Snowmobiling March 25, 2024
We got very little snow during the 23/24 winter season and never got the sleds going when it did snow because my dad was ill most of the winter and we needed to be on call to help with him at a moments notice so just never got around to it.
Daughter got this short video of my wife and I taking a joy ride in the 8 inches of wet snow we got yesterday and today. We sure did need the moisture, this helps!
Still have a lot of availability at the log cabin for April, so if you've been thinking about staying this is a great time as we are running a special for the entire month. Book your stay today at https://www.vrbo.com/338940

Beautiful Spring Time Snow Storm in the Northwoods
Much needed moisture for us here at Log Cabin Homestead on March 24, 2024. It's been a dry spring so far, but this helps. Plus all the area snow plow guys should be able to make some extra money to help make their truck payments. We have been feeling sorry for all those folks because of the mild winter and the lack of plowing.
April is a great time to book the log cabin we have lots of openings and are running specials all month long. https://www.vrbo.com/338940

Mysterious Stain
Found out after cutting an oak log that it reacts to being in contact with metal. Maybe you experienced sawmill guys can tell me in the comment section what this discoloration is all about? It's a mystery to me, my guess is it's the tannic acid or something else in the oak that reacts with metal. It was a dark bluish purple color stained in the wood every place it touched the sawmill deck or up against the back stops. The back stops rusted over night from me leaving the log on the deck.

Beautiful Oak Beam
I made this nice oak beam from a tree that was too close to our log cabin. We've spent the last few years thinning trees around the cabin that we really should have taken out before we built it.
But we had moved here from the city back in 1998 and when we started constructing the cabin wanted to part with as few trees as possible because we love the trees, however was not the wisest thing to do looking at it in retrospect.
Very happy with the sawmill purchase, it is very satisfying turning logs into beautiful usable lumber.

Homesteading With Ducks
We've had great luck with ducks on our homestead. They breed like rabbits and give you meat and eggs.
Plus we live in northern Wisconsin where the winters are typically long and water fowl thrive here. While the chickens are hunkered down on the coldest days the ducks will be outside frolicking in the snow and taking snow baths.
Ducks are a great addition to any homestead.
About the only down side is they do tend to poop a lot, when we raise ducklings we keep them in a kiddy pool with plenty of wood shavings for the first few weeks for easier clean up.

Crash of the Titans-UFG (Ultimate Fighting Goats)
"Crash of the Titans"
Super Macho Man and Little Mack spar during some training sessions before the upcoming UFG (Ultimate Fighting Goats) welter weight division championship fight. ;)
We've had many animals given to us over the years by folks who can no longer keep them for whatever reason. Years ago these two little billy goats were picked up by our local dog catcher and the township contacted us to see if we wanted them. So we adopted them and they were a great source of entertainment for quite a few of our cabin guests.

A Northwoods Tradition
It’s been beautiful weather for making maple syrup. It takes approximately 40 gallons of sap cooked down to make 1 gallon of maple syrup. Some people ask ‘isn’t that a lot of work”? It is a lot of work if you count the cost in time and labor, but there many rewards that really can’t be calculated. For one thing it’s a tradition that goes back a long, long ways. I love the fact that as we are boiling sap there are countless other families in the region doing the exact same thing. Next, maple syrup season is the time when winter is losing its icy grip and the feeling of sitting outside around an open fire is hard to put in words after being bundled up in layers all winter! Then there is time spent in the woods putting in taps, hanging buckets or bags, collecting fire wood and collecting sap. So the cost vs. reward really can’t be measured in price. The delectable finished product is quite priceless especially when we sit down throughout the year to pancake breakfasts topped with pure homemade maple syrup that we produced with our own efforts. We made that! And we know ALL what it took to get it to that final stage! Truly priceless!

Basic Barn Door Latch
I built some sliding barn doors from pine wood that we milled for our hoop house/ poultry house and made this simple latch. I love simplicity and so far the latch has worked perfectly. We in and out of our poultry house several times a day and it's fun when something works out as planned.

How We Finish Maple Syrup
This is how we finish maple syrup. On the stove in the house. We make such small amounts at a time we get best results this way with more control than over the open fire. Though we have finished outside on the fire we like doing it in the house the best.

