Episode 203: The Delusions That Destroy Liberty: Insights From Trenchard and Gordon
In this thought-provoking episode of "And If Love Remains", hosts Mike Leavitt and Joe Wolverton dive deep into the timeless wisdom found in Cato's Letter No. 19, written by Thomas Gordon in 1721. The letter discusses the powerful influence of popular affection and antipathy towards particular men, and how this shapes politics and government.
Mike and Joe engage in a lively discussion, drawing fascinating parallels between the stately tyrants described in the letter and modern day political leaders. They explore how the delusions and imaginations of the masses are exploited, leading to a deluded populace cheerfully submitting to tyranny - as long as it's perpetrated by "their guy".
The hosts argue persuasively that the signs described in the letter - leaders aggrandizing themselves while mocking and impoverishing the people - are clear evidence that liberty is not truly established in America today. They issue a rallying cry to break free from partisan delusions, pursue real education and virtue, and follow in the footsteps of the founding fathers who boldly stood against tyranny.
This episode is a must-listen for anyone concerned about the state of freedom and politics in modern America. Mike and Joe's witty rapport and incisive analysis cast new light on centuries-old wisdom, making it startlingly relevant to our times.

Episode 201 - We Let This Happen: Joe Wolverton
Key Points of the Discussion
1. Democratic Despotism: The conversation starts with a critique of contemporary society's drift towards what is termed "Democratic despotism," where the government heavily regulates every aspect of life, essentially defining the totality of individual existence within a framework of omnipresent rules and regulations.
2. Totalitarianism and Liberty: They argue that modern society lives under a form of totalitarianism disguised as democracy, where every facet of life is regulated by the government, which they claim is the antithesis of true liberty.
3. Historical Perspectives on Tyranny: The discussion delves into historical texts and authors (e.g., Étienne de La Boétie, Alexis de Tocqueville, James Madison) to draw parallels between past and present forms of government, emphasizing how historical insights can illuminate current political and social conditions.
4. The Role of Education: A significant portion of the conversation is dedicated to the critical role of education in shaping individuals' perceptions of freedom and government. They lament the current state of education, which they view as indoctrination rather than enlightenment, leading to a populace that is unable to conceive of true liberty.
5. Virtue and Governance: The podcast highlights the importance of virtue, both in individuals and in leaders, for the functioning of a free society. It suggests that without virtue, society is susceptible to tyranny, as individuals without self-governance cannot effectively govern a nation.
6. Self-Governance and Responsibility: The discussion emphasizes the concept of self-governance, both on a personal and societal level. It argues for a society where individuals are responsible for their actions and governance is a reflection of the collective virtue and wisdom of its people.
7. Critique of Modern Society: Throughout the podcast, there is a continuous critique of modern society's loss of liberty, virtue, and responsibility, leading to a passive acceptance of tyranny under the guise of security and convenience.
8. Call to Action: The podcast concludes with a call to action, urging individuals to educate themselves and their offspring outside the prevailing system, in hopes of cultivating a generation that values and understands liberty, thereby capable of resisting tyranny.
Conclusion
The podcast "And if Love Remains" featuring Mike Leavitt and Joe Wolverton provides a thought-provoking analysis of contemporary society's drift towards totalitarianism, framed within a historical and philosophical context. By drawing on historical texts and theories, they critique the current educational system, emphasize the importance of virtue and self-governance, and call for a return to genuine liberty. The conversation serves as a call to action, urging listeners to seek education and virtue as the foundations of a free society.

Episode 199 - Joe Wolverton: Drinking From The Source
Joe Wolverton returns to And If Love Remains! @teacherofliberty
Joe's interview with Dr. Jonathon Scott: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk4Xmiap3XQ
#liberty #education
Show Notes:
- Discussion of the podcast "And If Love Remains" hosted by Mike Leavitt
- Guest Dr. Joey Wolverton discusses the importance of understanding the principles the Founding Fathers based the country on
- They talk about various philosophers and thinkers that influenced the Founders like Algernon Sydney, Niccolò Machiavelli, Hugo Grotius
- The show emphasizes reading original sources from Sydney, Grotius, Plutarch etc. to truly understand the foundation of America
- They criticize mainstream conservative pundits for lack of depth on founding principles
- Dr. Wolverton issues a "homework assignment" to read Thomas Gordon's "Independent Whig" letters
- Discussion of how reading great works impacts you by "marinating" in the ideas
- The necessity of sacrifice for timeless principles, using examples like Algernon Sydney and the Scottish Covenanters
Summary:
Mike Leavitt, host of the podcast “And If Love Remains,” interviews guest Dr. Joey Wolverton about the importance of understanding and upholding the core principles that influenced the Founding Fathers. They emphasize that simply claiming affinity for the Constitution and Founders is meaningless without actually studying the sources and thinkers they drew from.
Dr. Wolverton points out names in the index of The Federalist Papers like Algernon Sydney, Hugo Grotius, and Plutarch, challenging listeners about why these names were so influential. He stresses the need to understand the philosophy in sources like Sydney’s Discourses Concerning Government instead of just reading commentary about them. The hosts criticize mainstream conservative pundits for lack of depth on the actual foundations of the American republic.
A core message is that only through reading original sources can citizens truly grasp the principles that guided the Founders. Dr. Wolverton says that despite unprecedented access to information now, too many settle for “drinking downstream” instead of making the effort to go directly to the source. He uses the metaphor of a mountain spring - one can picnic nicely beside the downstream flow, but must climb up to taste the pure, cool water bubbling straight from the earth.
Similarly with works like Grotius’ writing on war and peace - reading just 10 pages would give more meaningful context for current events than anything modern commentators are saying. Dr. Wolverton issues a “homework assignment” for listeners to read Thomas Gordon’s “Independent Whig” letters from the 1720s and experience how they still perfectly describe political realities today.
They emphasize how profound works change you through “marinating” deeply in the contained ideas over time. This helps explain why the Founders could just reference authors like Sydney or Grotius without explanation - their entire culture was steeped in studying such thinkers. Loss of this shared context handicaps modern citizens trying to uphold the republican experiment.
Sacrificing for timeless principles is another key theme. Using examples like Algernon Sydney and the Scottish Covenanters, they highlight how standing firmly for truth - even to death - resonated powerfully with the Founding generation. It’s not just what great minds wrote, but how the authors lived and died that made them beloved exemplars to guide America’s founders through turmoil. Mike Leavitt concludes by saying if modern Americans also read what the founders read, perhaps they would rediscover the courage to do what the founders did.

