Mike Babcock Resigns - How Arrogance & Ignorance Led to His Downfall
In today's video, we delve deep into the "potential" mindset of disgraced coach Mike Babcock and his behaviour as a coach, his inability to change, and all the issues with his approach to respect, integrity, and humility.
Mike Babcock's Cinderella return story of redemption ends promptly and he gets sent packing as he deserves.
So if we want to learn about our own lives about how to be our best s or about how to navigate the world with dignity and respect and integrity then we can learn a great deal from what happens in the world around us if you are aware of the NHL if you are aware of Coach Mike Babcock and you're familiar with the story he has a decorated career certainly he won gold medals he won the stanley cup and generally speaking his credentials speak for themselves and at the same time they do not speak for his personality it's hard to know how far back his unhelpful or disgraceful behavior goes certainly there are stories from players and colleagues that point to aspects of a behavior that are unacceptable.
So let's dig into how this applies to us psychologically so just remember I am not a doctor this is not medical advice I am simply speculating commenting on how we can learn about situations like this apply them to our lives apply them to other people so that we can live a better more resilient fulfilling life so firstly Mike Babcock was fired from the Toronto maple Leafs for the treatment of players specifically Toronto May belief rookie Mitch Marner how he humiliated him tricked him into exposing his thoughts private thoughts about the players so he was then also called up on all these different accusations from the past which were affirmed by past players to me first off how in the world the Columbus Blue Jackets even and decided it was remotely a good idea to hire this jerk again is beyond me it seems completely mad and completely just stupid frankly so they hired Mike Babcock he was about to start coaching this season and then an incident surfaced on the spitting chicklets podcast that accused him outed him for doing basically the same thing that he did in the past and again just to imagine the arrogance or the narcissism of this man to be fired from the NHL for bad behavior to not take responsibility for any of that behavior and and to say all the right things with his mouths to word to mouth the words of I'm going to learn I'm going to do better all that junk.
Somehow again he crawls his way back into the NHL and what do you know nothing's changed he deserves to be fired I'm glad he was fired that's my personal opinion it it's just Madness that that even happened okay I'll stop complaining about tha

So how do you distinguish between sharing that you're kind of having a hard time or something like that and you do kind of write it a little bit in the book, but when you do acknowledge to the people around you that you're having a difficult moment because of the pain, so to speak. Is that different for you? Can can you share a little bit about the struggle without kind of burdening them, or is it kind of more one way or the other for you? I think that I think people learn to, ah, to see it. So people that I'm close with can tell what happened that day and, and they just give me space. So I can go and do whatever I need to do to sort of take care of it as best I can. So whether that's going, it's usually going to a bedroom and turning the lights out and putting my self hypnosis recording on. So I have recordings for sleep, for Pain, for all sorts of stuff. And and that sort of helps me to drop into that meditative state and I doodle. I spend a fair bit of time in trance one. Can you describe, I guess, your process of dealing with it? So you did the detox thing and then you kind of had to find some way to deal with all this. So can you sort of start tell us a bit like how that all evolved? Well, I think that complicating factors is that in 2014, I had low back issues, so I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis. And so that became daily pain added to my headaches. So it was like, what the f is going on now? And I had to figure out how to sort of manage that. So I went to physio ditches. You exercises every day. I started doing yoga every morning, at least for 15 or 20 minutes, and that was a little helpful. But once again, it didn't take the pain away completely. But I stayed away from any narcotics, so I was taking, you know, extra strength Tylenol and Advil. One of the things they told me when I left the Camp medical withdrawal unit was to combine add bone and Tylenol at the same time because they act on different centers in the brain.

Questions - hello@startswithme.ca
In the book you kind of describe there's one example or a couple examples you give of sort of bad treatment, but you were started to seek everything you possibly could write to help yourself. And within that, I what I was looking for was to get rid of it completely. I wanted to find something that would get rid of it completely. And when I went in to all these things and I'd get a little feel a little better from them, and I just said, No, it's not enough. Not enough. That was the big problem. I just want to read this because it's so funny that you just described this thing about going to a shiatsu therapist who said who explained that my headaches were caused by tight muscle knots in my neck and back, which would require deep tissue work. The pain from this work was unbearable. Is it supposed to hurt that much? I asked. Absolutely, he said. And your experience of the pain confirms that it is a deep tissue problem. I never went back for another shiatsu session. What was funny? And so as you sort of describe to the big problem was that you were trying to get rid of the pain. And maybe can you kind of talk about that? Because that's obviously at the core of most, I assume, most chronic conditions, but in particular, chronic pain and as you describe a lot. And then one of the chapters, Sex is into the Abyss. So I think as you were trying to get everything to stop it, you kind of got worse and worse. And then and it's that it got really worse when unfortunately, when I started on the narcotics and for the first six months I was on the narcotics, I felt great. The pain wasn't gone completely, but it was down low enough that I actually was feeling happy. Also, partly from the narcotics, I suppose. Right. But but also and I. And I lost weight, which I was happy about. And that first six months was, was great. So I was hooked into the fact that, that the narcotics were really helpful and I was worried about addiction. So I had a conversation with my pain specialists and about the addiction process. And the fact is, one of them said to me, listen, you have you have you go away for the summer. I went to camp for the summers. You go away for the summer and you take, you know, 25 batches of 200 milligram of fentanyl with you. And you don't overuse and you have a bottle of morphine pills at your bedside and you don't take more than you're supposed to. So we don't think you're addicted. We think you're just dependent on the medication for pain relief. So that resonated with me.
So I kept going and then the pain started to get worse and worse in spite of going up higher on the medications, trying different ones. I think I've tried pretty much everything there is. And it was all not working and it was actually making things worse. And that was my new pain specialist decided that that's what's happening is the medication, you need to come off it.
So he was telling me for the and my wife was telling me each other two years prior to when I went to camp, the medical withdrawal unit, that I needed to get off the medications and by that time was okay.
And by that time I was in bed most of the time at home, but I was still functioning. Right. And I think is so common for people. And clearly there is a overprescribing of these medications in the world. The painkillers in particular.

That in those moments of when you're facing adversity and when you're challenged and you, you should always look inside because that's where the answer lies. I did not understand that fully.
I heard that before. But I think when I went through this journey, I understood really what that what that means. And now I know where I can always find strength and and belief and motivation to to get me going. Thank you very much for this wonderful evening. Thank you very much, Louis, and appreciate. He didn't know that in the beginning or he learned that over time. It always is a practice. We get lost in the seeking, the answers outside, and that doesn't take away from the practical things of getting a coach, getting a guide or whatnot. It's the and and it's not an either or. It's and this and this and this and that. Now, I remember I was going to say, for people who don't have access to coaches and spiritual guides and therapists and all that kind of stuff, that sucks, no doubt. And certainly he has the luxury of that. And many people do. If that's not your situation, there are still many places and sources of information out there that can help. Whether or not it's to the privileged nature of a Djokovic or someone else. There are many things out there that can help you start with where you're at, what is in front of you, a book, a library. YouTube has a ton of stuff. The Internet has a ton of stuff. So you've got to start somewhere. And you can't use that as an excuse to not pursue help and change. There are, there is stuff around us that we just need to sometimes recognize that. The other thing I think is worth mentioning about Djokovic is he is so far from perfect. So he has had if you watch and if you sort of are interested in him and you start to go through YouTube clips of his play, there's so many cases where he's smashed rackets in the middle of a match, has had huge meltdowns.
He's had a very complicated, complex relationship with tennis fans. His rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have always been more popular and he's always struggled with that. And he has always I think he would probably admit this. He hasn't always managed that as well. So he's by far not a perfect human being. And I think that's so we started this by saying, should we compare ourselves to like this, like the super nature of Djokovic?
He's probably so human in so many ways. He's he is he doesn't always live up to his aspirations and ideals. He's always battling himself. In the post-game interview, post-match interview he gave last night after his big victory in the French Open, he said to his team, he said, I'm so sorry for torturing you over the last two weeks.
I know I'm like a lot, a lot to deal with. I'm very difficult to deal with, especially under stressful conditions of a big, major tournament. So he he asks a lot of the people around him. He he's probably difficult. He's probably not always nice. He's probably not always compassionate. He's not always probably understanding of other people's concerns. And he's you know, he's very hard driving both of himself and other people around him.
