Volleyball Blues
While Cyclone football has had their week off, volleyball has had an incredibly busy slate that has taken its toll on the team. The team has seen small victories in wins over Montana State and Colgate, as well as Morgan Brandt passing the 2000 career assist mark and Christy Johnson-Lynch surpassing 375 career wins.
Those small victories have gotten washed out though by difficult losses at the South Dakota Classic, struggles with offensive consistency, Nayeli Gonzalez missing 2 games, and bizarre streaming services that required an additional paywall to watch the games in that tournament. It's a lot to clean up in one final tune up tomorrow before advancing to conference play.
Meanwhile, it's not like football has been up to nothing. After properly celebrating the Cy-Hawk win, the team has had time to refocus, make sure there's no hangover, and be prepared to deal with an Arkansas State team that got battered and bruised by Michigan.

Cyclone State!
The Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series is off to a hot start for the cardinal and gold donning school from Ames. It began Saturday with a dramatic come from behind victory led by a stellar second half performance from Rocco Becht, Jayden Higgins, Jaylin Noel, Darien Porter, and the freshman kicker who stole the show with seconds remaining on the scoreboard, Kyle Konrardy.
The Cyclones didn't stop there though. Rather, it was only the beginning of a year that has high potential for Iowa State athletics to dominate their foes on I-80. Volleyball answered the call on Wednesday en route to a 3-1 win that was more dominant than a 4 set game typically is, and they set the score of the Cy-Hawk series to 5-0 Clones.

Sound The Cy-Hawk Sirens
Tomorrow marks the biggest day on the calendar for the state of Iowa as tensions will run high, many beers will be consumed, meat will be smoked, and one school will hoist the Cy-Hawk trophy on their shoulders as they walk out of Kinnick Stadium? Will Iowa State effectively be able to gash the team out east's defense with Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel? Or will the lack of Caleb Bacon result in the team out east defeating us with the run?
Iowa State volleyball got out to a slow start to the season at the UNLV invite against Pacific and the host school UNLV, but after game one of the Cyclone Invite our ladies appear to have bounced back and are ready to contend against Wake Forest tonight and Illinois tomorrow, not to mention against the team out east on Wednesday of next week, all in games at Hilton Coliseum.

Big 12 Preview
College sports have returned for the remainder of the 2024 calendar year, and that means that the Cyclones are ready to hit the gridiron at Jack Trice Stadium and the court at Hilton Coliseum.
That means it's time for the return of Matt and Blake, who will guide you through the Big 12 conference football win totals, a game by game breakdown of Iowa State's schedule, and a prediction of who will win every power conference championship, who will fill out the CFP bracket, and who will win all the glory.
The absence of Texas from the Big 12 leaves a void in the volleyball world for anyone to step in and claim the title of top dog, and the number of schools with a reasonable shot at getting it is very high. The boys have game by game predictions for Iowa State's entire volleyball schedule ready to prepare you for the upcoming season

Chaos is Coming
We don't exactly compare the Minnesota Twins and the St Louis Cardinals all that often, but one thing that can be said about both teams is that they are incredibly streaky, each having runs recently where they were really hot and each team also having a seven game losing streak mixed in.
The Western Conference Finals look like they're going to be every bit as entertaining as the semifinals ended up being, with dynamic combinations of matchups competing against each other as Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and the Mavericks try to knock off Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert, and Karl-Anthony Towns for a spot in the NBA Finals
The path has been paved for college sports to change forever as the NCAA and the power conferences have agreed to a $2.7 billion settlement in House v NCAA, meaning that pay for play will now be a part of college sports. Amateurism is dead, cast by the wayside, and the new path forward has a lot of brand new questions that need to be answered as we head to uncharted territory.

On To Game 7
The series between the Timberwolves and the Nuggets went from potential beat down to one of the most unpredictable and exciting events we've seen in the NBA this season, as the Nuggets put up 3 consecutive wins and the Timberwolves put up one of the most dominant games in the history of the NBA playoffs.
The Twins went from being one of the hottest teams in baseball to going ice cold after only scoring one run in their series against the New York Yankees and disastrously giving up a six run lead to the Toronto Blue Jays in the last week as they slipped back to third place in the AL Central. Speaking of the AL Central, the White Sox seem to be heating up as we progress into the season.
The NFL has released the full schedule for the 2024 season, complete with new schedule release videos by each team to entertain us for the time being. More importantly, now we can circle individual matchups for the various weeks of the NFL season.

