2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI First Look Review: The Automatic Choice
The starting price for the 2025 VW Golf GTI hasn't been shared for the local market yet. The base GTI with the dual-clutch starts at $31,965 currently, so the 2025 model will probably start at an MSRP of about $33k. The best-equipped trim will cost closer to $42k.
The GTI's price and performance place it below the likes of the Honda Civic Type R and Toyota GR Corolla, but you can pick up a base GR Corolla for not much more and that has 300 hp. The Subaru WRX isn't a hatchback but can also be considered one of the GTI's rivals, as it offers 271 hp and a similar base price.New Volkswagen Golf GTI Exterior And Colors
Immediately recognizable as a Golf, that's always been the first mission for VW's iconic nameplate. The exterior of the latest VW Golf GTI isn't without changes, though. There is a modified front fascia with restyled LED headlights and available IQ.Light LED matrix headlights with an extended range of up to 1,640 feet. The GTI is set apart by a red stripe in the upper grille above the headlights.
A new wheel design measuring 19 inches is mildly reminiscent of the telephone-dial wheels on some Alfa Romeos, and these have a darker center section to contrast with the outer silver finish. Another change is the addition of the GTI badging on the front doors beneath the rearview mirrors.
At the back, there are chrome-plated tailpipes on either side of the black diffuser. Above this are newly styled IQ-Light 3D LED taillight clusters. This applies to European models, though, so we'll have to see if US-spec GTIs have the same lighting technology.
Colors for the Volkswagen Golf GTI include four new options: Crystal Ice Blue Metallic, Anemone Blue Metallic, Oyster Silver Metallic, and Grenadilla Black Metallic. We can expect red to stick around, and we'll see if all these shades are added for the US-bound GTI. A new option for the GTI will be a black-painted roof.Volkswagen Golf GTI Dimensions
Volkswagen hasn't published the dimensions for the facelifted Golf GTI, but these should be in line with the length/width/height of the 2024 version, which worked out to 168.8/70.4/57.9 inches, respectively. The 2024 Golf GTI with the DSG is marginally lower to the ground at 57.6 inches. No changes are anticipated for the 103.6-inch wheelbase.
With the DSG, now the only transmission, the 2024 GTI had a curb weight of 3,188 pounds, and we don't expect specs for the 2025 hatch to be too different.Volkswagen Golf GTI Engine And Performance
The mechanical makeup of the GTI has been much the same for years now, with a four-cylinder engine matched to a well-sorted front-wheel-drive layout. The engine in the pre-facelift VW Golf GTI is a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit with 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. In Europe, the GTI will get a boost to 262 hp, but it's unknown if US-spec models will receive the same power bump.
Assuming power stays the same, we know that the GTI with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission can go from 0-60 mph in around 5.5 seconds.
The 2025 Golf GTI should once again combine sharp handling with a comfortable ride, so it can be used for weekend blasts and carting the family around equally well. New driver-assist technologies include a four-camera 360-degree view system, plus Park Assist Pro. The latter enables the owner to drive the Golf into and out of a parking space using a smartphone.Estimated Gas Mileage
Gas mileage estimates for the facelifted Golf GTI should match the pre-facelift model's 24/33/27 mpg city/highway/combined. That's with the dual-clutch automatic and that matches the combined rating of the GTI manual, which won't be offered for 2025.
With a 13.2-gallon gas tank, the Golf GTI should be good for a range of around 356 miles.Volkswagen Golf GTI Interior And Cargo
The interior of the new VW Golf GTI hatchback is where the most meaningful changes have been implemented. Many customers derided the fussy controls of the outgoing GTI and VW has responded with new hardware and software for the infotainment interface.
Instead of touch-capacitive buttons on the older steering wheel that were easy to activate accidentally, the facelifted model has a revised steering wheel with more traditional buttons that require a dedicated press. The fourth-generation MIB4 modular infotainment system has new graphics and a better menu structure. The screen has two touch bars (at the top and bottom) and a home screen in the middle, with the top and bottom bars continuously displayed even as various apps are opened and closed on the middle home screen. The bottom bar is reserved for the ventilation system. The larger touchscreen expected to be standard in local GTIs measures 12.9 inches, and the touch sliders for temperature and volume control below it are now illuminated and more ergonomically designed. Complementing the center touchscreen is a 10.2-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrumentation display with different layouts.