So I think it's just important maybe to cap this discussion off with some of that saying like he's not someone to be like, you know, wow, he's perfect. He's not. He's just a human like the rest of us battling ourselves, battling our external environment and just trying to figure out a way forward and trying to achieve some of our objectives.
So I think his moments of honesty are really beautiful. Like even those moments of where he's saying, like, these are all the things I've done, but also reflecting on his human nature, his, his, the fact that he's not easy and that he struggles with many things as well. And it'll be interesting to see. Sorry, it will be interesting to see how he deals with his post Tennis life.
Tennis gives him purpose, structure What do you do when that is? No, when he retires and he no longer has training to structure his day or that next tournament, then how strong. Are you right? So when you're when you're sort of main Harvey, your main thing has been taken away from you. How do you sort of how do you have a source of mental strength that isn't dependent on one thing

I wanted to talk to you about clutch moments. When you're in those situations, how do you avoid distractions? consciously breathing first. That's that's probably the simplest thing that you could do, but probably the most effective. I think the experience of being in this particular situation so many times before in my career helps me every next time that I have to face the adversity and face the distractions and, you know, my thoughts and what ifs and fears and so forth, I think everyone goes through that thought process is just and I don't think it's particularly bad.I was thinking it's bad. So I was trying to ignore it or I was trying to shut it down. But I think the major transformation in a positive way for me started when I was starting to acknowledge it and accept it as as part of me. It's it's it's there. My ego is there, my fears are there, everything is there, It's present. But then how will I address it in a way that is going to help me to overcome that, to transform it into positive fuel that is going to help me overcome the clutch moments that you talked about, which is feel happy and joyful and present on the court and get the best out of that experience.
Just notice the first thing said. There was my breath. We don't acknowledge enough the power of our breath when I'm working with clients one on one or really, in any scenario where we're trying to build some mental stability or flexibility or resilience, the breath is always right underneath our nose. It's right in front of us and it is tremendously powerful. So I love that he mentioned that. And then he goes in, clearly he's met with therapists or teachers or trained like mind training or whatever, because then he goes on to state. And one of the other most important lessons to learn about our psychology is he said initially he probably tried to push away as negative thoughts or make them go away or whatever. And then he transitioned into this. Turning to the negativity he uses the word ego to turning to the discomfort, turning to these negative narratives we have in our mind. And rather than pushing them away, accepting them as part of us, allowing them in, not running from them. And that is a that is the core of most psychotherapies really, is how do we face the things that we don't like, not run from them, integrate them into who we are so that we can then move on?
what's interesting is how in the sort of the mental health space, the, the spiritual space, there's always the P word used, which is practice like breathing practices, mindfulness practices. So it's like, you know, I would practice my tennis stroke in preparation for something. I would practice my breathing and practice my ability to be mindful in preparation. So I think it's relevant to maybe the previous point I made about developing those skills, like mindful breathing or being able to enter a more meditative state where you can sort of see your thoughts as passing clouds that sort of in one ear out another, or whatever metaphor you use is not something that you can just do, right? Especially when things are stressful, especially when you're in a what? The interviewer asked Djokovic. Sure, But when you're in a clutch situation, it's so challenging to control your thoughts, control your body and to control your breathing, because those things are are powerful biological forces that are operating sort of sometimes independently of our own mind, our own conscious thoughts. so getting a hold of those, I think like on on our own time matters, like spending five or 10 minutes meditating, a few minutes here and there, practicing different breathing exercises. So when it comes to entering a difficult tennis match and interview, whatever, that's that's tough. You sort of have this little tool you can put a pull out of your your toolbox and it's refined and ready to go.

