1st Look: Brownells BRN-180
You can find links here: https://kitbadger.com/1st-look-brownells-brn-180/
Today I take a 1st Look at the New Brownells BRN-180. A retro clone of the original AR-18 from ArmaLite. This particular model has a 10.5" 5.56 barrel and uses a short stroke piston system, which alleviates the need for a buffer tube. This opens the option up for folding stocks and braces, such as the New SB Tactical TF1913. I look forward to putting in more time with this little piece of history.
You can find the 10.5" Upper Here.
And find the BRN-180 Lower Here.

In this video I walk through how to install a Law Tactical Folding Stock Adapter (Gen-3) onto an AR-15 Lower Receiver. The host weapon I use is a Sugar Weasel by Q LLC.
For the installation you'll need a few tools. In the video I use a Fix-It-Sticks set. Along with the Castle Nut Wrench.

Corona Virus, The Truth and a North Star
The Corona Virus is here, it is a thing. While we may not know how COVID-19 will play out, I'm fairly certain it will be very difficult for most everyone on a lot of levels. Difficult times are rarely fun, but provide us with the opportunity to learn and grow. You will be challenged in the coming weeks and months. How will you be remembered on the other side?

Brownells XBRN177E2 Retro Rifle
Brownells has done a pretty amazing job with their line of Retro Clone Rifles. The XBRN177E2 is no exception. Their XM177 Clone is a rad little carbine.
I used the rifle to compete in the Retro Division of Desert Brutality 2020, a shooting event put on by KE Arms and InRange TV. It did great for me down there and ran flawlessly.
When it comes to accuracy, the 1/12 twist barrel definitely likes the lighter loads. It can't stabilize heavier bullets past probably 62 grains.

Heckler & Koch P30
After using the Heckler & Koch P30 in a Force on Force class with AMTAC Shooting, I finally got around to reviewing this pistol…
At the end of the day I think the HK P30 is a really good pistol that bridges the gap from Concealed Carry / EDC (Every Day Carry) to Duty Pistol depending on your needs. Having said that, it also comes down to does a DA/SA (Double Action / Singe Action) trigger work for you and does your grip interfere with the slide stop…

Ops-Core Mk1 Glasses *Performance Protective Eyewear*
One could make a pretty compelling argument about how important eyesight is. To that end, when shooting, be it on the range or out in the field if your job requires it, protecting your eyes is paramount. Best practice is to always make sure you have ballistic lenses when engaged in said activities. Enter the Ops-Core Mk1 Performance Protective Eyewear by Gentex.
The Ops-Core Mk1 Glasses feature aluminum frames and can be used with a variety of interchangeable ballistic lenses. Ranging both in color and tint as well as different levels of laser protection. The low profile frames are comfortable under any type of over ear hearing protection and the lenses, in my experience, have done a pretty amazing job stopping spalling from shooting a steel target at close range.
You can find the Ops-Core Mk1 Glasses here.

First Spear: Operator Contact Glove
When it comes to shooting, or most any activity, gloves can go a long way in saving your hands. From keeping your hands from burning by accidental contact with hot objects, thinks suppressors, or even just being a sacrificial layer when manipulating something sharp. The downside of course is losing dexterity and the ability to manipulate a trigger. That is what defines shooting gloves from most any other kind of gloves out there. Enter the First Spear Operator Contact Gloves.
The First Spear OCG are made of materials that won't melt or drip, which can be hugely important depending on where you are working and what your mission is. For me they provide enough dexterity to manipulate rifles as well as pistols, which is the real test in my opinion for gloves.
You can find the Fist Spear OCG here.

Q-Sert : The Attachment Method
When it comes to methods of attaching equipment to hand guards, there is generally two different methods. You have KeyMod, which is great for shelving units, and there is M-LOK. Past that there is legacy Picatinny Rail. Q LLC has brought something new to the table though, largely under the radar, which is their Q-Sert.
Q-Sert is a method of attaching accessories to the handguard that offers a stronger mount up than M-Lok, a more repeatable zero and provides a lighter handguard at the same time. Magic right? It took a number of engineers to make it happen…
Right now Q-Sert hand guards are available on the Fix Rifle, MiniFix and Side Chick Chassis. They are currently working on AR-15 hand guards as well as more Q-Sert direct mount options.

1st Look: CMMG 5.7 Upper & Trijicon SRO
Here is a 1st Look at some new gear I just got in. Starting with the new CMMG 5.7x28 Upper Receiver with a 8" barrel. Rather than going to traditional PCC (Pistol Caliber Carbine) route of using a dedicated lower receiver to take pistol magazines, they have came up with 40 round magazines that fit into a standard AR-15 lower receiver.
To top the new little gun I have a Trijicon SRO in a Scalarworks LEAP Mount. And since shooting suppressed is always fun, I tried the Q Erector Silencer on the gun as well. All together making for a nice light package.

