Philosopher Michael Sandel | Who Merits to Govern Us? – Lecture
Who should govern us? In the current climate of resentment against authority and elites, who are best equipped to rule our country? Should our governments always consist of the best and the brightest? Or should we rather aim at regimes that are representing the citizens both on a social-economic and an educational level? Learn from one of the world’s renowned philosophers Michael Sandel, who will shed his light on these and related questions.

Michael Sandel: Democracy's Discontent. SCRIPTS Lecture, 05 June 23, Freie Universität Berlin
Public Lecture & Discussion with Michael J. Sandel, Political Philosopher, Author, Harvard University. Hosted by Stefan Gosepath, Prof. of Practical Philosophy, Freie Universität Berlin.
Societies like the U.S. are facing a significant democracy problem, with unprecedented divisions fueled by social media, populism, social inequality, unrest in response to racial violence and the intensification of individual isolation during the global pandemic. Insufficiently regulated by governments, the financialized global economy creates winners and losers and fuels toxic politics, with devastating consequences for our democracies. This is the recently updated and expanded account of "democracy's discontent", by the well-known political philosopher Michael J. Sandel. His widely debated book of that title is now available in German. To reinvigorate democracy and detoxify politics, Sandel calls for an alternative to the current neoliberal vision of the economy, one that empowers citizens as participants in a shared public life.
Speakers:
Michael J. Sandel is a Professor of Political Philosophy at Harvard University. His work links up enduring themes of political philosophy to the most vexing moral and civic questions of our time. Sandel's writings on topics such as justice, ethics, democracy, and markets have gained a global readership. His online lecture series on Justice has been viewed by tens of millions of people around the world, making him one of the most popular moral philosophers today.
Stefan Gosepath is Professor of Practical philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin and co-director of the collegiate research group 'Justitia Amplificata'. He is principal investigator at the Cluster of Excellence SCRIPTS as well as at further interdisciplinary research projects in Berlin. Gosepath's area of expertise is the link between moral philosophy and political theory. His research focuses on the role of equality and justice in political contexts and the tension between democracy and moral rights. He is a full member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz.

About SCRIPTS
The Cluster of Excellence “Contestations of the Liberal Script (SCRIPTS)” is a research consortium that analyses why the liberal model of order has fallen into crisis despite its political, economic, and social achievements. Interdisciplinary research teams investigate why alternative concepts of social order are on rise, how these contestations differ from earlier contestation, and what the consequences are for the global challenges of our time. SCRIPTS is hosted by the Freie Universität Berlin and unites 8 major Berlin-based research institutions

Justice: What's The Right Thing To Do? Episode 02: "PUTTING A PRICE TAG ON LIFE"
PART ONE: PUTTING A PRICE TAG ON LIFE
Today, companies and governments often use Jeremy Benthams utilitarian logic under the name of cost-benefit analysis. Sandel presents some contemporary cases in which cost-benefit analysis was used to put a dollar value on human life. The cases give rise to several objections to the utilitarian logic of seeking the greatest good for the greatest number. Should we always give more weight to the happiness of a majority, even if the majority is cruel or ignoble? Is it possible to sum up and compare all values using a common measure like money?
PART TWO: HOW TO MEASURE PLEASURE
Sandel introduces J.S. Mill, a utilitarian philosopher who attempts to defend utilitarianism against the objections raised by critics of the doctrine. Mill argues that seeking the greatest good for the greatest number is compatible with protecting individual rights, and that utilitarianism can make room for a distinction between higher and lower pleasures. Mills idea is that the higher pleasure is always the pleasure preferred by a well-informed majority. Sandel tests this theory by playing video clips from three very different forms of entertainment: Shakespeares Hamlet, the reality show Fear Factor, and The Simpsons. Students debate which experience provides the higher pleasure, and whether Mills defense of utilitarianism is successful.

Justice: What's The Right Thing To Do? Episode 01 "THE MORAL SIDE OF MURDER"
PART ONE: THE MORAL SIDE OF MURDER
If you had to choose between (1) killing one person to save the lives of five others and (2) doing nothing even though you knew that five people would die right before your eyes if you did nothing—what would you do? What would be the right thing to do? Thats the hypothetical scenario Professor Michael Sandel uses to launch his course on moral reasoning. After the majority of students votes for killing the one person in order to save the lives of five others, Sandel presents three similar moral conundrums—each one artfully designed to make the decision more difficult. As students stand up to defend their conflicting choices, it becomes clear that the assumptions behind our moral reasoning are often contradictory, and the question of what is right and what is wrong is not always black and white.
PART TWO: THE CASE FOR CANNIBALISM
Sandel introduces the principles of utilitarian philosopher, Jeremy Bentham, with a famous nineteenth century legal case involving a shipwrecked crew of four. After nineteen days lost at sea, the captain decides to kill the weakest amongst them, the young cabin boy, so that the rest can feed on his blood and body to survive. The case sets up a classroom debate about the moral validity of utilitarianism—and its doctrine that the right thing to do is whatever produces "the greatest good for the greatest number."

Capitalism vs. Socialism: A Soho Forum Debate
Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines.
---------
That proposition was the subject of a November 5, 2019, debate hosted by the Soho Forum, a monthly debate series sponsored by Reason. Arguing in favor of the resolution was Richard D. Wolff, an economist at the University of Massachusetts and the author, most recently, of Understanding Marxism. Taking the other side was former Barron's economics editor Gene Epstein, who is also the Soho Forum's co-founder and director. Reason's Nick Gillespie served as moderator.
It was an Oxford-style debate, in which the audience votes on the resolution at the beginning and end of the event; the side that gains the most ground is victorious. It was a packed house, with about 450 people in attendance. The pre-debate vote found that 25 percent of the audience agreed that socialism was preferable to capitalism, 49.5 percent picked capitalism as the better system, and 25.5 percent were undecided. Despite a technical problem at the event itself, the Soho Forum was able to recover the final vote totals, which saw support for socialism drop by half a percentage point and support for capitalism increase to 71 percent.
