WW2 Ace in a Sabre
WW2 Ace and Squadron Leader Major George Andrew Davis became the first American to be an Ace in two wars, excelling as the commander of the 334th Fighter Squadron in the Korean War. Despite protocol recalling Aces back to the U.S., his irreplaceable leadership kept him in Korea where he achieved Double Ace status. Davis tragically lost his life in MiG Alley in 1952, but was posthumously promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart.

9 Year Old Corporal
In August 1914 Momčilo Gavrić was orphaned at 8 years old and was adopted by unit that took revenge for the loss of his family. Assisting the troops during battle he was unflinching in his bravery and was promoted to Corporal at the age of just 9 years old. He fought in the great war and saw action in WW2 once again fighting the Germans and remained defiant even after his capture. An incredible story of bravery, friendship and duty.

Attack of the Dead Men
It’s a foggy night of August 6th, 1915 and in the trenches near Osowiec fortress the Imperial Russians are facing the Germans in what is now modern day Poland. The Germans are using a terrible weapon. Gas. A huge cloud drifts across the battlefield. The resulting effects on the soldiers gives them an unearthly appearance. Even though they have fallen, they seem to come back to life. The Germans are naturally fearful of these undead soldiers that become vicious, fast combatants full of hatred and revenge. An incredible counter attack where the fallen through sheer will went back into the fight to take their vengeance.

When a CIA Agent Fell to Earth
Francis Gary Powers was in a Lockheed U2 spy plane flying over the Soviet Union. These spy planes had been flying untouched by the USSR given their high altitude and speed. Even though missile systems had been developed to go that high, the U-2's were only in range for a short time. Powers mission was the first to attempt to fly from Pakistan right across the Soviet Union. It was a gamble. One that didn't pay off when Powers was brought down by the Soviets. The USA tried to cover up the affair saying it was a scientific weather flight. But the Soviets interrogated and tried Powers for espionage.

Meth Fueled Finn
Aimo Koivonen was a soldier in the Finnish Army. During the continuation while on patrol he and his company were being tracked by the Soviets. In desperation Aimo took Pervitin. A German wonder drug to increase endurance and performance. But taking too many, he found himself abandoned by his comrades due to his erratic behavior and on a 2 week long "trip". Hallucinating and skiing all the time, he somehow managed to evade capture, despite skiing right through the middle of a Soviet camp. After 2 weeks he was eventually found weighing only 43 kilograms and with a heart rate of 200 beats per minute.

When an Axeman Fought a Tank
Born in Ukraine in 1919, Ivan Pavlovich Sereda became a cook in the Red Army, assigned to the 91st Tank Regiment, 46th Tank Division. When a German tank rolls into camp it's just the cook who is left to face it. Undeterred Sereda grabs his trusty axe and goes to work on the war machine. With a mixture of subterfuge and using what he had to hand, the cook incredibly decided that the axe was the right anti tank weapon for the day, much to the shock of the Germans inside.
An amazing story of bravery, a David and Goliath story for the modern age, it's a tale of overcoming incredible odds and having fearlessness and determination win the day.

When a Ball Turret Gunner Saved His B-17
It’s May 1, 1943 and in the ball turret of his B-17 is gunner, Sergeant Maynard H. Smith. Known to the crew as Snuffy, Smith was not a tall man which was an essential requirement for a ball turret gunner.
Due to faulty equipment the B-17’s find themselves unexpectedly low over occupied France. Set upon by German guns and FW 190s, the B-17 was damaged beyond repair and on fire. 3 of the men bailed out over the English Channel. What happened next was a feat of bravery and endurance that saved the plane and the remaining crew. Tending the sick, defending the plane with the waist guns and putting out the fire at the same time, Smith showed true grit in this incredible episode of WW2. This earned him the medal of honor, but despite this, the unruly and unpopular Smith found himself demoted.

It's April 1918 and in the trenches of Northern France the Battle of the Lys, also known as the Fourth Battle of Ypres is underway. 22 year old Aníbal Augusto Milhais from the Portuguese Expeditionary corps finds himself in the midst of the battle. What happened next was an incredible display of courage and bravery that saved the lives of many of his companions both Scottish and Portuguese. After they retreated he continued fighting on alone until he ran out of ammunition. He was given a commendation which described his action as being worth a million men. After which his nickname became "Soldier Millions".

The White Lily of Stalingrad
Lidya Litvyak made history by becoming the first woman pilot to shoot down an enemy aircraft.
Also known as Lilya, she was a skilled pilot during WW2. Taking part in the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk she saw intense action in her short career. Lydia’s fame grew. Her commanding officer said of her “She was very aggressive, a born fighter pilot”. With her striking looks and fame in defending Stalingrad she was given the name, “The White Lily of Stalingrad” by her comrades. On February 1943 she was promoted to a junior lieutenant and chosen to join a group of elite pilots that were permitted to search for targets under their own initiative. These "free hunters" were made up of only the most experienced pilots. In recognition of this status she had a white lily painted on the side of her plane.
Finally she was shot down while engaging several fighters and went missing leaving a mystery that would not be solved for many years.

When a King Tiger was rammed by a Sherman
When Lieutenant John Gorman of the 5th Guards Armoured Brigade was riding on board the Ballyragget, near the village of Cagny in Northern France, he was confronted by a group of German tanks including the feared Tiger 1 and the King Tiger. He would later write in his book about the encounter, “It was horror personified.”
Determined to take down the King Tiger but knowing that the gun of his Sherman is near useless against it, Gorman turned to his driver and ordered “Ram it!”

German Spook that Shot from Below
Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer was an incredibly successful night fighter with 121 victories, mostly against British four engined planes. Using a technological innovation of 20mm cannons on his Bf 110, mounted near vertically like organ pipes enabled him to shoot Allied craft from below.
The noise the cannons made sounded like Jazz drums to the German pilots and they nicknamed it Schraege Music. It was the sound of disaster for the allied crews and they nicknamed Schnaufer the Spook of St Trond.

Tirpitz vs Tallboy
Wing Commander Tait’s briefing before the raid was short. The objective was the same as before, target and sink the Tirpitz.
Operation Catechism was an RAF air raid with specially adapted Lancaster bombers of the RAF’s elite 617 and 9 Squadrons attacked Tirpitz in a remote fjord in Norway, it resulted in the final destruction of the fearsome German battleship Tirpitz.
Tallboys released, from 14,000 feet accelerated to 750 mph approaching the speed of sound. Minutes later the Tirpitz – pride of the Kriegsmarine was no longer.

6 Hours in Hell - Roy Benavidez
1968 in Vietnam and Master Sergeant Roy Benevidez undertook an incredibly brave rescue of a special forces team that had been surrounded by an NVA Infantry Battalion of over 1000 men. Armed with just a knife and his medical bag, Benevidez threw himself into the thick of the action and conducted a rescue attempt that resulted in him saving the lives of at least 8 men.
When presented the Medal of Honor by President Reagan, the President turned to the press and said, "If the story of his heroism were a movie script, you would not believe it".

When a Beaufighter Attacked Paris With French Flags
Operation Squabble was the RAF's daring plan to lift the spirits of the French and strike back against the Germans. This adventurous raid conducted by 2 brave aviators in a lone Bristol Beaufighter humiliated the Germans at a time when things were looking bleak in Europe.

When Germans, Americans and French Fought on the Same Side
Castle Itter in Austria was the setting of one of the strangest battles of WW2, where an unlikely group fought together to stop the SS from terminating French VIP's.
The book, “The Last Battle” by Stephen Harding accurately lays out the details of this incredible battle where The Americans, The French, The Wehrmacht and an SS Officer fought together to defend the lives of French VIPs. Any errors or omissions in the story are entirely our own.

Flying Tigers
The Flying Tigers. First rate American pilots who in search of adventure went to help the Chinese break Japanese air superiority. Under the command of Claire Lee Chennault they were one of the first to strike back against Japan after the attack at Pearl Harbor. On Christmas day 1941 Bill Reed took part in a major battle that was to mark the change of tide in the domination of the air over Burma and China.
To hear more of Major General Fred Chiao's story you can see an interview with him here — https://www.witnesstowar.org/combat_stories/WWII/4475
Also to find out more about this incident and others, the book The Flying Tigers by Sam Kleiner is an excellent read.

An essential mission to capture 2 bridges in France was undertaken on the night before D-Day. Essential to protect the flank of Sword beach, it was a daring raid. Unable to come in by parachute as they were too slow, the men were delivered by Horsa gliders.

Mini Subs vs Tirpitz
Conceived in part by Winston Churchill, Operation Source was a daring plan to take out several German ships including the infamous Tirpitz that were positioned in Fjords in Norway. Mini submarines or X-Craft were used to deposit charges nearby the hull. This incredibly brave tactic was a David vs Goliath battle was one that put the Tirpitz out of action for 6 months but it also came at great cost to the men involved in the mission.

The Char B1 that Destroyed a Panzer Company
The French defense against the German Blitzkrieg usually gets told one way. However there were pockets of resistance where the French fought tough successful battles against the German invaders. One of the stand out battles is that of the Char B1 bis called Eure. Alone, stood up to and destroyed an entire Panzer company in the village of Stonne.

When a BF-109 Sliced Through a B-17
The All American, high over the skies of Tunisia was practically split in two by a BF-109. A testament to the ruggedness of these birds was that this one kept flying and got all the crew back safely to Biskra air base. Over the years many versions of this story have been embellished with the mistruths. We tried to stick to the facts for this one, leaving out embellishments such as the lashing together of parachutes to keep the tail on and falsehoods such as landing in England over 2000 miles away! We think it's an amazing story with just the facts.

A Giant with a Volcanic Temper — the Only Man Awarded the VC on D-Day
Storming the D-Day beach, Hollis didn’t take cover. Instead, in a moment of extreme courage, he stood up and ran zigzagging towards the German bunker with his gun blazing, slapping in a new magazine as he reached the enemy and silenced the threat, he then moved on to the second bun-ker taking 25 Germans prisoner. Sergeant Stanley Hollis continued to storm into action throughout the day. For displaying the utmost gallantry, he was the only man to be awarded the Victoria Cross on D-Day, an incredible feat.

When Tourist Boats Attacked the Royal Navy
The Italian Navy conducted a daring attack in Souda Bay, Crete to take out the British Royal Navy ships anchored there. Using a design from the Italian Black Prince, called "modified tourist boats" the attack was a true battle of David vs Goliath with the little ships going up against the might of the British Navy. An incredibly brave story that deserves telling.

Erich Hartmann the World's Greatest Flying Ace
Despite his cavalier attitude and lack of discipline, Hartmann’s training officers realized that he was an immensely talented pilot, and tolerated his behaviour.
He flew more than 1,400 missions enabling him to score an astonishing 352 victories.
Hartmann’s reputation had grown so immense that when many Soviet pilots saw the notorious Messerschmitt Bf 109 approaching they would turn tail and head home.
This flying menace had to be stopped, but no one ever did. Erich Hartmann's record will never be broken.
