The total solar eclipse that swept across Mexico, the United States and Canada has completed its journey over continental North America.
Last to see the dramatic celestial spectacle were sky-gazers located along the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. local time 3:46 p.m. ET
Mazatlan, on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, became the first city to experience totality earlier on Monday. The total eclipse then darkened the skies over Texas, where spectators caught glimpses of stunning views, despite cloudy weather. Next up were the cities and towns in the midwestern US, with Indianapolis and Cleveland among the places viewers experienced the thrill of the celestial event.
Those squarely along the center line of the path of totality saw an eclipse that lasted between 3 ½ and 4 minutes, according to NASA.
In the US, an estimated 32 million people live within the path of totality and a total solar eclipse was visible for those in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, although weather threatened to spoil the fun for some.
Only a few isolated clouds were expected in Vermont through Maine, as well as Missouri through southern Indiana, making for optimal eclipse viewing. However, much of Texas and the eastern Great Lakes were issued warnings for less than ideal weather. A partial solar eclipse, where the moon appears to take a crescent-shaped “bite” out of the sun, was visible for those outside the path of totality.
One eclipse viewer, Richard Canedo, who has been a Planetary Society member since 1981, used the cloudy skies in Fredericksburg, Texas, to his advantage — he used the overcast conditions as a makeshift filter to capture the moment of total eclipse on his handheld camera.
As the fully eclipsed sun peeked through clouds in Fredericksburg, Texas, more than four minutes of total darkness was observed by the crowd of hundreds gathered that let out loud cheers and cries of, “Oh my God!”
At one point, the stunning, blazing ring visible during totality even showed off what Planetary Society CEO Bill Nye called a possible prominence.
“It’s magical everyone,” said Nye from the Texas outdoor stage event. “I am just so happy to be sharing this with you all.”
A crowd of thousands also gathered at the only NASA facility that was within the eclipse’s path of totality: NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, US Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves, NASA astronaut Steve Bowen, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Josh Dobbs and even Snoopy made an appearance, all outfitted in eclipse glasses.
Special eclipse moments:
While totality is considered to be the most exciting part of a total solar eclipse, there were other special phases to watch for before the big moment arrived.
While totality is considered to be the most exciting part of a total solar eclipse, there were other special phases to watch for before the big moment arrived.
Apart from the weeks and months of anticipation leading up to the eclipse, the longest phase of the event was the partial eclipse, as the moon slowly moved over the sun. This phase lasted from 70 to 80 minutes.
But a great cue for spectators was when the skies started to darken and turn an eerie gray color, about 15 to 20 minutes before totality.
Then, several phases happened in quick succession just before the sun’s light completely disappeared from view.

Sky-gazers observed drops of sunlight forming around the moon, known as Baily’s beads, as sunlight streamed over the craters and valleys of the lunar surface. After about 30 seconds to a minute, some of those drops appeared to merge together, creating a glistening “diamond ring” effect about a minute before totality.
During totality, the luminous glow belonging to the sun’s corona, or hot outer atmosphere, and its faint light is only visible when the sun’s ultrabright surface is blocked.
While totality is the main event, a few dots of light were also visible in the sky near the eclipse, belonging to Jupiter, Venus, Mars and the faint light from Saturn.
When will the next eclipse occur?
It’s a bit of a wait for the next celestial spectacle like this in the United States.
Those living in Alaska will catch a glimpse of a total solar eclipse on March 30, 2033, and a partial solar eclipse will shine over most of the US during that event.
A total solar eclipse won’t be visible again from the contiguous US until August 22, 2044, but totality will only occur over North Dakota and Montana, plus northern Canada.
The next total solar eclipse with a coast-to-coast path spanning the Lower 48 states will occur on August 12, 2045. The path of totality will arc over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, with a partial eclipse visible across other states.