The 2024 GTI in the USA already has standard equipment like single-zone automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and multi-color ambient lighting, so we can expect all of this to carry over. The seats in the Volkswagen Golf GTI will have a classic check pattern, although the ones pictured here have a two-tone black/grey color scheme with red stitching and the red GTI insignia on the backrests. VW says three-zone climate control is standard, and optional carbon fiber interior trim is available, but this has only been confirmed for European models so far.
Cargo space inside the VW Golf GTI will likely match the 2024 model's 19.1 cubic feet behind the second row and 34.5 cu-ft with the rear seats folded.

2025 Chevrolet Equinox First Look Review: More Of Everything You Need
2025 Chevrolet Equinox Estimated Price and Competition
Pricing hasn't been revealed yet, but given the improvements, we can estimate a price for the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox lineup. The current range starts at an MSRP of just over $26k, but the base LS trim isn't carrying over for 2025. The entry-level model for 2025 is the LT, which costs $29,495 with FWD for 2024. Given the improvements and additional equipment, we expect the price of the new Chevrolet Equinox to be upwards of $32k, with at least $1,600 added for equipping AWD. Currently, the top model in the lineup is priced from $31,800, so it's safe to assume the new Activ trim will cost closer to $35k.
Rivals are similarly priced, with the Honda CR-V starting at $29,500 and topping out at nearly $35k for the most plush gas model. The capable Mazda CX-50 goes on sale for $30,300 in base configuration, but the fully loaded top model will set you back nearly $45k.Chevrolet Equinox Dimensions
The dimensions of the 2025 Chevy Equinox show that it's wider, longer, and slightly taller than the outgoing model. Stretched over a 107.5-inch wheelbase, the Equinox has a length of 183.2 inches, a width of 74.9 inches, and a height of 75.6 inches. Curb weight starts at 3,428 pounds for the base model and will likely increase a little on the more well-equipped models, as well as those equipped with AWD.New Chevrolet Equinox Exterior and Colors
The entire look of the 2025 Equinox is fresh and appealing, and it looks more assertive than ever. With three models in the lineup, each also gets unique exterior bits and pieces to set the trim levels apart. Taking its cues from the Chevy truck lineup and the 2024 Traverse, the new Chevy Equinox crossover has strong body lines and squarer wheel arches. These are filled with 17-inch wheels on the base model and Activ, and 19-inch alloys on the RS - a range of 19- and 20-inch items are available across the range.
The first-ever Activ model is aimed at those who lead a more adventurous lifestyle, and it's designed to reflect that. It gets a unique front fascia with off-road styling cues, all-terrain tires, and an available white roof. The RS remains the more menacing Equinox, so it comes with black emblems and mirrors, a blacked-out front end, and Carbon Flash wheels. A black roof is also available. As the entry-spec model, the LT will be available with the standard chrome exterior accents or with the Midnight Edition package that adds high gloss black finishes to the exterior.
All Chevrolet Equinox models get LED exterior lighting - with thin, expressive headlights underscored by DRLs and indicator clusters - distinctive wraparound taillights, and a C-pillar shark fin that resembles the look of the Traverse. Exterior colors for the Chevy Equinox haven't been confirmed yet.Chevrolet Equinox Engine and Performance
The new Chevrolet Equinox crossover gets a refreshed version of the same engine that's done duty in the past: a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four that's mated to a CVT in front-wheel-drive configurations or a new eight-speed automatic when all-wheel drive is optioned on. It makes the same outputs, so specs remain at 175 hp, but torque figures vary from 184 lb-ft in the FWD models to 203 lb-ft in AWD versions. No 0-60 or top speed figures have been suggested, but past AWD models have managed the benchmark sprint in around eight seconds. Towing capacity is 800 lbs for models with the front wheels driven, and a maximum of 1,500 lbs for those using all four.
The RS and Activ trims come with driver-selectable models that are accessed via a rotator on the center console. Drivers can choose from Normal or Snow on FWD models, and those with AWD get Off-Road mode additionally.Chevrolet Equinox Interior and Cargo
Like the substantial exterior changes, the 2025 Chevy Equinox gets substantial interior updates, too. There are larger screens, more standard content, and the dashboard has been pulled away to create the impression of more space. We're appreciative of the sleek look, which incorporates an all-new 11-inch configurable driver information cluster and an 11.3-inch infotainment screen. A six-speaker sound system is standard on the base model, and wireless charging is available.