The Sound Of Spring
It's maple syrup time! We love the sound of sap dripping into whatever kind of container we use whether it's a bag or a bucket, it means spring is finally here and we can sit around the fire cooking it down.

Cooking Sap for Maple Syrup
This is how we make maple syrup at the Log Cabin Homestead. We don't make it for sale, we simply make enough for ourselves each year and some to give away as gifts.
This video is from 2015, but not much has changed we continue to boil sap exactly the same over and open fire year after year.

Winter at the Log Cabin Homestead
This would be a typical winter in the Northwoods, but not this year. This winter 2023/2024 was anything but typical. Very little snow so far as of 2-20-24, but we have had more than a few spring time snow storms.

Bottle Baby
A 5 day old male lamb we are bottle feeding because it's mother rejected him. He was a twin. Today I started bringing him into the house to feed, but we leave him with the flock in hopes that he might steal a drink once in a while from one of the mamma's. He is very black and hard to see on the video. We once had a black bottle fed male lamb that followed Kelli all over the place, we named him "Shadow" but we aren't sure if we will name this little guy or not. Lambs sure are cute!

2017 Dodge Ram 2500 Headlight Replacement
I had to replace the head light on my 2017 Dodge Ram today. I watched a tutorial on the youtube channel "big daddy's house" titled "Remove HEADLIGHTS DODGE RAM" which helped immensely in even knowing how to proceed. Otherwise I had no clue how to replace it. A big thanks to "big daddy's house"!
But I struggled a bit on actually taking the unit out once the bolts were removed and the plastic L lock was lifted up under the fender.
So I am just attempting here to add a couple bits of information to what he already showed.
~It requires removing 2 bolts (10 mm hex heads).
~The bolt down in the bottom requires a long extension to reach.
~Sliding L lock up from behind accessed from a trap door under the fender.
~Once the two bolts are removed and the L tab slid up push the whole unit forward gently from at the edge of the fender. And rotate the unit out in a clockwise motion (drivers side). (To push the unit forward I gently used a pry bar but it does not take much effort, the pry bar is way over kill. A firm tug by hand would probably accomplish the same results just to release the tab from where the L lock holds it. )
I do not do tutorial videos so the video is kind of a hack job holding the phone with one hand and attempting to describe what I did and what I found helpful in removing the unit in order to replace the bulb.
Hopefully an added perspective will help you out when you need to replace your headlight or marker light. I suggest you watch the other guys video first.

Progression of a maple tree losing it's leaves in the Fall
In the fall of 2023 I took a picture every day of this maple tree just before peak color until losing all its leaves, and decided to make a slide show out of it.
The tree stubbornly hung on to most of it's leaves until after day 16, we got rain and wind the night before and the next day there were dramatically less leaves.
The progression goes from 10-13-23 to 12-18-23.

My new Timbery bandsaw mill, first test run 2023
This is a used Timbery bandsaw mill that I got in the spring of 2023. This video shows one of my first test runs after setting it up in this temporary location. I am currently in the process of putting up a pole building to put it in. My plan is to cut all the wood for the building with this mill. A fun project!

Snowmobile "Tour" For Our Log Cabin Guests. vrbo.com/338940
This video shows many of the trails that our log cabin guests like to explore. We have miles of trails. The cabin is shown near the beginning with friendly folks happily waving.
vrbo.com/338940
By keeping the snow packed down in the winter via snowmobile, guests are able to more easily walk around on the trails and the wildlife use them as run ways taking advantage of the path of least resistance .
Some guests bring snow shoes and they can go just about anywhere on the 200 acres. The property has an amazing topography being mostly wooded with a mix of high ground and wet lands.
We get many snowmobilers staying at the log cabin that use the extensive public trail systems accessed a short distance from the homestead.
This video is admittedly a little too long, feel free to speed it up or skip ahead. If you stick around till the end something UNEXPECTED happens.
This winter (2022/2023) was the best snow I've ever ridden on in my life, we had almost 100 inches of snow total with several feet on the ground with four or five frozen layers. It did make for some bumpy trails, you can see of me bouncing about in the video. The video was taken with an "Insta 360 One X" which kind of distorts reality making for a different kind of video.
