Most people probably haven’t heard of the Black Hebrew Israelites. Those who have encountered them in American cities likely remember them as nothing more than street preachers in tacky garments, incoherently ranting on street corners. But in recent years they have been gaining notoriety. During the viral standoff at the Lincoln Memorial with the Covington Catholic students, the confrontation started with Black Hebrew Israelites hurling insults at the students, calling them “a bunch of incest babies” and “dirty ass little crackers“. In December 2019, a gunman who adhered to an extreme version of Black Hebrew ideology shot up a Kosher supermarket in New Jersey.

Demas was a trusted member of the apostle Paul’s ministry team. Paul said of him, “Epaphras, my fellow prisoner greets you, as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow laborers” (Philemon 23-24). Demas is even mentioned before Luke, author of Luke and Acts! Paul mentions him again in Col 4:14, also in a positive light. About five years later (65-66 A.D.), shortly before he was martyred, Paul wrote 2 Timothy. In that letter he had bad news about Demas

The definition of restitution is restoring something to the one who has lost it, helping them recover from damage we have inflicted. It’s not a new concept, so let’s take a look at the concept of restitution in the Bible. (You might want to grab your Bible or pull up the Bible app on your phone to follow along.)

No one wants to be a Judas. I would argue that even Judas didn’t set out to be a “Judas” – he wanted his life to count, not to end in tragedy or to become a pariah because of his betrayal of Jesus.