Brownells Retro M16E1
Eugene Stoner did some incredible work. One of his pivotal pieces, which most all AR-15 rifles trace their linage back to, is the M16E1. Originally produced and fielded in Vietnam in 1964. Brownells has released a faithful copy of that amazing rifle in their Retro Line.
The Brownells XBRN16E1 is an amazing rifle. Featuring XM16E1 style upper and lower receiver, both matte grey anodized. A 20" 5.56x45 chrome lined barrel with 1-12" twist, 3 prong flash hider, true to type furniture, the whole bag. Owning this rifle is like having a little piece of history.
And on top of it all, it is a ton of fun to shoot. The rifle length gas system and buffer system make for a smooth recoil impulse. Not to mention the accuracy. I'm pretty impressed with this rifle on that front.
You can find this and the rest of Brownells Retro Line here.

NOCO Genius Boost + 1000 Amp Power Pack
You can find it here: https://amzn.to/41KGB9S
Sometimes a small investment can afford you a huge savings. I think the NOCO Genius Boost + 1000 Amp Power Pack is one of those things. Car batteries die, either due to the cold or they just get worn out and can no longer take a charge. This power pack creates a instant solution to get you back on the road.
This power pack is incredibly easy to use and can quickly get your car started even if you battery is completely dead. Additionally it offers a USB outlet that will let you charge your phone if needed. Since cell phones are often our lifeline in emergencies, this is hugely advantageous. Especially if our car troubles can't be solved by jumping a dead battery.
The savings in time and frustration by being able to jump start a dead battery, or even that of another person, can't be understated. What is the alternative, waiting hours for Roadside Assistance?
You can find the NOCO Genius Boost + here.

AMTAC Blades Northman
You can find links here: https://kitbadger.com/amtac-blades-northman/
The Northman Knife by AMTAC Blades is probably one of the best knives of its kind. A true blending of both utility and defensive capability with respect to pretty much every aspect of the knife.
The knife was designed by Bill Rapier of AMTAC Shooting. With his experience in the SEAL Teams, time training with Sayoc Kali and time spent out of doors, he has managed to do an amazing job loading the Northman with practical features.
Each Northman comes with either a serrated or plain blade, a belt or pocket Fire Sheath with built in ferro rod, training blade and storage sheath (for when using the training blade).
You can find the Northman here.

Strawberry Mountain 4.0 Part - 1
Here we are with another winter adventure up Strawberry Mountain. She is like my muse, a albeit unwilling muse…
After running into difficulties with trying to get up Strawberry Mountain the week before, and having to call of the trip, I head back up the following week on a solo winter backpacking trip. It turned into a much longer hike than I had anticipated and my pack was way heavier than I would have like, but at the end of the day, it is another adventure…

Strawberry Mountain 4.0 Part - 2
While some adventures don't go as planned, it doesn't make them any less of an adventure. This attempt at Strawberry Mountain wasn't what I had envisioned…
I ended up making the right choice and coming down. Even though I was only 2.5 miles from the top, and the weather and filming would have been epic, I was running out of fuel to melt snow for water. But I still made a trip out of it by spending that night down at a lower elevation by a pretty cool waterfall.
Every adventure, and especially those in winter months, offer the chance to learn about you and your gear. Always a positive.

1st Look: NeoMag - Mossberg MC2C - AR500 Target Solutions TSR
Today I headed out to the range to try some new gear that came in. First off, a new target set up from AR500 Target Solutions. It is their Tactical Short Range Target with Reactive Bullseye and Hostage. I also took the chance to shoot the New Mossberg MC2C Pistol that arrived, and lastly, my friends over at NeoMag sent out a couple of their in pocket magazine holders.
Once I got the target set up, I went to work getting some reps in. Shooting Minuteman Munitions 124gr TMJ Training Ammo. Everything worked fine as long as I did my part. There is definitely a little bit of a learning curve with the NeoMags, but as the range session progressed, I saw marked improvement.

A Winter Hike: February 16th 2020
Sometimes it is good to grab your backpack and head out for adventure. My boys and I did just that on a Sunday afternoon.
We drove out to the National Forest and started off down the trail. Eventually we found a good spot, set up our Simple Theory Gear Pack Stove, harvested some wood with our Terava Skrama 240 (first time using the big knife by Varusteleka) and got our fire going. After making some hot chocolate we roasted some hot dogs. And finally, having lost the light, we packed up and headed home by flashlight. Another adventure in the books…