Although the base Chevy Equinox for 2025 will likely come standard with cloth seats, the manufacturer says that an upgrade to Evotex upholstery is available from the outset. The RS gets Evotex as standard, with unique Torch Red and Santorini Blue stitching, debossed RS logos, and a flat-bottom heated steering wheel.
The new Activ trim gets a bespoke Maple Sugar and Black interior with premium Evotex and sueded microfiber. At this level, the front seats and steering wheel are heated, and buyers can add ventilation to the front perches, and heating to the rear.
Safety plays a huge part in the updated Chevy Equinox lineup, with more standard features for the new model year, including the fleshed-out Chevy Safety Assist, Teen Driver, and automatic emergency braking being standard on all models. Additional safety features include side bicyclist alert, lane change alert with side blind zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, and more.
As far as cargo space in the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox goes, there is 29.8 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seats, which fold flat to open up 63.5 cubes. There's also a useful under-floor storage space inside the cargo bay on the new Equinox.Estimated Gas Mileage
No fuel efficiency claims have been made for the new Chevy Equinox, but given the engine used is the same as the outgoing model, it's likely the gas mileage figures will stay the same. Current FWD models score EPA ratings of 26/31/28 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles, while AWD trims get 24/30/26 mpg.
The difference in fuel tank capacity between FWD and AWD models is less than a full gallon; the former has a 14.8-gallon tank, while the latter can hold 15.6 gallons. Range should be somewhere between 400 and 420 miles, depending on whether the updates to the powertrain have enhanced efficiency or not.

Hennessey's Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 Will Push Up To 1,700 Horsepower
Launched in 2019, the 992-generation Porsche 911 range offers a wide array of options with the convertible, coupe, Turbo, GTS and, of course the track-focused GT3 and GT3 RS. Porsche has been testing the revised 911 (we expect it’ll be given the 992.2 designation) for a while and our latest spy shots suggest a full reveal is imminent. While we’ve seen the front on the facelifted 911 virtually undisguised on some other variants, the Turbo still retains a bit of camouflage. As with the current 911 Turbo, it’ll feature some bespoke design tweaks compared to the standard car.
It looks like the front air intakes will be taller than on the outgoing Turbo, causing a reshuffle of the front indicator lights. The horizontal slats within the grilles aren’t as pronounced as the standard car’s, either.
As for the side and rear, we can see what looks like a new design of the centre lock wheels in front of a set of massive brake discs - which on the current Turbo S are carbon ceramic as standard. The rear retains the distinctive full-width rear light, along with the Turbo’s low-level rear spoiler. The bumper still has some camouflage over it but the traditional set of quad-tip exhausts remain. We’ve also seen the standard 911 testing, revealing a revised bumper with vertical strakes in the air intakes. To the rear that large wing looks identical to the ‘SportDesign’ package you can get on the standard 911 and beneath we can see the new exhaust tip layout and bumper design. We’re also expecting some different alloy wheel designs and paint options.
Porsche has been spotted testing the GT3 and GT3 Touring models too. Those designs will ape the standard car’s, with new LED daytime running lights. The GT3 models get a bespoke front and rear bumper and, while it looks unchanged at the front, the rear has some camouflage on it in our pictures, so expect some slight alterations there. The twin-exit central exhaust remains and on the GT3 the swan-neck spoiler looks the same. The GT3 RS was only launched in 2022 so expect the full reveal of the hottest model to arrive later.Porsche 911 facelift: engines and performance
A new air intake and exhaust system could allow for more power. During the previous generation’s facelift (from 991 to 911.2), Porsche increased the Carrera S’ output from 395bhp to 420bhp and the GTS also received a 20bhp bump. A similar uplift could happen across the standard 911 model range for the updated 992 generation.A 911 Hybrid has been testing since 2021 and while details remain slim, we expect it to launch soon after the 911’s facelift. Back in 2020, the then research and development boss for Porshce, Dr Michael Steiner, told Auto Express: “The platform is hybrid ready, and we have prototypes. I drive it myself; it's fun to drive.”

Tuners Take 2023 Nissan Z To The Next Level With Wide Body Kit And Deep Dish WheelsDark, sinister, stealth, but quite conspicuous, this Liberty Walk 2023 Nissan Z widebody could be someone’s late Christmas present. On their YouTube channel, Throtl, the popular tuners took a brand new 2023 Nissan Z and transformed it into a widebody stealth fighter for the road. But it was a lot more work than just bolting on an aftermarket body kit and calling it a day. The team were on a quest to build a Liberty Walk 2023 Nissan Z, so the upgrades are quite evidently extensive, albeit predominantly cosmetic. But upgrades underneath the skin were certainly required to match the exuberant widebody look. With some NISMO parts, the Japanese sports car now breathes better and rides lower courtesy of a new intake, exhaust and suspension systems. But before they begin building the first and only Nissan Z with a Liberty Walk widebody kit in the U.S., the team at Throtl must reveal its true colors. The team begin the project with a Z that has already been altered from its factory form. The hood was from aftermarket with air vents. The stock wheels were replaced with the five-spoke chrome kind. Lastly, the body was wrapped in purple chrome. So before the build could start, the Z had to be thoroughly cleaned, and the wrap peeled off to reveal the original paint of the car.
The original color on the Nissan was the factory black diamond pearl color option. It would also be the final color the team would eventually use for the build. Strangely, the team decided to fit off-road tires to the Z and see what it's like to drive on dirt. Attempting a few donuts and light roughroading, it was clear that the Z was quite capable off the beaten path. Back to the workshop, the Throtl team begin stripping the car down to ready it for the upgrades. From the factory, the latest generation Nissan Z is available in three solid exterior color options. They include Rosewood Metallic, Gun Metallic and Black Diamond Pearl. But six other choice of colors are available; Everest White TriCoat, Brilliant Silver Metallic, Boulder Gray Pearl, Seiran Blue TriCoat, Passion Red TriCoat and Ikazuchi Yellow TriCoat all come with black painted roofs. However, the NISMO Z, on the other hand, has a more limited palette of five color choices, which are solid Black Diamond Pearl, or the split-tone Passion Red TriCoat, Everest White TriCoat, Brilliant Silver Metallic and a new bespoke color of Stealth Gray.In the video, the team replace the stock seats with more supportive sporty seats. We can see the stock rails could not accommodate the new seats, so the team had to fabricate and modify them to fit. Then the stock exhaust on the new Z was removed. Throtl has now equipped the sports car with a new Magnaflow xMod series performance exhaust system with extreme delete pipes which would unlock some performance and sound better.Next, a package arrives with the Liberty Walk body kit, some instructions, and a book with the label "SEMA Second Kit" confirming it is the second in the world and first in the U.S. The team unboxed the body kit and compared the modified bumpers to the original to find out how substantially aggressive to stock.2023 Nissan Z Engine Specs

Infiniti Q50Fast Facts About The Liberty Walk Nissan Z
It is the first Liberty Walk Nissan Z in the U.S.
This is the second Nissan Z body kit made in the world.
The exhaust was upgraded with a Magnaflow xMod system.
After masking up the front fenders and rear quarter panels, the team line up the wider wheel arches and drilling the holes to install the new parts. The Liberty Walk body kit now makes the car wider by a massive 80 mm (3.1 inches). The next piece is the three-piece rear ducktail spoiler that is aligned and bolted to the trunk lid. They then overlay a more aggressive rear diffuse to the factory bumper. It was then time to align and fit the accentuated front bumper and completely transform the Z. The old bumper and previous hood were both replaced to match the kit, and the front fenders were aligned to complete the look.

Subaru WRX S4 STI Sport Is A Japanese Special Only Available Through A Lottery System
The special model is capped at just 500 units and has the standard 2.4-liter turbo-four with 271 hp and 277 lb-ftSome people love the latest-generation Subaru WRX while others hate it and the curious crossover-inspired design but the carmaker hasn’t let that stop it from announcing a new limited-run variant for the Japanese market. The new model, dubbed the WRX S4 STI Sport will be capped at just 500 units and available via a lottery system running from January 12-28.
A seemingly endless number of special edition Impreza, WRX, and WRX STI models have been launched over the years and like so many others, the WRX S4 STI Sport benefits from a handful of new parts but is not dramatically different than the regular version on which it is based. We doubt this fact, nor the 6,237,000 yen ($43,000) asking price, will limit the appeal of the car.
Perhaps the most significant upgrade is the fitment of 19-inch BBS forged wheels with a Super Black finish and clad in Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires. Complementing these sleek new wheels is a revised black front grille, blacked-out badges, and a black lip spoiler on the decklid. Subaru has also painted the wing mirrors and roof antenna in Crystal Black Silica.
Joining the new wheels and tires on the performance front is a tower bar under the hood and a stiffening bar at the rear.
Read: 2024 Subaru WRX Base Price Hiked By $2,200, TR Starts At $42,775
Each of the 500 examples also has a customized interior. Key changes made include the fitment of a genuine leather-wrapped steering wheel with silver stitching, shift boots with silver stitching, and new Recaro seats up front clad in an ultra suede material and also rocking the same contrast stitching. This same suede material extends across part of the instrument panel, armrests, and center console.
Power comes from the standard 2.4-liter horizontally-opposed turbocharged four-cylinder coupled to a continuously variable transmission. This engine produces 271 hp and 277 lb-ft (375 Nm) of torque.Subaru WRX S4 STI Sport Is A Japanese Special Only Available Through A Lottery System

Polestar 3 prototype review: the most important new Swedish SUV since the last one
With a handsome design and the requisite high-riding seating position, the 2024 Polestar 3 joins the flood of electrified SUVs pouring into the market. Volvo’s spinoff-EV brand has produced only cars to date—though the Polestar 2 could be seen as either a tall car or a low-riding SUV. There will be no such confusion concerning the 3, which will go on sale sometime in the second half of 2024. We’ll admit to being smitten with its streamlined roofline, prominent fenders, and dramatic wheel arches. The SUV’s cabin looks rich too, with a clean design and high-end materials. Power is more than ample in the base model, which is propelled by a 489-hp, dual-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain. For speed freaks, the optional Performance trim boosts it to 517 horsepower and adds unique 22-inch wheels, summer tires, and a tweaked suspension system. The driving range is a decent 300 miles per charge for the standard model and 270 miles for the Performance, and both can be charged quickly via a DC fast charging connection. It’s also equipped with an array of active safety features, and Polestar has future enhancements planned that include Volvo's lidar technology, which will supposedly enable full self-driving sometime in the future. The company is also planning a second SUV called Polestar 4, which will be a fastback-bodied version of the 3.Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe
The EPA hasn’t released fuel efficiency estimates for the Polestar 3 yet, but we expect it to be slightly less efficient than the Polestar 2 sedan. When we get a chance, we’ll take the Polestar 3 on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route and update this story with its test results. For more information about the Polestar 3’s fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Polestar has decked out its first SUV model with plenty of convenience and luxury features. All models come with a panoramic sunroof that bears an illuminated Polestar logo. A power rear liftgate is standard too, as are power front seats with heat, a three-zone automatic climate control system, and an onboard air purifier. The interior design is clean and modern, and it features high-end materials that Polestar says are also eco-friendly and sustainable. At launch, all models will come with the Plus package, which includes niceties such as a power-adjustable steering wheel with heat and soft-close doors. Cargo space is less generous than in some other similarly-sized SUVs and the Polestar 3's front trunk (or frunk) is a disappointing one cubic foot cubby that's good only for storing the SUV's portable charging cables.EV Motor, Power, and Performance
A dual-motor powertrain is standard on the Polestar 3, but it’s offered in two strengths. The base setup makes 489 horsepower but the Performance trim gets bumped to 517 ponies. Polestar has said that the powertrain is rear-biased even though all-wheel drive is standard. With the more robust electric motors on board, Polestar says the 3 will sprint to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. We had the chance to drive prototypes of both versions at Volvo and Polestar's proving grounds in Sweden and are happy to report both deliver snappy acceleration. Every 3 will come with an adaptive suspension system with active dampers and air springs, but the Performance package includes a sport-tuned version of the suspension. Handling is surprisingly agile. A torque-vectoring rear differential helps curb understeer and gives the Polestar 3 a more planted feel through fast cornering maneuvers. When we get a chance, we’ll take the new Polestar 3 to our test track and update this story with test results and more driving impressions.Range, Charging, and Battery Life
All models come with the same 107-kWh battery pack that can charge at up to 250 kW on a DC fast charging connection. Polestar says that is enough to get the battery charged from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 30 minutes. Once charged up to full, the standard model is said to deliver about 300 miles of driving before needing to be re-juiced; the more powerful Performance model’s estimated range is slightly lower at 270 miles per charge.Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Polestar’s limited warranty sticks to the industry standard, on par with that of Tesla. The company also provides competitive coverage for the 3's electrical components. Surprisingly, Polestar doesn’t offer the same three-year complimentary maintenance program as Volvo, its parent company.Infotainment and Connectivity
