Presidential VIP Protection Unit, Kings Guard, or Thugs!? Watch and read below...
In this video, Stan Bezuidenhout from IBF Investigations - a former Specialist Police Reservist and current Court Expert - weighs in and shares his thoughts on the events of this last week.
The recent incident of the brutal assault of three men, caught on a video showing seven SAPS VIP protection officers assigned to Deputy President Paul Mashatile has placed the issue of the ‘blue light brigades’ back in the national spotlight.
The video of the harrowing incident has since been shared thousands of times on social media. It shows a group of heavily armed men alighting from two black BMW X5s.
The men can be seen dragging Fisher from the driver's side of the vehicle and assaulting him. Two passengers, who have since been identified as military trainees, were also assaulted at the side of the road while Fisher lies motionless on the ground. The guards then get back into their vehicles and drive off. The officers serve as the protection detail for South African Deputy President, Paul Mashatile.
According to the most seriously hurt victim, he had no reason to suspect that the passengers in the BMWs were law enforcement as none of their vehicles had their blue lights flashing or sirens to identify them as police.
He said when a second BMW stopped in front of his vehicle, he was forced to the side of the N1 highway. He said the officers' attempts to break through the front window failed but they succeeded in breaking the back window using a rifle and opened the driver's side of the door. He said he was then hit with the rifle and lost consciousness.
Police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has laid charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, pointing of a firearm and malicious damage to property at the Sandton police station against the group of VIP protection officers accused of beating three men in Joburg.
This is according to Ipid spokesperson Robbie Raburabu who said the case against the SAPS VIP protection officers was opened on Monday night, after Ipid investigators obtained statements and interviewed the victims. The Ipid is leading the criminal investigation against the SAPS VIP officers.
The SAPS also earlier said that the three victims, who are attached to the SANDF, have since opened a case against the Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s VIP protection officers.
The officers have also been issued with intent to suspend letters.
National SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, explained that, in line with labour procedures, the officers will have the opportunity to give reasons as to why they should not be suspended under the circumstances.
Meanwhile, the SA Defence Union confirmed that the victims were SANDF members.
“The victims were en route from Johannesburg to Pretoria when a black SUV appeared next to their vehicle while one of the occupants of the SUV was pointing a firearm at the victims' vehicle,” said SANDU national secretary general, Pikkie Greeff.
“The victims' vehicle was subsequently boxed in by more SUVs and forced to the left side of the N1 highway. The occupants of the SUV exited their vehicles, surrounding the victims' vehicle and attempted to smash the windscreen of the victims' vehicle and assault the occupants of the vehicle,” he said.
He added that the victims were interviewed by Ipid and were advised to refrain from engaging with any police officers during the investigation.
"SANDU agrees with this approach and remains in support of the victims," Greef said in a statement.
The union further condemned the act of brutality.
The Road Traffic Act states that only vehicles belonging to and vehicles operated by members of to the South African Police Service, the SANDF Military Police or a Municipal Police Service such as the Johannesburg Metro Police Department may legally use and fit blue lights.
Although the circumstances surrounding what led to the VW Polo motorists and his passengers being assaulted, remain unknown at this stage, it is believed that they may have failed to make way for the blue lights brigade in their two police owned BMW X5s.
The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s portfolio committee on community safety has strongly condemned the “violent behaviour” of a group of SAPS VIP protection officers who were caught on camera assaulting three people in a viral video which has caused national furore.
The provincial legislature has added its voice to the numerous voices calling for action against the officers who are attached to Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s security detail, who was not present during the incident.

Training: Get Closer
Pay attention to the movement of the officers during this situation.
Situations like this will more than likely have multiple Officers involved. More is not always better in certain cases. For example, if you have 3 tactically sound officers but one officer who is not; that one officer can change the entire situation and it may not be for the better.
If you have cover: use it. If you feel like you need to “get closer” because of your shooting ability seek out higher level training and train consistently.
Movement: this comes down to experience, exposure in a training environment, physical ability and mental/cognitive ability to process information within the situation.
Crossfire: Be aware of what is beyond the target. Be proficient with whatever weapon system you are carrying or issued. Due to the fact that situation are constantly evolving reassessing your backdrop is essential.
Be ready to fight. If someone points a gun at you....if you don’t know the response to this...you are a liability.

Training Points: Reports of a man that stabbed a woman
Backstory: Officers from the Salt Lake City Police Department were called to the scene after reports that a man stabbed a woman.
The body worn video showed an officer pull up to the scene as one of the construction workers approached and pointed out the individual as the man he said the woman identified as the suspect.
In the video, the officer was joined by another and they walked towards the individual.
Officers did work.
Training Points:
1. If it’s known the individual is armed and multiple officers are available then an intermediate/less than lethal and deadly force approach can be a viable option. Also keep in mind crossfire and backdrop.
2. The ability to create distance is critical especially when close proximity weapons are involved ie knife.
Distance = Time = Ability to process information = Appropriate application of force
The ability to create distance is purely based on ones ability. We always want to be able to perform optimally so training appropriately is critical. Variables such as gear set up, uniform mobility, physical mobility, agility, mental capacity, just to name a few will play a role in the outcome.
We know that running backwards is not optimal for multiple reasons when a threat is closing the distance. One major reason is we are not braking up the path for the threat. By rotating the hips we can change the angle this 1. Creates more speed/power while changing direction 2. It’s a more stable platform if you have to engage. 3. It create more TIME which creates distance.

Truck vs Pothole - R54 between the Vaaldam and Villiers
The truck driver was fortunate to not have suffered any injuries after losing control of his vehicle due to hitting a large pothole on the R54 between Villiers and Vereeniging.
The truck reportedly struck a pothole while driving at a high speed, causing it to veer off the road and the trailer to tip over, spilling its contents onto the roadway.
The road from N3 at Villiers to Vereeniging has been a source of concern for drivers due to the prevalence of large potholes. Approximately 10 km of the road towards Vereeniging is affected by these hazardous road conditions.
There have been reports of fatal accidents believed to be caused by the potholes on this section of the highway.
The tweet mentions that a truck lost its container after hitting a pothole on the same road previously. Link Attached:

Potholes can cause significant strain on a truck's suspension and shocks when absorbing the impact, leading to costly damage to the vehicle and even potentially fatal accidents.
The potholes on the R54 are extremely severe, to the extent that they can engulf the wheels of smaller vehicles, causing them to hit the ground and result in a crash.
Truck drivers and all motorists are advised to exercise caution when driving on the R54 due to the high risk of losing control and colliding with opposing vehicles if a pothole is hit at a high speed.

Tipper Truck into House - N2 Whitecliff, KZN, South Africa
The situation is tense in Pongola after a side tipper truck driver lost control and crashed into a house at Waterbus in Pongola this Friday morning.
In videos of the crash scene, community members can be heard shouting and baying for the driver’s blood.
On several occasions the Pongola community have banned trucks from using the N2 through Pongola after a side tipper truck collided with a scholar transport bakkie killing 20 people last year.
The community only allowed the trucks back onto the N2 after they pledged to drive safely. It’s feared that the accident this morning may reignite protests against the truckers again.
