Pearl Farms and Passage to Tahiti - Ep. 91
We head to the only pearl farm (Havaiki Lodge) on the atoll that still allowing tours during COVID, although it was all in French so we didn't understand anything. We then prep to leave Fakarava and sail off to Tahiti crossing the lagoon entrance exactly at the slack tide mark. It was a little bumpier of a ride than we expected. We pass the sailboat we locked with in the Panama Canal in the middle of the ocean and hail them on VHF before making first sight of Tahiti at sunrise.

Last of the Marquesas and passage to Fakrava - Ep. 89
After only a couple days in Hiva Oa, we needed to get moving towards Tahiti. Leslie commemorated his Pacific crossing by getting a tattoo. He flew out of the island the next day. That same day, the rest of us set sail for Fakara on a 4 day and 550 nautical mile sail.

Exploring Fakarava Atoll - Ep. 90
Pulling into Fakarava felt like heaven. It was the first night in months we didn't have any swell, and it reminded us what the cruising life was all about again. We explored much of the island in a day via bikes and had a blast doing it! This little gem in the Tuamotu Archipelago of the South Pacific is a must see if you're cruising through.

Hiva Oa and the Marquesas - Ep. 88
We had never been so happy to be on land after arriving in Hiva Oa in the Marquises (Marqueses) after 23 days at sea. We run into some issue with check in due to COVID 19 restrictions and had to fix some broken items that happened at sea, but we legally got in. We explore the island via a rental truck and live off of 1-2 day old pizza out of the bed.

Pacific Ocean Crossing Pt. 1 - Ep. 86
We finally start the 24 day Pacific Ocean Crossing, sailing from the Galapagos waters and heading towards the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. We do some offshore fishing, catch some Mahi Mahi and Yellowfin Tuna! We have some bilge water that just can't get pumped out with the boat heeling over so we pull up the floorboards and start using a bucket. We celebrate crossing the halfway mark (1500 miles) with some cold beers!

Swimming with Sea Lions, Sharks, and Turtles (San Cristobal Galapagos 360 Tour) - Ep. 84
With only a few days before we departed, we squeezed in one more tour to see the island. This time we did it via water. You're not allowed to explore in your own boat. You must use a local tour company, and you can't even dingy into shore on your own.
We decided to go with Galápagos Eco Fishing for about $120 per person for a full day tour including lunch around the island to snorkel various spots. It was a perfect way to see the island in limited time, and our staff was awesome! We do wish we could have kept one of the wahoo though, but we got a few pieces of sashimi from them.

Galapagos Tortoises and Van Tour of San Cristobal - Ep. 83
With our final crew member for the Pacific passage, Leslie, arriving. The band was all together and we ventured out on a self led bus tour across the island of San Cristobal to see the sights. ($100 USD total) We headed up first to the highest point of the now extinct volcano at El Junco, then to a Giant Tortoise reserve , and ended the day taking a dip in the South Pacific at Puerto Chino. Puerto Chino means Chinese port because when viewed from the ocean it looks like a Chinese hat. We had blast on the tour and were happy to see a few sights before having to head across the ocean for 23 days!

Arrival into the Galapagos Islands (San Cristobal) - Ep. 81
After a long and somewhat eventful 9 days at sea, we arrived in the Galapagos and check in. We needed to apply weeks beforehand and use an agent. They brought everybody and their mother aboard to check us in searching the boat for certain foods, expired medicine, etc. At the end of the day we had everything in order and just needed to towel up some oil in the engine bilge. We got on shore and had a good lunch and explored San Cristobal's main town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The next day we head off to see some marine iguanas and end the night testing out the local nightlife.

Passage to Galapagos (Crossing the Equator) - Ep. 80
We finally leave Panama enroute to Galapagos! It was a 9-day sail where we saw dolphins, turtles, sharks and lots of birds before finally arriving in San Cristobal. The birds ended up bending our wind vane and followed us the entire trip. We experienced 4-5 days of squally weather while crossing the ITCZ where we didn’t see the sun or moon due to cloud coverage from a giant system that just hovered over us. Our Genoa sail broke at the clue and we had to take it down while moving, luckily, we had spares that we could use, but it was pretty difficult getting it up with winds and the seas kicking. Our crew member, Don, during one of the night shifts accidentally kicked our helm seat into the Ocean. We celebrate crossing the equator with Full Send and go from Pollywog to Shellback with a ceremony presided over by Don who had crossed the equator before in the Canadian Navy.

Our friend Diana comes down to help us cross the canal as a line handler, but before we cross the canal we do some site seeing! First we check out the old Spanish Fort San Lorenzo built in the late 1500’s on the Chagres River about 8 miles from Colon. Then we check out the old US Army Coastal Artillery Batteries on Fort Sherman, where the jungle has reclaimed most of the historic site. Then we set off for a trip to Isla Grande which is a part of the San Blas islands and check out Latin Americas highest light house before heading to Panama City for a few days before getting ready to transit the Canal!

