syncretism — Tolerating Lies?
Sometimes the truth is 'hard to swallow' so people settle for a convenient syncretism — a comforting blend of truth and lies. Jesus had spoken to his disciples and followers about 'drinking his blood and eating his body.' But what he said was difficult to understand, even offensive, and as a result many stopped following Jesus. They did not understand that the Passover symbols of bread and wine were given to represent Jesus' death, his body and blood. It was only through this sacrifice that he could give the gift of eternal life to all who trusted in him.
Jesus also spoke a hard truth to the Samaritans, who thought they were following God's will in their religious worship. But the reality was that they had a long history of syncretism, blending the truth of God with their traditions.

Finding True Love - God's Love and a Royal Wedding
Preferring What God Prefers
The apostle Paul wrote that love is being sincere, and active in our service to God. It is real or genuine and without hypocrisy. Love hates what is evil and holds on tightly to what is good. And, love is first in Paul’s list of the attributes of God’s spirit. This kind of love goes beyond the brotherly love of family and friends. God is love, and his love is the all-encompassing principle behind all of his laws.

Fruit of the Spirit — Christian Joy
In 2012 the challenges facing the West loomed large: from the fiscal cliff and economic free fall to the massacre of school children, But perhaps the issues of 2012 pale in comparison with what has happened in this past decade. It is evident in 2022 that these events in our world can rob of us joy. But what brings godly joy in the face of such trials and challenges. How can we be filled with Christian joy — chara, that God promises through the power of His spirit? Jeff Patton explains how God plans to make our joy complete.

Fruit of the Spirit — Peace of God
World leaders realize, "It is a moral imperative to pursue peace." Yet, the Jews and Palestinians seek vainly for an elusive peace. Peace is something that the winter holiday season focuses on, yet the world has precious little peace. Why do we lack peace? What were the conditions that were to produce peace in a nation and between nations? How is the Peace of God going to have an impact on nations, and individuals, especially those who call themselves Christians - spiritual Jews?

Fruit of the Spirit — Patience is Staying-Power
Steadfastness and staying-power, that’s Makrothumia, the godly quality of long-suffering. The scriptures give us hope as we realize the depth of God’s patience towards us. Then it gives us guidance to know how we are to express this quality in our lives as Christians – children of our Father, emulating Him.

Fruit of the Spirit — Self Control
In our world a lack of self-control can cause the fall of great leaders, like General Petraeus. As disciples of Christ we too, must exercise self-control, but it is not merely a self-mastery that originates within ourselves. The Greek scriptures give us insight into “kratos” the dominion that proceeds from within oneself, but not by oneself. God is the source of this mastery, that we must exercise in order to fulfill His purpose for us.

Power of a Biblical Worldview — Patrick in Ireland
Biblical Worldview: A Mystery Revealed
Over the centuries from before the time of Moses the biblical worldview has defined reality from the Creator’s perspective. God has kept his secret things, his mysteries, and given to his children those things that he has revealed. Both Matthew and Paul wrote about the mystery that has been revealed to the few and kept secret from the world. This revelation has been given that we might know how to obey God and fulfill our purpose. Yet most people, even Christians, reject this biblical worldview. So what can we learn from Patrick and his life dedicated to promoting the biblical worldview?

Power of the Biblical Worldview — Remember Amalek
When we remember the long history of Amalek and consider the time of Esther and Mordecai, we become aware of the dark forces in the world. These forces are constantly warring against those who are standing for godly values. Amalek’s story reminds us of the bitterness, hatred, and jealousy that motivates those who despise God’s ways. So where are we in this story today?

Power of the Biblical Worldview — God Does the Improbable
God Does the Improbable
Most people live their daily lives with no consideration for what God has done or continues to do. So it would surprise them to know how God works — how God does the improbable. But, those who have faith, who trust in God, believe that God will give them victory over death. Is there anything more ‘improbable’ than that? Our spiritual ancestors understood God’s power to reward those who seek him. So, they didn’t just believe he exists. They believed in his power to intervene and do the improbable in their lives. Do you?

Power of a Biblical Worldview — Esther and Purim
Esther and Purim
Power of a Biblical Worldview
The scriptures, the source of the biblical worldview, claim to be “God-breathed.” They offer God’s revelation of the reality of the world and our role in His plan. In teaching believers “how to live right” the scriptures challenge us to fulfill two overarching commands. “Live by every word of God” and “Bring every thought into captivity.” This must be done in order to do our part in fulfilling Christ’s will and accomplishing His purpose. But, this cannot be done, except that we have faith as a sure foundation — and this faith is strengthened as we read the stories of our ancestors in the faith.

