Convert Visual FoxPro to C#.NET/SQL and Open a World of Opportunity - erwcp.com
ERW Custom Programming converts and supports all versions of FoxPro from FoxBase to Visual FoxPro 9.
The most important factor in successful FoxPro migration is having the right team in place. We have decades of experience and dedicated programmers skilled in FoxPro. We work extensively in dBase II, dBase III, Clipper, FoxBase, FoxPro for DOS, FoxPro for Windows and Visual FoxPro. We have been converting Visual FoxPro to .NET since 2013. We have been converting one version of FoxPro to another for over 20 years. The most important factor in the cost of converting is the way in which the program was written. If you would like us to analyze your program, check out https://erwcp.com/getting-started/
In order to reduce the cost of converting Visual FoxPro to .NET, we have developed dozens of tools to:
• assist in determining the scope and cost to convert your program
• make converting to any language easier
• automatically perform some of the conversion process
We have auto-conversion programs that can do in a few seconds what would take a programmer much longer. Even if the programmer knew how to find all of the objects in a screen with their properties and methods, it would take the programmer an hour or more for moderately complex screens and many hours for large complex screens. Similarly, we have auto-convert programs for most of the code in the events of a form and for the code in programs (PRGs).
Benefits:
• Save many thousands of dollars in conversion costs.
• Save more money by not having typos that may not appear until you are in production.
• If your production program is being changed frequently, save the additional cost of having to change both the old and new system. This is even more expensive when a change is made in the production system and not in the new system.
• If you have already started converting to C#, we can help you with just the screens (or just the reports), if you wish.

Costs of Converting Visual FoxPro
There are three main options to consider as you plan for a Visual FoxPro conversion:
• a manual rewrite
• auto-conversion with manual rewrite, and
• auto-conversion only (manual rewrite finished by in-house programmer)
What's best for your business depends on many factors, including your budget, time-frame and programmer's capabilities. The most important factor in the cost of converting is the way in which the program was written. If you would like to discuss your program, call (248) 683-4182 or set up a Zoom call: https://erwcp.com/contact-us/

Visual FoxPro Programmers Adapt
Remain relevant in your field: convert your skills right along with a Visual FoxPro conversion. Competitive businesses are upgrading to 64-bit computing and a language with a future. Be prepared to leave VFP and support your client through a conversion.
ERW Custom Programming will support you in migrating from VFP to C#.NET. We have been converting Visual FoxPro to .NET since 2013. We have been converting one version of FoxPro to another for more than 20 years.
Lead the charge in helping your client modernize and enhance productivity with a system that supports:
• web-enabled apps
• auto-notifications
• real-time reports
We have dozens of programs that fully automate most of the VFP to C# conversion. Learn C#.NET while assisting us in converting your client’s program. Make minor cosmetic adjustments to forms and reports and assist with VFP code that can’t be automatically converted.
By the time the program is converted, you’ll be able to do all of the routine maintenance as well as some of the more complex programming. And we’re always available to assist. Your client remains your client throughout the process.
By taking advantage of our auto-convert programs AND by keeping you—who is well-versed in their program--as their main programmer, you’ll help save your client’s business substantial amounts of time and money. It’s a win-win.

Where Is Your Visual FoxPro Source Code?
If your FoxPro / Visual FoxPro system goes down, can you compile your program? Be prepared. Your programmer can set up a simple batch file for you to run. If your programmer refuses to do this for you, something is wrong. You need a new programmer.
If you hired us to support your FoxPro / Visual FoxPro program, the first thing we would need to know is: Exactly where is the project file located? Which computer did your programmer work on? A company computer or a personal laptop?
Then we would open the project file and attempt to create a new executable with a name different from your production executable. Everything in the new executable should work exactly as your existing one. If it doesn't, you've got trouble.
If your programmer intentionally keeps the FoxPro source code from you and has encrypted the executable, you've got a problem.