A large 14.5-inch infotainment display is standard and runs Polestar’s latest Google-based infotainment interface. A secondary 9.0-inch display serves as the Polestar 3’s gauge cluster. We expect to see Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard features, but we know that all models will come with in-dash navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and four USB-C charging ports. The first run of Polestar 3s will also come standard with a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins stereo system that’s part of the Plus package which is expected to become optional after the SUV’s first model year.Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
A host of driver-assistance features are standard on every Polestar 3 model, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high-beam headlamps, and a driver-monitoring system. Later on, a LiDAR system will become an option which Polestar says will open up capability for even more advanced semi-autonomous systems. For more information about the Polestar 3’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Mazda CX-5 2024 full review #Mazda #car #luxurycar
Taking a look back at the Mazda CX-5's history is a good way to understand where it stands today. It's got as many Car and Driver 10Best awards as it does tires, but after seven years of one of our favorite crossovers, the CX-5 is due for a rejuvenation. It's still a better driver and far more luxurious than the train of competitors behind it, but the new kids on the block have quickly outshined its trophy cabinet. Under the hood is a 187-hp inline-four engine with standard all-wheel drive. The optional 256-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter is the powertrain to get, but thankfully Mazda has decided against the popular CVT and instead uses a traditional six-speed automatic transmission, which sweetens the CX-5 driving experience. While it gives up some space for the sake of style, sitting in a CX-5 is enough to convince you of its luxury. For space, we'd stick with the newer Honda CR-V or the slightly larger CX-50, but despite its age, the CX-5 still drives like it's out to prove something. What's New for 2024?
Like it did for the CX-30 crossover and 3 sedan and hatchback, Mazda adds the Carbon Turbo trim level to the CX-5 for 2024. A CX-5 Carbon Turbo is easy to spot, as it wears brown Zircon Sand paint and black trim pieces including wheels and mirror caps. Carbon Turbo models come with the optional 256-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four engine and all-wheel drive.Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2024 Mazda CX-5 starts at $30,675 and goes up to $41,975 depending on the trim and options. We think the Turbo Premium trim best exemplifies the CX-5. With the upgraded 256-hp turbocharged engine, its quickness better corresponds with its athletic handling. Its exterior is elegantly sporty with trim-specific gloss-black accents. Its interior mirrors that sportiness with red accents and stitching.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The CX-5's standard 187-hp four-cylinder engine has great throttle response when pulling away from stoplights or hustling around town, so it feels quicker than it actually is. It's at higher speeds, such as when trying to pass or merge onto the freeway, that it feels underpowered. The 256-hp turbocharged version we tested provided much quicker acceleration. Both engines pair with a snappy six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. You don't need to drive the CX-5 hard to enjoy it or to appreciate its excellence. Sure, its precise steering and composed cornering make for one helluva Sunday cruise. But it also soaks up rough roads without commotion and has the ride quality of crossovers that cost twice as much. This harmonious interplay of dynamics is unrivaled by its competitors. Pavement imperfections are isolated, road noise is minimal, and the damping is neither stiff nor floaty. At the same time, the Mazda comes alive on curvy roads. The electrically assisted steering provides satisfying responses. The Signature model we tested had a reassuring brake-pedal feel that operated without delay and without being too touchy when you apply the brakes.Towing and Payload Capacity
The Mazda CX-5 can tow up to 2000 pounds, which isn't much, but an improvement over some of its competitors, such as the Volkswagen Tiguan and Honda CR-V. The larger CX-50 can pull more, with a max trailering capacity of 3500 pounds, but that's only when it's optioned with the turbo engine, otherwise, it tows just as much as the CX-5.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
With two engine options, the CX-5 has two fuel-economy ratings. The base 2.5-liter engine is rated at 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The more powerful turbocharged engine is rated at 22 mpg city and 27 highway. We've tested both on our 75-mph highway route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, and the standard engine returned 32 mpg compared with the turbo four's 30 mpg result. For more information about the CX-5's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Wake up inside the top-tier CX-5 models and you might think you've been abducted by kidnappers driving an Audi or a Mercedes. First-rate materials and a fabulous layout make it feel especially upscale. The floor-hinged accelerator pedal feels better than the more common version that is suspended above the floor, the well-crafted steering wheel is directly in front of the driver and not offset at a slight angle, and all of the front-seat armrests are at the same height for optimal comfort. Sacrifices come in small packages: in this case, the CX-5 held just nine carry-on suitcases behind its rear seats in our testing. The storage bay does benefit from a completely flat load floor. There are also several nooks and crannies in the cabin to store smartphones and other small items. For instance, the center console has a deep tray at the front and a useful bin with a removable shelf.