Fruit of the Spirit — God's Good Fruit
When we look at our society are we seeing “good,” morally virtuous behaviour? Is our world “good,” a thing of beauty and quality? Knowing that God is the source of all things that are good, both morally and qualitatively, how can we reflect God’s goodness when we walk with Him, though we live in a world that may seem unfamiliar with the goodness of God. What we do is a result of who we are in our hearts and minds, whether good or bad. Will we choose to be good on the inside, as God is good, so we may produce good fruit?

Petitions, Prayers, Intercessions and Thanksgiving
God hears the petitions and prayers of his people. Whether we are in personal distress, or our nations are facing daunting foes, our prayers can make all the difference. Hezekiah, the King of Judah, knew this to be true when the Assyrians attacked Jerusalem. Earlier, Hezekiah had been on his death bed, but God had heard his prayers and seen his tears, and healed him of a fatal illness. So when Sennacharib's army began to demolish the cities of Judah, Hezekiah knew where to turn for help.

Fruit of the Spirit — Goodness of God
We often speak of “good” people, meaning those who are nice, easy going, helpful. Yet the idea of goodness in the scriptures is much more than this and is unique to God. So how is God good? And how can we be good as God is good? Jeff Patton examines the concepts of”agathos” and “kalos” in the scriptures to explain these different facets of godly goodness, a fruit of the spirit.

Living in the Presence of God
From the beginning the Lord's intent was that his people would live in the presence of God, and become holy as God is holy. He desired a close intimate family relationship with those he would call to dwell with him. He walked and talked with Abraham, he spoke to his people Israel from the mountain top, and he conferred directly with Moses and the elders of the nation. Are we living in God's presence, fully aware of his desires for us?

Nature of Lies — Deceivers and the Deceived
What is the nature of lies and why do people tell and believe lies? The scriptures give us keen insights into this issue. He hates those whose lying lips are a testimony to their arrogance and contempt for God and those they deceive.

The Prophets — Moses' Message for Our Day
Disciples of Moses?
The Pharisees of Jesus’ day thought of themselves as disciples of Moses. They thought they knew Moses’ message, but they were wrong.
Jesus consistently exposed the Pharisees’ hypocrisy. For though they made a great show of fastidiously tithing on thyme leaves, an insignificant matter, in reality they were cheats and cons. They had avoided the fly in their meal, but had proverbially “swallowed the camel.” The politically correct crowd of the time claimed Moses’ message as their own, but the truth was quite the opposite. They lacked the justice, mercy, or faith that Moses had taught. None of these hypocritical people kept the law, the teachings God delivered through Moses. In fact, they were plotting to kill Jesus, the one who was trying to correct their lack of understanding. Jesus had not come to destroy the law or the prophets, but to make the full intent of these writings known. The people would reap what they were sowing, just as Moses prophesied. The apostle Paul encountered similar self-righteous attitudes when confronting the Jewish religious leadership that challenged his ministry to the Gentiles. Are we or our modern religious leaders guilty of holding similar attitudes towards God’s law?

Adversity - Persevere in a Time of Trouble
The prophet Isaiah gives us hope beyond the present adversity and a vision of the future when the Lord of Lords will reign in justice and truth. Meanwhile, we need to look to the scripture to understand God's view on persevering through times of adversity. God did not promise his followers a life of ease, but rather he gives us the hope of the strength and wisdom to make good decisions in times of trouble. Jesus' Olivet prophecy, and his instructions to his disciples provide a snapshot of the kind of trouble we will need to face. But God also provides hope and encouragement for the present and promises of a bright future for those who trust in him.

The Prophets — Amos Message to Rulers
Amos Speaks Truth to Power
Amos, the prophet, understood that the Lord God loved his people, even though they had rebelled time after time. So God had commissioned Amos, a farmer, to take a message to the leaders of the Northern Ten Tribes of Israel in Samaria. The Lord was giving them both a warning, and a message of hope. Amos knew that the Lord had chosen Israel to bring the light of truth and hope to the world. But they could not do that task unless they were willing to walk in agreement with God. So Amos, was tasked with speaking God’s truth to the powerful leaders of the day, who had forgotten God.

The Prophets — Hosea Speaks Truth to Power
Hosea Speaks to Political Turmoil
Hosea witnessed the decline and ultimate fall of the 10 tribe confederation of Israel, and his messages resonate with us today. Decades earlier the once united Kingdom that had flourished under the reigns of David and Solomon became divided into two warring factions. The ten northern tribes led by Ephraim chose Samaria as their stronghold. The 3 tribes under the Davidic dynasty in the south continued to be ruled from Jerusalem. But it wasn’t long before the northern kingdom dissolved into political chaos. Learn the import of Hosea's message for today.