Total Eclipse vs Partial Eclipse - What's the Difference Anyway??
ECLIPSE MERCH AVAILABLE ON AMAZON: https://rebrand.ly/AmazonEclipse2024
Eclipses, those rare cosmic events, offer captivating displays of nature's grandeur. Among them, partial and total eclipses stand out, each offering unique experiences.
During a partial eclipse, the moon partially covers the sun, leading to a subtle dimming of sunlight. It's a reminder of the celestial ballet unfolding above us, showcasing the harmonious interplay of celestial bodies.
In contrast, a total eclipse is unparalleled. As the moon perfectly aligns between the Earth and the sun, it casts a shadow, known as the umbra, onto the Earth's surface. Lucky viewers within this shadow experience totality, witnessing the sun completely obscured by the moon. During this brief but breathtaking moment, the sky darkens to twilight hues, revealing stars and planets usually hidden by the sun's brilliance. Birds may roost, temperatures drop, and an otherworldly stillness envelops the landscape.
The upcoming April 8th, 2024 total eclipse promises to be exceptional. It will traverse a path across North America, offering millions the opportunity to witness totality. Cities like Dallas, Indianapolis, and Buffalo will experience complete obscuration of the sun, providing a rare opportunity for residents and travelers alike. Furthermore, advancements in technology and social media mean that this eclipse will be more accessible and widely observed than ever before.
While both partial and total eclipses offer glimpses into the cosmic dance, the experience of totality is incomparable. As we anticipate the April 8th, 2024 eclipse, let us marvel at the wonder of the universe and appreciate the rare moments that unite us under the same vast sky.

Solar Eclipse News: Eastern Ontario Canada Prepares for Crowds on April 8th 2024
CANADA ECLIPSE MERCH AVAILABLE ON AMAZON: https://rebrand.ly/ProvincesOfCanadaEclipse2024
A small part of Eastern Ontario is within the path of totality of the April 8 solar eclipse, and the county government in the affected area is preparing for crowds that day.
Roughly the southern half of the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry is within the path of the total solar eclipse, which will sweep northeasterly across North America from Mexico to Newfoundland that day. Total eclipses occur when the Moon completely covers the face of the Sun. To see it, people must be somewhere within the narrow path of totality.
SDG will be among the only places in Ontario to experience totality during the eclipse. The northern limit of the path of totality roughly follows the boundaries between North and South Glengarry, North and South Stormont, and North and South Dundas.
At 3:24:40 p.m. on April 8, the area within the path of totality will experience complete darkness for two minutes and 15 seconds. Areas north of the path of totality will experience partial darkness throughout the day.
Due to SDG’s location, significant tourist traffic is expected on April 8 and Counties officials are planning for it. Ottawa, Toronto, and half of Montréal are just north of the path of totality, meaning eclipse enthusiasts in those big cities will likely be traveling to places where they can experience the full effects of the phenomenon.
At the February 20 meeting of SDG Counties council, Corporate Communications Coordinator Todd Lihou said the Raisin Region Conservation Authority had not scheduled any official eclipse events for its conservation areas.
The St. Lawrence Parks Commission is planning a viewing event at Crysler Farm Battlefield Park beside Upper Canada Village near Morrisburg. The commission, an agency of the Ontario government, has purchased 10,000 pairs of eclipse glasses for visitors to use so they may view the sun safely. The event takes place from 1 - 4:30 p.m. on April 8. Fees for parking and miniature train rides will apply. The commission is also planning to open the Long Sault Parkway scenic route between Ingleside and Long Sault to offer more viewing locations.
South Dundas Mayor Jason Broad said the municipality has been planning for the extra traffic on April 8. Crysler Farm Battlefield is located in South Dundas.
“We do expect a large influx of people,” Broad remarked.
He said all municipal staff will be involved in the effort to manage traffic and trash on eclipse day. Broad said the municipality is working with local employers on adjusting starting and quitting times so employees can easily get to work and home again. He said he is concerned about traffic stopping on highways 401 and 2 to view the eclipse. He has also requested SDG road staff be available to assist South Dundas staff if necessary.
SDG Training and Emergency Management Coordinator Katherine Beehler said the counties are part of a provincial working group composed of affected municipalities and provincial government departments within the path of totality across Ontario. Beehler said discussions have taken place with telephone companies about how extra tourist traffic could strain mobile phone service and 911 emergency services.
Beehler said SDG is also coordinating possible traffic concerns with the City of Ottawa, which borders SDG to the northwest. Her advice to residents within the path of totality is to watch it from their backyards to avoid the expected traffic. “If you live in SDG Counties, the best view is at home,” Beehler said.
Out of concern for children's safety, all school boards in Eastern Ontario have canceled classes on April 8 and designated it a professional development day for teachers.