Crossing the Canal Again? And More Things Break! - Ep. 75
After we crossed the Panama Canal. We said goodbye to Diana and headed back to Illinois and Florida respectively to visit family, get doctors check ups, and order a few parts for the boat.
Alan took a side trip down to Guatemala to visit a friend working there, and Jason came back down from Chicago with his friend James to help Damaris and Rudolf take their boat (S/Y Carrousel) across the canal. James ran into a little trouble after swimming in the lake this time, but we made it across!
We start to tackle a few broken items on the boat with fixing a crappy soldering job on the windless and our stern water tank starts to leak.
Marina Prices at La Playita Marina were horrible and anchoring overnight not on the boat was too dangerous from theft, so we moved to Vista Mar Marina further west.

Palacio de las Garzas I Panama Presidential Palace - Ep. 76
We take a personal tour of the Presidential Palace in Panama, called the Palacio de las Garzas (Herons' Palace) with our friend and fellow West Point Graduate Mario!
We finally get our new Spinnaker sail! We checkout the views from Gamboa. As we wait on confirmation on when French Polynesia will open, we begin tackling some items on the boat, mainly getting the cockpit cushions made and installing the new Genoa furling line!

The Colon location is in the port area, and the Balboa location is by Niko's Cafe. They don't speak English. There is no on site ATM to pull money out, and you must pay in cash. We were told to anchor in "the flats" outside shelter bay at 12 pm but the advisor they assign to come on your boat doesn’t arrive until 4-5 pm.
Your advisor is there to advise only and not drive the boat. Must have bottled water and a good meal for him while he is there until you get through the Gatun locks. Coffee is advised to have on board. The advisor the next day wanted some and got pissy when we didn’t have coffee or tea.
After the Gatun locks, while headed southbound to the Pacific side, you tie to a giant mooring ball that they direct you to, and they take your advisor off for the night. In the morning another advisor comes between 7-9:45 am and you motor to the pacific locks.
(5 knots min required, and our advisor kept trying to push our engine faster and we had issues for a min and almost lost our deposit. Stick to what you and your boat are comfortable with.)
After you pass through the Pacific locks that same day, they will send a boat to grab your advisor off while underway around the Balboa yacht club.

Colon (Walking around Panama's most dangerous city) - Ep. 70
Part of our Panama Canal transit process was paying for it all in the city of Colon. Multiple friends, guidebooks, and locals said this was a SUPER dangerous city to be in. So of course after we paid our transit fee, we decided to buy some cans of premixed Rum & Cokes and walk around to sight see a bit. With COVID-19 restrictions still in effect, not many bars were open nor restaurants, but we were able to see some sights none the less. We were the only tourist walking around, and did draw some attention from locals. They were overly friendly and only in some sections of the city did we feel a little out of place.

How to Cross the Panama Canal Without an Agent (Part 2, Crossing Day 1) - Ep. 73
For our 2 day southbound transit of the Panama Canal (1 day for northbound) After being told by the Canal Authority to anchor in "The Flats" at noon, we waited over 4 hours until our advisor came aboard and directed us to the canal. We tied onto a tug so we didn't have to adjust any lines on the way 85 feet up into Lake Gatun! Tying up onto a mooring buoy for the night, we make dinner and prep to finish the transit the following day.

How to Cross the Panama Canal Without an Agent (Part 1, Prep) - Ep. 72
In this episode, we go over the preparation process on how to cross (transit) the ⛴Panama Canal🚢. We walk you through what we did, how much it cost us, and lessons learned. It ended up being super simple and we are glad we didn't pay and extra $500 for an agent to do it for us. Hopefully the information will help those looking to do the same. Below are some links to things we talk about, as well as the phone numbers we called.
We crossed January 2021 in our 40’ sloop. This should be the same route all boats under 65ft take I believe, and prices may change as this video ages.

Sail to Panama, New Year's Eve - Ep. 69
We do a 2 day sail from San Andres Colombia to Panama to get ready for the Panama Canal crossing, find out we have a pretty cool feature on our autopilot, go over our Radar system and dodge a lot of container ships waiting to transit the canal! We test negative for Covid and ring in the New Years with some new friends at Shelter Bay Marina

San Andres, Colombia Christmas - Ep. 68
Legally in Colombia, we head out and explore the island of San Andres just in time for Christmas. We bid farewell to James to head back to the USA, and we spend Christmas Eve with a new friend that invited us to his local neighbor hood to show us who they celebrate the holiday. We try some local food and drinks, specifically the island's dish of Rundon!

Navigating Bureaucratic Red Tape San Andres & Providencia, Colombia - Ep. 67
After 5 days at sea getting knocked around in large swells, we arrived to Providencia, Colombia. They had Hurricane IOTA rip through about a month prior and you could see the destruction as we motored into the harbor. After many attempts with an agent on land, we were denied being able to come to shore to check in, so we overnight sailed south to San Andres where there was more red tape. Luckily we were able to get in this time around!
