Vinyl artifact: George Winston ~ Ballads and Blues 1972
Are you familiar with George Winston? I wasn't, until I played this amazing record.

Vinyl artifact: Roy Clark & Buck Trent – Pair Of Fives (1975)
Nashville at first decided that Roy Clark should be a country crooner like Johnny Cash. But his true talent is on the guitar and banjo, as witness this instrumental album. Unlike most 1970s country music, no strings, either!

Vinyl artifact: John Barry – From Russia With Love (1963)
This soundtrack is quiet and understated. James Bond takes you to exotic locales, and so does John Barry in this brilliant score.

Vinyl artifact: Pete Fountain's New Orleans At Midnight (1963)
My thrift store had a few albums by Pete Fountain. This vinyl record was a surprise, beautiful from beginning to end. Move over, Squidward!
I couldn't find a channel of Pete's but here is a compilation from Bandcamp:

Vinyl Artifact: Les Elgart And His Orchestra – The Elgart Touch (1956)
There are two types of big bang music from the 1950s: Music that only was relatable to the audience at the time, and music that is timeless. Les Elgart is the latter, simply beautiful arrangements from beginning to end.

Vinyl Artifact: Command Records - Bongos feat. Tony Mottola (1959)
Back in the 1950s, you would go to the record shop and jump for joy at a new release from Command Records. They would innovate the latest instruments and sound effects and set it to current songs, but with a twist.

This movie soundtrack is a perfect combination of orchestral and Beatles tracks. A masterpiece.

Vinyl Artifact: Al Di Miola - Land of the Midnight Sun (1976)
What was great about the 1970s was that you could just see an artist's name on a new album cover "Al Di Miola", and pick it up as something you know you'd like.

Vinyl Artifact: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly - Ennio Morricone (1967)
30 years ago I gave this vinyl record away to a lifelong vinyl collector. He now has another turntable and told me he never plays soundtracks. Thirty years later, this precise album returns home to me. Still plays nice!

Vinyl artifact: Tevya and his Daughters (1957)
Before Fiddler on the Roof directed by Norman Jewison, before Zero Mostel's Fiddler on the Roof Broadway soundtrack, there was a play by Arnold Perl which organized the Russian stories of Sholem Aleichem. This soundtrack does not have the musical score that people associate with the movie, but focuses on the stories such as the arranged marriage of Tevye's daughter Tzeitel to the butcher Lazar Wolf. Enjoy this vinyl artifact from long ago!

Vinyl artifact: Zero Mostel's Fiddler on the Roof (1964)
Before the theatrical version of Fiddler directed by Norman Jewison, there was the broadway show. These are the songs familiar to movie audiences. Thanks to the broadway cast's performances on this album, the movie actors got their rehearsal on how to sound for the film. L'chaim!

Vinyl Artifact: Goldfinger -John Barry (1964)
Goldfinger is the soundtrack of the 1964 film of the same name, the third film in the James Bond film series. Side 1 is stronger than Side 2, which has some rather annoying "action" tracks. But the album closes with two pleasing tracks that reprise the movie themes.

Vinyl Artifact: Patton by Jerry Goldsmith
The record opens and closes with speeches by actor George C Scott. The opening is an amalgam of speeches that General Patton gave to troops awaiting deployment to North Africa and Europe during World War II. He told General Omar Bradley (the historical consultant for the film) that he sprinkled course swearing through his speeches to the troops "so they'd remember it".
The record closes with a quote from Patton's diary, which he had planned to turn into a book on his wartime experiences, but never got to write as he died in an auto accident of mysterious circumstances in liberated Germany.

Vinyl artifact: Caldera - Time and Chance (1978)
This vinyl record is the reason I am glad I bought a retro turntable from U-Turn turntables. A beautiful jazz fusion album by a band I never heard of, sort of like early Genesis.

Vinyl Artifact: Jimmy Driftwood ~ Beautiful Buffalo River (1978)
Jimmy Driftwood was a prolific artist with many albums of folk music. This was from his later years but still has that bite of a brilliant songwriter, the Indian (native American) songs set in the Wild West are a highlight as well.

Vinyl Artifact: The Beatles - Help! (1965)
Rick Beato over at youtube cannot even play an acoustic cover of a Beatles song without the copyright police shutting his channel down. Nothing is being stolen! Beatles fans will still buy your albums, how silly to delete content of people sharing unique content. In my case, a vinyl record that still plays all the way through even those it reflects 69 years worth of handling. That's amazing!
I enjoyed this album because it is half Beatles songs, half movie soundtrack instrumental cues, including a wonderful "bhangra" instrumental of A Hard Day's Night (their first movie). Also pay attention to the non-Beatles singles on this album, all are beautiful.

The Vinyl Artifact series examines a vinyl record in full, with all the history that the decades have put on it through various owners. This original 1967 album is in rough shape, yet still plays all the way through side 2. Not an audiophile recording in any sense, just a memory of a memory. No copyright infringement intended, support the artists.