Episode 197 - Thinking Well and The Liberty Seminar with Kerry Baldwin
An essential aspect of living a good and free life is the skill of thinking well. This skill in NOT taught in schools. Kerry Baldwin has founded The Liberty Seminar to fill that gap. From their website:
"The Liberty Seminar is grounded in Socratic practice, which is a time-tested way of learning to think well. Founded by Socrates in ancient Greece, and developed over time into a form of pedagogy, inquiry and dialogue have proven useful in improving critical thinking skills. The Liberty Seminar promotes productive dialogue, civil discourse, and discovery. This is a skill that is learned, and must be practiced or it is lost."
https://mereliberty.com/membership/courses/
Kerry Baldwin is an independent researcher and writer with a B.A. in Philosophy from Arizona State University. In addition to my content and courses here on my website, MereLiberty.com, She’s also a regular contributor for the Libertarian Christian Institute.
Her writing focuses on libertarian philosophy and reformed theology and aimed at the educated layperson; challenging readers to rethink prevailing paradigms in politics, theology, and culture. She is a confessionally Reformed Christian orthodox Presbyterian in the tradition of J. Gresham Machen (1881 – 1937), an outspoken libertarian and defender of Christian orthodoxy.
She became a libertarian, like so many others have in recent years, through exposure to the ideas of Ron Paul and a re-acquaintance with the US Constitution. In late 2016, she was introduced to the works of Roderick T. Long, Gary Chartier, and Gerard Casey (among others), and became convinced of anarchism. She is a reformed libertarian anarchist and hold that to be properly grounded in Reformed Christian convictions, and find an alternative to patriarchialism, feminism, egalitarianism, and complementarianism in a Reformed perspective.
She is a single, homeschooling mother of three. She enjoys outdoor activities in the Jemez mountains near her home, and stereotypically introverted hobbies such as puzzles and brain teasers, reading, and learning more about herbal and nutritional medicine. She enjoys studying Reformational Philosophy by way of Roy Clouser, and appreciate the theology of Meredith Kline, Lee Irons, and Dutch theologians such as Herman Bavinck and Abraham Kuyper.

Episode 188 - The Halloween Poem by Pumpkin Rot
A fun thing for Halloween - I'll be reciting some great Halloween poems. Our final poem is The Halloween Poem by Pumpkin Rot. #poem #halloween #hauntedstories #poetry #emilydickinson #literature
The Halloween Poem
Pumpkin Rot
He ran out of work and rushed to the store.
Then sped to his home and shot through his door.
With pumpkins and candy and black cardboard cats.
With cornstalks and devils and tiny witch hats.
He strung purple lights and soft orange crepe.
He hung paper bats with two-sided tape.
He gutted the pumpkins, the best in the bin.
He stabbed each some eyes, a nose, and a grin.
He rushed to the lawn – The Front Yard of Fear.
And set up his zombies he built through the year.
He constructed his graveyard with tombstones of foam,
And placed a cloth ghost in its gloomy crypt home.
He dressed his new scarecrow with a hat and a coat,
And staked in a post for a sign that he wrote:
Beware Ye!
Go Back!
Not Safe!
He laughed a small laugh and smiled with pride.
Then scattered some leaves and ran back inside.
He heated up cider and warmed up some pie.
He colored white frosting with goblin-green dye.
He filled giant bowls with popcorn and treats,
Toffee and chocolates and soft sugared sweets.
He changed from his suit and slicked back his hair.
He donned a black cloak and sat in his chair.
He popped in his fangs and gave them a bite.
Then smiled sharp teeth and waited for night.
Now that his planning and hard work was done,
He listened for sounds of laughter and fun!
He imagined kids running in white ghostly sheets.
Hobos and monsters on shadowy streets!
With masks made of plastic and rubber and paint.
He thought he heard children distant and faint!
He pictured their parents, excited and proud,
Escorting small creatures, eager and loud!
They’d spot his great house, then gather and flock.
They’d block up the street and clog up the block!
They’d line up for hours for a look and a treat.
He thought he heard sounds of scurrying feet!
***
It was only dry leaves swept along by the wind.
He breathed out a sigh, his proud smile thinned.
His dreams and his hopes of Halloween fame
Blew away with the leaves. Nobody came.

A fun thing for Halloween - I'll be reciting some great Halloween poems. Continuing with Emily Dickinson'sBecause I Could Not Stop For Death. #poem#halloween#hauntedstories#poetry #emilydickinson #literature
Because I could not stop for Death
Emily Dickinson
Because I could not stop for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.
We slowly drove – He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility –
We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess – in the Ring –
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –
We passed the Setting Sun –
Or rather – He passed us –
The Dews drew quivering and chill –
For only Gossamer, my Gown –
My Tippet – only Tulle –
We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground –
The Roof was scarcely visible –
The Cornice – in the Ground –
Since then – 'tis Centuries – and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity –
