Okay: so, what exactly is a ghost country?

Well, it's kind of a catch-all term I made for countries that no longer exist, have limited recognition, or may exist in the future.

They're sort of here, sort of not - like a ghost.

But, even if long dead or not officially recognized, a country can still have a lasting impact. Consider the Roman Empire, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, or Soviet Union.

Of course many smaller, less-well known countries have left their own legacy too. And, this is true all over the world.