Home Run Sausage
The Minnesota Twins are officially the hottest team in the MLB whilst playing what is arguably the most stacked division in baseball, something that nobody expected. Their good luck charm is a bit unusual, and perhaps a bit unsanitary, according to manager Rocco Baldelli.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have accomplished the first playoff sweep in franchise history, and in the process they proved that Ant-Man is definitely a better basketball player than Kevin Durant. This team is dominant, and may be the perfect style to win in an upset against the Nuggets in the conference semifinals.
Iowa State unveiled new football uniforms to mixed opinions from the fanbase, and of course we're ready to give our opinions, and deal with the unfortunate pain of giving the team out east credit where it's due.
This was producer Vinnie's final episode with CSP. We're gonna miss him around the studio.

NBA's New Era
For the first time in forever, we have an NBA second round without the likes of Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, or Lebron James. Instead we usher in a new generation of stars, led by MVP Nikola Jokic and the offensive face of the Timberwolves, Anthony Edwards.
ESPN released their way too early rankings for men's and women's college basketball, and naturally that means we have to start drawing conclusions about where teams are going to end up, right? Who could surprise, who could disappoint, and how Iowa State might fit in the rankings on both sides of the ball are all things that need to be discussed.
The Twins are still the hottest team in baseball after winning 15 of their last 17 games, and the Cardinals are now the coldest team in baseball after losing 5 games in a row, and the Cubs and Brewers can't seem to decide who's going to take the top spot in the NL Central

Draft Wisely
The NFL Draft begun last night and made the usual headlines regarding who was drafted first, which quarterbacks went in which order, where the top wide receiver went, among others. Additionally, it also was among the most heavily offensive first rounds on record, tying the most ever offensive players in the first round and the fastest the top five quarterbacks have ever been taken.
The NBA playoffs are humming along through the first round, and the Bucks-Pacers series is anyone's guess who's to win with how hot and cold the Bucks can be on a game by game basis. Meanwhile in the Western Conference, the Timberwolves are up two games to zero on the Suns and their defense looks like they'll suffocate their way into the second round.
The White Sox are on pace for what very well may be one of the worst seasons in MLB history, still having only 3 wins to their name due to the lack of firepower in their batting lineup and missing depth from the mound. They're missing options to turn their season around, and they don't have enough assets to be a selling team later in the season.

Will The Real Title IX Please Stand Up?
Once again, the actions of politicians and bureaucrats have impacted the world of collegiate athletics. Naturally, we have to address the topic and explain what we think is going to happen next, not only to women's sports, but to men's sports as well.
The NBA Play In Tournament is ongoing, and the Chicago Bulls won the first game that they needed to in order to make it to the playoffs. In the process, Coby White dropped a career high scoring total and the Atlanta Hawks were torched.
Our NHL season coverage has come to a close, as none of the local teams were able to make it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. If nothing else, it means that the Blackhawks are on the same footing as the Wild and the Blues for the first time since opening night.
Whatever the Twins are doing at the plate right now, they need to just do the opposite of, because if it can go bad, it is. They can't hit to save their lives, and if the offense doesn't turn around quickly, they're in for a long season in the much improved AL Central

Cyclone Hoops Ends, MLB Begins
The season is over for both Iowa State men's and women's basketball after losses in the Sweet Sixteen and the round of 32 respectively. The feeling around each of these losses is very different, with the men not meeting expectations and the women exceeding them. We talk about what went wrong at TD Garden in the game against Illinois.
Yesterday was opening day for Major League Baseball, and for most of the teams we cover it was a rough day as 4 of the 6 took losses, and one took a rain delay, leaving the Twins as the lone local team to claim a win on opening day. This win was soured by potential injuries to Royce Lewis and Max Kepler. Their status remains to be seen.
We are only a few weeks away from the NBA and NHL playoffs beginning, and powerhouses like the Timberwolves and Bucks are jockeying for standing with the Bulls holding on to a play in spot. The NHL is a bit rougher among local teams with the Blues likely to make it and the Wild having to fight their way in. And the Blackhawks...are the Blackhawks.