I think it all starts even before you get out on the court. You know what you do to get yourself mentally prepared for the match, for you to get yourself in the right state of mind where you are, you know, calm, compulsory and enough, but yet you have the right intensity and the drive and the motivation to to play well and be dynamic and fast on the courts. beautiful. So he's just pointing out it starts before you get on the court and that's just this idea of I guess daily habits practice well if we want to grow and become more resilient or whatever the pursuit is that we are pursuing, it takes a lot of effort and practice. It's not just when it's show time or game time. So for any job, any profession, anything we want to do, he's just pointing to the fact that there's more than just working on the shot, working on the backhand, learning how to serve. There's a whole other realm of preparation and practice that goes into performing at one's best. Yeah, and I think also I definitely make this mistake of thinking I've done my homework and I'm just going to show up at something, whether it's, you know, teaching at the University of Toronto or you know, playing a tennis match and thinking that I'm going to sort of like stumble into that new place, like hop out of the car and just start doing what I've been physically practicing doing for the past few months or a few years and never ends up working like that. So even with work, I find before I have to give a lecture or run a class, I often have to go to the like. I often just go to the washroom and I'll look at myself in the mirror and say like, let's go. Let's, like bring passion, bring commitment to teaching. Let's do this. The times when I don't do that for if I'm rushed, if I'm stressed about something, I forget it's it's hard It's it's tough for me to get up to that level. So what Novak here is talking about it with Djokovic is talk about Serena. You got to be serene and intense. Yes. And that's a strange combination. So that little bit of mental prep for whatever you do, whether it's tennis, anything work related, even if it's, you know, if you can have a stressful conversation with a parent or a loved one, if you're about to go on a date sometimes just like a few minutes of like, all right, where do I need to be?

And in the book you really detail a lot of it in the whole process, which is pretty intense. To hear about it, I guess, for lack of a better description. And here I just want to read what you write, because this is obviously well, not obviously, but there's a lot of people in this situation right now as we speak and who are probably grappling with all these kind of things.
And I think hearing people like yourself talk about it is so useful. So I'm just going to read a bit pointing to what you were just saying. Eventually, it became clear that I was dependent on the narcotics for pain relief and that I was not chasing any high from the medications. The quote unquote, experts had convinced me that the body uses the narcotics to treat the pain, not to get me high.
There was always a large quantity of narcotic medications within reach on my bedside table, but I was usually able to resist the temptation to take more than was prescribed. I believed I was, quote unquote, dependent, not addicted, a solid rationalization. I manipulated my use of the medications by adding heat to the fentanyl patches during the last few hours before I could put a new patch on.
I would also split up the dose of try as I am to see if it would keep the pain under seven out of ten. This manipulation seemed to be helpful as it was administering the medication differently, but this beneficial effect also wore off with time, like everything else. And I love that you use the word rationalization because in in the 12 step addiction world, they often, they say, rationalize as justify, minimize.
And I know it's a little bit different in this context, but the way the mind thinks in that way is very similar. Well, yeah, you that's so how does anything. Right right, right. Okay. And so how did you that's the next part in the book. Here's the detox. Right. And that draw the climbing out. How did you get from that to I guess you said you had a specialist suggesting you go off the narcotics and everything.
And how did that decision come about? And can you just talk to people about the detox and the withdrawal and how you manage that? Yeah, it was well, it was it was difficult to come down and make that decision. But like I said, it took me a couple of years to come to the realization that I actually did have to do that.
So once I made that decision, I had two close friends Judy and Client who were both in addictions and said, look, go to this guy who's a specialist in addiction. Talk to him, share your story and see what he thinks. And he was the one. He was great. And he was the one who said, you know, you are dependent on the narcotics.
There's no question about it. The addiction issue isn't something that we need to talk about at this point, but you need to get off and the only way to do that is to go to the medical withdrawal unit camp. So he was the one who referred me. And I went in and I was in for seven days.
And it was the first probably the first four days, three days in particular were horrible. I mean, it was a constant sort of nausea, vomiting, everything else. And they will they gave I think for the first three days, I was able to have one out event to try and get the sleep at night. And but by day five, I was starting to feel great.
And it was in the I think it was in May one year 2010 that I sort of was able to go outside and walk around the area outside. So that's where I did most of my meditating, walking meditation and focusing on what was happening and I had all sorts of weird visits from people who were dead, which was interesting.
And I wasn't able to spend the quality of time that I wanted with them. And even when I did, I was still caught by the pain, you know? So we would go, my wife and I would go out for dinner with friends. And after dinner about a half hour after dinner, I was done. And I just go up to a bedroom and lie down, listen to my self instruction or my self-hypnosis tapes and recordings, and try and stay focused on anything that was not the pain.time that this is ruining my life and my relationships and my family.
And the only way out of it is to get off this stuff. And I guess they often say, you know, until we're in enough pain, we won't change. And so that's similar to what I guess you're describing. And it came from the external things, right? The things that matter to you in your life.