Supporting Visual FoxPro [Backup Your VFP Programmer]
Every good business owner is careful to back up their data. But is it also important to back up your programmer?
If your program is critical to the smooth operation of your company and you don’t have a backup programmer, you are putting the fate of your company in the hands of one person. No matter how healthy, careful, or loyal your programmer is, if for any reason he or she becomes unavailable, you potentially face critical consequences.
If you don’t have a backup programmer, you’re taking a serious and unnecessary risk. While there is some cost to bring in a backup programmer, here are two great benefits:
• Your programmer can introduce your system to the backup programmer. This is much more efficient than bringing in a backup programmer when your original programmer is no longer available and your system is down.
• Your programmer doesn’t know everything. When you ask him if he can do a certain program, he may say he can but it could take a very long time. A backup programmer may have already done that type program and be able to deliver it to you quickly.
A Visual FoxPro program is comprised of screens (forms), reports, libraries, and lines of code (largely found in .PRG files and .SCX events). In the program we’re currently converting, there are more than 300,000 lines of computer instruction that are contained in hundreds of separate files. There are hundreds of report files and program files and more than one hundred screens. All together, these comprise your program. They are source code.
Do you know where your Visual FoxPro source code is? If not, you may be in real trouble.
If you hired us to fix your program, the first thing we would need to know is: Exactly where is the project file? Next, we would want to know:
Which computer did your programmer work on? Then we would open the project file and attempt to create a new executable with a name different from your production executable. (You find the “executable” file using File Explorer, then double-click on that file name to run it.)
Everything in the new executable should work exactly as your existing one.
Does your Visual FoxPro programmer work on his laptop and then send the resulting executable to you, but not the source code? You’ve got a big problem. You don’t have the source code.
Can you create an executable identical to your production one? If not, you are in real trouble.
Has your programmer intentionally kept the source code from you and encrypted the executable? If yes, then you are in real trouble.
If your system goes down, it stays down until he provides you with the source code. If he is unavailable, you are in real trouble.
You should be able to compile your program without any professional help. Your programmer can set up a simple batch file for you to run. If your programmer refuses to do this for you, something is wrong. You need a new programmer.
In one instance we encountered, after working as an employee of a company for many years, a Visual FoxPro programmer resigned. The company hired him back as an independent contractor but didn’t have a written agreement as to who owned the VFP source code. When he decided to stop working for this company, he kept the source code, claiming he owned the copyright to it. The company didn’t have time for a legal battle because they needed their lucrative manufacturing operation to continue unimpeded. The company ended up paying the programmer almost $100,000 for the source code.
Be certain that you own your source code.
Visual FoxPro has enormous power that can be used unwisely by a “clever” programmer to make a program needlessly complex. And when it is needlessly complex, it is very difficult for a new programmer to make changes quickly.
One example is the overuse of “macros”. Example: x = “do customer” is set in a program named “a.prg”. The command “&x” is issued. This is seen by the computer as “do customer” but a human must go searching for where the value of “x” was set. It can, and often does, keep changing meanings from program to program. If this seems confusing, it is.
This is needlessly time-consuming. In our most recent Visual FoxPro conversion, there were more than 1000 macros. We had to write special programs to help us find the values for the macros when they appeared.
Hiring a backup Visual FoxPro support programmer for your company will add accountability, preventing needlessly complex coding and a hijacking of your source code.
ERW has specialized in Visual FoxPro since its very beginning. We’ve taken over more than 200 programs in the past four decades. We’re familiar with many different programming styles, which is critical when supporting a program or converting to another language.

Different Leagues: Timing is Everything
You’ve worked hard to make your business what it is today. Maybe you acquired a business, adding a valuable asset to your portfolio, but the company software is outdated, incompatible with web and mobile applications which are the gold standard today.
If you’re using any version of FoxPro, it’s past time to upgrade to a modern language. Microsoft ended all support of Visual FoxPro seven years ago. Maintaining the status quo—keeping VFP--puts your business at great risk.
While the competition moves ahead, increasing productivity and customer satisfaction, your business is locked out of progress. Staying in FoxPro limits your capabilities. Clients want work-in-progress reports and real-time notifications, no matter the time of day or their location.
Converting to a modern language like C#.NET with a SQL or My SQL server will allow you to streamline communication and operations, eliminating waste.
Staying with your old software is like choosing little league when you could play in the majors. ERW can help your business become great with custom software solutions that will help you exceed customers’ expectations, retain excellent talent and enhance security and stakeholder satisfaction.

Modernize Your Systems With Tech-Savvy Mobile and Web Applications
Successful businesses don’t just happen. They are made by the smart work of consistently learning what customers need, then promptly meeting those needs.
Think of poor experiences you’ve had, waiting for an order or even just a status update. Slow communication is annoying at best and unacceptable at worst, potentially causing great loss. When clients are made to wait, unable to get real-time work-in-progress reports, they’re tempted—sometimes forced—to seek better options.
The competition has a streamlined, web-enabled interface, allowing easy input and output. Customers don’t waste time, neglecting other critical tasks, because they can easily access the information needed to make timely decisions.
Stakeholders—suppliers and employees—need mobile, user-friendly applications that will eliminate redundancy and streamline workflows. Investors want to see you using resources wisely, handling data securely, meeting deadlines and exceeding customers’ expectations.
Waiting to modernize your software systems is very risky business. Proactive business leaders don’t sit back while the competition advances. Let ERW Custom Programming help you transform your business with tech-savvy custom software solutions.
We are Visual FoxPro experts, converting and supporting all versions of FoxPro from FoxBase to Visual FoxPro 9. We convert Visual FoxPro to C#.NET with either a Microsoft SQL or MySQL database. We’ve also worked extensively in dBase II, dBase III and Clipper. We have many automatic conversion tools and can also provide quality support for your existing custom Visual FoxPro program.

What Is Your Source Code IQ? Avoiding Visual FoxPro/FoxPro Emergencies with ERW Custom Programming
In the past 40 years I have inherited a few dozen major FoxPro/Visual FoxPro applications and a few hundred minor ones. These recommendations are based upon real world experiences and in some cases, real-world disasters. If you are the owner of a Visual FoxPro custom program, I hope you will carefully consider learning from my experiences.
Source code: What is it? Do I own it?
• You, as a business owner, may feel that this is too technical. But I can assure you that if you ever lose your source code, you will wish that you had taken a few minutes to understand what I am about to share with you. If you still have questions after reading this, feel free to contact us.
• What is source code? Few people know what this is, but it could be critical to the health of your company that you not only know what it is but that you understand what I will be talking about below. To learn more about what source code is, visit: https://www.webopedia.com/definitions...
Failure to pay attention to your source code can have very serious consequences. I can tell you story after story about this. The financial consequences ranged from a few thousand dollars to in excess of well over $100,000. Here is one of them:
• ABC, Inc. had a programmer named “Joe.” Joe worked as an employee for ABC for many years. One day he went into business for himself and was hired back into ABC as a contractor where he continued to work for several years. When Joe left ABC, he demanded $200,000 for his ownership of the program.
• ABC was shocked. But after consulting with their attorney, they paid Joe more than $100,000 for the program that they had paid Joe hundreds of thousands of dollars to write in the first place. In many states, the outside programmer can claim rights to all or part of the work depending on many variables.
• Where did they go wrong? They failed to have Joe sign over any copyright claims before allowing him to resume work as a contractor.
You should be able to answer “yes” to the following questions:
• Do you have the source code in your possession? All of your source code?
• Do you know how to compile that source code?
• Do you have a written ownership agreement with any independent contractors who may have worked on your program?
• Are you certain that your programmers always update your copy of the source code?
Common issues with source code:
• Programmer keeps the latest source code on his laptop.
• Programmer claims ownership of part of or all of the source code.
• Programmer makes some changes to the source code on his laptop and some on your server.
Source code: How you can be sure that you always have the latest source code?
• You should regularly ask your programmer to generate the latest executable (.exe) from source code that resides on your computer, not his laptop. If he works off site, ask him to put the latest source code on your computer every time there is a change.
• Ask him to show you how to generate the executable. Doing this is a relatively simple process in any language. An example for Visual FoxPro programs:
• open Visual FoxPro
• when the command window opens, “set default to mydrive”
• then “modify project myprogram.pjx”
• then build the project, but with an exe named “myprogramtest.exe”
• If you keep a list in chronological order of the changes made, you can check to see if you have the latest version by testing the last few changes.
• You will need him to walk you through the above steps.
• Ask him to write a program that can automatically do the steps above. It will look like this:
o open Visual FoxPro
o in the command window “do compilemyprogram.prg”
o this program will contain two lines of code:
set default to mydrive
BUILD EXE myprogramtest FROM myproject.pjx
• You can then run “myprogramtest.exe”.
• Finally, be sure you have copies of your source code off-site as well as “in the cloud”. Dropbox.com is an excellent place for cloud storage. Zip up the source code and password protect it. Winzip.com is an excellent tool.
All of this may seem “too technical” for you. But if you ever lose your source code, you will be facing a real disaster.
Feel free to contact us to discuss this matter. Call or set up a Zoom meeting. If you need help with FoxPro or Visual FoxPro, contact us.

Visual FoxPro Support with ERW Custom Programming, Inc.
ERW Custom Programming converts and supports all versions of FoxPro from FoxBase to Visual FoxPro 9.
Microsoft ended all support of Visual FoxPro nearly seven years ago. Some business owners are choosing to convert to C#.NET while others may add a SQL backend or switch to “off-the-shelf” software. If you stay with Visual FoxPro, you will save money in the short term and maintain a program your employees know well. We can support you. We have specialized in Visual FoxPro since its very beginning. We started with dBase II, then dBase III, then Clipper, then FoxBase, then FoxPro for DOS and Windows, then all versions of Visual FoxPro. We've taken over more than 200 programs and are familiar with many different programming styles, which is critical when supporting a program or converting to another language.