Iowa State Men's Basketball: Bobby Witt's team?
The Cyclones dispatched South Dakota State last night by a 17 point margin of victory, advancing to the second round where they will face the Washington State cougars. This may be an optimal matchup for the Cyclones stylistically, and we explain why.
The Cyclone women begin their tournament run tonight in a game against Maryland at Stanford's home gym. Expect a lot of offense, defense that is average at best, and plenty of looks down low to Audi Crooks, because Maryland doesn't seem to have an answer for her.
The Timberwolves are slipping in the seeding of the Western Conference in the NBA and the Chicago Blackhawks are still really bad, but is anyone really paying attention to that during March Madness?
The MLB begins regular season play this coming Thursday, and we analyze the local teams first matchups, who's going to be on the hill for each of our teams on opening day, Byron Buxton and Royce Lewis being healthy, and Bobby Witt knowing ball.

BONUS EPISODE: March Madness
Tournament time is upon us. We have completed the various conference tournaments, with plenty of things to talk about for Iowa State. In women's basketball we're Big 12 runners-up and in men's basketball and wrestling we have reclaimed our spots as champions. The Big 12 runs through Ames.
We analyze the positions of both the men's and women's teams in their respective brackets, the hard points and the potential paths. And of course, we have to enter the seeding debate in the men's side, and detail how and why Iowa State got snubbed of a 1 seed and what should be done to prevent this from happening to teams in the future.
The boys also give a deep dive into the men's bracket, breaking down who the Cinderella teams will be, who will fall flat, who has the talent to run deep, and who, ultimately, will be the 2024 NCAA men's basketball national champions.

Undefeated at Hilton
Our Iowa State Cyclones have accomplished a feat not done for a generation - men's basketball completed their home games this season without losing any of them. The atmosphere for this feat was incredible, and Matt's gotta tell you about just how insanely loud it got in that building on Wednesday
Wrestling is entering its most intense part of the season as the Big 12 tournament begins tomorrow at the BOK Center in Tulsa. Iowa State has a large selection of #1 and #2 seeded wrestlers and should be in good position to be competing with Oklahoma State and Mizzou for their first Big 12 title since 2009
The NHL trade deadline has arrived and the Wild went wild while the Blues went mild, leaving the Blackhawks somewhere in between. And we ponder the question, do the Blackhawks have a long term strategy right now that involves further short term sacrifice? They may be dangerous in a few short years.

Give Us Baseball
Today, another college baseball season begins, and another season begins without the Iowa State Cyclones competing for a division I title, but for the first time on opening day, at least we have an alternative option. We have Iowa State softball, and particularly Lea Nelson to thank for that.
Chiefs Kingdom reigns for the next year, as Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, and Clark Hunt hoisted the Lombardi trophy for the 2nd consecutive year. Earning the title was no easy feat, and Matt and Blake discuss the merits of the 49ers offense and why that means the Chiefs defensive efforts were so impressive.
As the Celtics continue to dominate the NBA, the number of teams that threaten to be able to claim the O'Brien trophy over them dwindles. Week in and week out, the Bucks look like less of a competitor and the Timberwolves look like the best team in the west to take them down.
The Kansas City Royals are the second of the teams we cover to have unveiled renderings of a new ballpark to be built, and it looks absolutely amazing.

Super Bowl Preview
In less than 2 days the Lombardi trophy will be handed off to the victor of Super Bowl 58, but who will win? Surprisingly, our band of hosts are all in agreement on how the game will end, and just as importantly, how the game needs to be broadcast by CBS.
Iowa State men's basketball lost in a heartbreaker that should not have been a heartbreaker in Waco while playing the Baylor Bears, and a few days later the team pays a visit to Austin to visit former Cyclone Tyrese Hunter and give the Texas Longhorns their first loss in Austin to the Cyclones since 2015
What exactly happened to the Milwaukee Bucks? Ever since Adrian Griffin was removed from the head coaching position, it's been a slew of losses for the men clad in green, and now they have lost their grip on the Central division and are sliding down the order of the Eastern Conference.

