canine tracks in snow, wolf?
I was out snowmobiling in the woods this afternoon and came across these rather large canine tracks. Too big to be coyote, not sure if they are dog or wolf tracks. We live in an area where wolves are. What do you think?

Egg Washer
I got this idea from this site http://fivegallonideas.com/chicken-egg-washer/ The site has detailed instructions on how to made the egg washer.
After using it we found that it works best as a "pre-washer". Stubborn stains won't come off without physically wiping them off.

My home made aluminum can crusher
This is my home made aluminum can crusher attachment for 37 ton Forest King log splitter
I initially made the box out of wood just as a kind of proto-type and plan to make a welded steel box later.
I will be getting rid of this temporary hopper and fashioning a better one later also.
During the first operations the cans were packing so tight into the box the removal of the compacted cans were difficult so I removed a board to drive them out with a sledge hammer and 2 x 4. Will be changing this feature later also.
This is not a real serious effort here, just me playing around with a way to crush a lot the cans I get on my garbage routes. I'm in the garbage business.

Dog vs Raven
Ravens frequently come to scavenge food scraps around our poultry yard. Lokum our Kangal Dog definitely views it as a threat. Esma his partner could care a less. Before I took these video's the Raven had been circling looking for a safe place to land and Lokum was going bonkers as the bird would fly right over his head. No doubt he would chomp the black scavenger if he could. The dog is doing his job protecting his territory from trespassers.

A Log Cabin Getaway
We have had many satisfied guests over the years. Here are what a few of them had to say:
“The pictures do not do the cabin justice! The cabin was charming, the little touches and details were awesome! It was extremely cozy, the kitchen was small but once you get a flow of the space it’s functional. Griddle, coffee makers, hot plate, grill, toaster and toaster oven were all offered and we cooked all our meals there. The hot tub upstairs was just amazing! We would recommend this place over and over, and we are already planning a trip back up! Thank you Russell and family for providing such a beautiful, clean space to get away for a few days!”
------------------------------------------------------------------------
“The cabin was perfect, and cozy! Everything was clean, and very well set up. Jacuzzi tub was huge, and relaxing. The most comfortable futon couch, I've ever sat on. I was tempted to sleep on it. Coffee/Cocoa provided. (Ground coffee for the 10-cup maker, or K-Cups for the single cup maker. Electric Grill/Griddle was perfect for bacon and eggs. Toaster oven worked great for our own personal homemade pizzas. You really only need to bring food/drinks and your personals, because the cabin is supplied with basically anything you could need. Definitely recommend this place for a relaxing weekend! I'd take a weekend here, over a hotel... Any Day!”
------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The cabin is very charming, creatively decorated very clean and well supplied. The owners Russ and Kelly have done a wonderful job and were very helpful with any question we had. They made us feel very welcome not only to their cabin but to their farm. This is a great place for families or couples, with gorgeous scenery close by and supper club dining opportunities galore. We saw 7 eagles in four days as well a a Pine Marten during our day trips."

A Northwoods Tradition
It’s been beautiful weather for making maple syrup. It takes approximately 40 gallons of sap cooked down to make 1 gallon of maple syrup. Some people ask ‘isn’t that a lot of work”? It is a lot of work if you count the cost in time and labor, but there many rewards that really can’t be calculated. For one thing it’s a tradition that goes back a long, long ways. I love the fact that as we are boiling sap there are countless other families in the region doing the exact same thing. Next, maple syrup season is the time when winter is losing its icy grip and the feeling of sitting outside around an open fire is hard to put in words after being bundled up in layers all winter! Then there is time spent in the woods putting in taps, hanging buckets or bags, collecting fire wood and collecting sap. So the cost vs. reward really can’t be measured in price. The delectable finished product is quite priceless especially when we sit down throughout the year to pancake breakfasts topped with pure homemade maple syrup that we produced with our own efforts. We made that! And we know ALL what it took to get it to that final stage! Truly priceless!

Aggressive Pup - Video 3 of 3
In this 3rd video you can see how the pup behaved much better after getting a bump from the ram.
(See parts 1 and 2 for background details)
This particular Kangal had a strong prey drive also which is an undesirable trait for a livestock guardian dog. With a lot of work and attention she turned out pretty well in the end. But unfortunately it contributed to her eventual demise which I will talk about later.

Aggressive Livestock Guardian Pup - Video 2 of 3
See the first video of this 3 part series for more back ground on the dog and it's behavioral issues towards the livestock.
In the first video I mentioned that I got a shock collar to persuade her to not be aggressive towards the animals.
I spent a lot of time correcting her of bad behavior towards the sheep. I would give her a verbal warning and if she did not head it then she would get a zap which would immediately correct whatever negative thing she was doing. In the next phase of her training I would put her with the animals unattended or so she thought I would hide on the roof of the barn and as soon as she acted up toward them then she'd get the zap. It did not require very many corrections for her finally behave properly toward the livestock.
It would have been a much simpler task to have an already trained lives tock guardian dog to do the correcting but I had to start someplace.
These are some thing to keep in mind if you are thinking about getting a LGD for your livestock.

The Sound Of Spring!
It's maple syrup time! We love the sound of sap dripping into whatever kind of container we use whether it's a bag or a bucket, it means spring is finally here and we can sit around the fire cooking it down.
It takes approximately 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup.

Aggressive Kangal Pup - Video 1 of 3
With our first Kangal we began having behavioral issues with her. She was just 7 months old during the recording of this video. At an early age she was food aggressive whenever the livestock came anywhere near her while she was eating, then it progressed into having a strong dislike of the rams, in this video and the next one (part 2) she did not like it that the ram was drinking out of it's own water bucket. It took quite a bit of work to get her to stop this kind of behavior.
This is not a good trait in a livestock guardian dog. She had a strong temperament since a young pup which was great in warding off potential predators but not good in regards to living with livestock.
Being a first time LGD owner at this point it was a challenge to break her of this bad habit which was progressing. Although somewhat controversial I resorted to using a shock collar to dissuade her from attacking the animals and pulling wool from the sheep.
Often people with LGD's use an older experienced dog to correct the pups when they misbehave with the livestock. In our case I had to be the one to correct her since we didn't have any other dogs. In part 2, I will describe further of how I used the collar.

Kangal Puppy With Goat
This was my first ever livestock guardian dog. Part way into the video the pup starts attempting to play with the buck and in retrospect I realize that I should have probably corrected her from doing that. Later she went on to become aggressive towards our rams which was difficult to break her of the behavior.