Hardwood Havoc for Kansas and Oklahoma State

The Super Bowl is set, the two teams that made it are the two teams that deserve to have made it, our thoughts on how the rosters compare, the differences between the skill players of Kansas City and San Francisco. More to come on that in a future episode.
The NBA approaches its trade deadline, and the Bulls are walking in murky waters with limited options jumping out at them but a lot of things being desired by the franchise. The Bucks and Timberwolves on the other hand, are limited by salary cap and likely won't be trading too much.
The MLB had its hottest week of offseason activity yet, and we have news for all six of the teams we cover for the first time since the MLB regular season ended.

Controversy With The Cats
K-State coach Jerome Tang sure seemed mad about something during Wednesday night's game in Hilton Coliseum, but is there really anything besides awful officiating that he should have been mad at? Accusations ran rampant, the rumor mill on twitter is full of nonsense, and Sports Illustrated and CBS have both ran stories that have debatable veracity about why Tang was so heated.
The Milwaukee Bucks fired head coach Adrian Griffin, presumably as a result of the distinct lack of defense that the Bucks have been able to play this year. Their offense has been able to cover the gap so far, but will the risk end up paying off?
Matt's childhood baseball hero has been voted into Cooperstown on his first Hall of Fame ballot, and of course he's incredibly excited to see Joe Mauer earn such a valuable honor after a career played entirely for Joe's hometown Minnesota Twins.

Houston, We Are Your Problem
Upset week has arrived in college basketball, and there's a lot of chaos to break down both in men's and women's ball as the competitive parity of the Big 12 makes itself increasingly apparent.
Don't forget about the players that don't necessarily fill up the stat sheet with mind blowing numbers. Robert Jones against Houston and Kelsey Joens against West Virginia played key roles in pivotal moments that let to Cyclone Victories this week.
The NFL Wild Card has arrived, and there are some opinions to be had about how one game in particular is being made public in comparison to all of the other games not only this year, but through recent history as well.
Major League Baseball finally saw some more action in the offseason as the rosters begin to take shape. Time continues to dwindle before spring training begins and there are still plenty of free agents to sign and trades to make.

New Year, Same Bowl Assignment As 5 Years Ago
Matt's less than happy about the result of the Liberty Bowl game after the loss to Memphis, which is to be expected. He's also significantly less happy about the way the bowl game was ran, with Iowa State being treated as a true road team as opposed to the neutral site that a bowl game is supposed to be.
Cyclone basketball begins its grueling conference slate, with the men preparing for their first game in Big 12 play and the women off to a 2-0 start with wins against Oklahoma State and Kansas
The NFL is entering week 18. Do or die for some teams, like the Vikings, and a glorified bye for others, like the Chiefs, whose spot in the playoffs is already sealed.

Kansas City Regresses Into Mediocrity
Matt has a message for his fellow Kansas City Chiefs fans. Two things can be true at once. Yes, 9 times out of 10 players will not be called offsides for being lined up in the same place that Kadarius Toney was. It was still the correct call. It was selective enforcement. If you're going to complain, at least make the right complaint.
The Wild have been wild, as their program appears to have completely turned around since they underwent their coaching change, gaining ground in the Central division.

Hilton Massacre
December 7, roughly 8:30 PM. Iowa State has obliterated the team out east in the Cy-Hawk men's basketball game, so much so that ESPN's announcer says that Hilton Magic gave way to the Hilton Massacre. That is what the 600th win in Hilton Coliseum shall be known as for all time.
Don't forget that earlier in the day ISU alum Tyrese Haliburton led the Indiana Pacers to a NBA In Season Tournament semifinal win over the Bucks, and dropped a dagger 3 in the final minute to seal it
And a topic that we've mentioned a few times before on the show, where oh where will the future lie for the Arizona Coyotes, because it definitely does not look like it will be in Arizona. Salt Lake City, Houston, Kansas City, and Atlanta seem to be the prime contenders.