Eclipse Chasers Flock to Mexico for Longest Time of Totality in North America on April 8th 2024
MEXICO ECLIPSE MERCH AVAILABLE ON AMAZON: https://rebrand.ly/MexicoEclipse2024
Paul Maley grew up in Texas at the height of the Space Age of the 1960s, often looking skyward. He was mesmerized by solar eclipses, including one he photographed as a young teen, its image projected on a lawn chair.
Over the years, an interest in eclipses took him far beyond any Texas backyard.
Today, the 76-year-old is among America’s most prolific eclipse chasers. He has followed them across the globe in 42 countries including Indonesia, Peru, Turkey and Saudi Arabia – taking him to remote villages, sandy deserts and even the icy shores of Antarctica.
On April 8, the retired NASA contractor aims to notch his 84th eclipse – and 30th total eclipse – while floating in the Pacific Ocean on a ship somewhere west of Mazatlan, Mexico.
“I look at every solar eclipse that I can possibly get to,” he said.
For die-hard eclipse chasers, the Holy Grail is a total eclipse – and in the path of totality, this year’s best destination is in central and western Mexico. That’s because the area around Mazatlan, Durango and Torreon provides the likeliest chance of clear skies and the longest period of darkness before the shadow arcs northeast through 13 U.S. states, from Texas to Maine, its shadow sweeping across the land at 1,500 mph.

Eclipse News: State of Emergency in Niagara Falls Region 1 Million Visitors Expected April 8th 2024
NIAGARA FALLS ECLIPSE MERCH ON AMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Niagara+Falls+Eclipse+Gear+SLW+04%2F08%2F24+MW&s=price-asc-rank&qid=1712163523&ref=sr_st_price-asc-rank&ds=v1%3APOPsFx5lUaQ4282qyPLj6eZabUiB2pL6pbTnhwNuP%2FU
Officials in the Niagara Region say they’re hoping for the best but preparing for the worst after taking the unprecedented step of proactively declaring a state of emergency ahead of the solar eclipse on April 8, which officials think could bring up to a million people to the Southern Ontario tourism hub.
Anticipating traffic jams and possible fuel shortages and telecommunication outages, Jim Bradley, the chair of the regional government, invoked the emergency measure on Friday, more than a week before the event.
“When you have a million people coming to an area, something can happen,” Mr. Bradley said in an interview. “And so out of an abundance of caution, we want to make sure we have that declaration and the available staff and resources to be able to deal with any eventuality.”
Declarations of emergency under Ontario’s Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act are usually reserved for natural disasters, such as floods, fires and severe snowstorms. They give regional governments and municipalities access to additional provincial resources and funds, and allow them to bring in extra staff.
Officials expect hundreds of thousands of visitors to flock to the region to catch a glimpse of the rare celestial event. Niagara Falls and the surrounding communities are squarely in the path of the eclipse, and will experience around 3½ minutes of total eclipse on the afternoon of April 8.
Jim Diodati, the mayor of Niagara Falls, said the most visitors the city has seen in a single day is around 150,000, when American acrobat Nik Wallenda tight-rope walked across the waterfall in 2012.
“This will be eight to nine times that number, especially depending on the weather,” Mr. Diodati said.
“For traffic, the volume will be enormous,” he added. “It will be very difficult to get a fire truck or an ambulance or a police car. So we’re going to try to proactively position them in strategic locations that are accessible. We’ll have medical stations, porta-potties. We’re trying to think of everything.”
The city is also bringing in mobile cellphone towers to handle the increased demand for bandwidth.
The regional government, which includes Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Welland and a number of smaller cities, has asked the province’s helicopter ambulance service to be on alert. Some public facilities will be closed on the day and staff may be reassigned to deal with traffic, parking and other issues, Mr. Bradley said.
The Go Transit rail system will be running additional trains to and from Toronto, to meet increased demand and reduce traffic congestion on the Queen Elizabeth Way highway, which runs south from the GTA.
Nirupama Agrawal, a professor of Disaster and Emergency Management at York University, said she has never seen a pre-emptive declaration of emergency before. But she said that the unique circumstance justifies taking this step.
“If this event was happening in Toronto, it has resources available to it,” Prof. Agrawal said. “Niagara will have to ask Toronto to help, so why not ask in advance?”
She said that emergency-response professionals are increasingly emphasizing risk management and prevention, in an environment where policing, ambulance and fire services are stretched thin.
In this context, pre-emptive declarations of emergency may become more common, she said, although there are risks if these proliferate without specific guidelines and protocols.
“They have to be done in good faith. It cannot be a municipality declaring an emergency, and it turns out it was only to access extra resources,” she said.
While Niagara’s declaration of emergency has highlighted risks ahead of April 8, Mr. Diodati said the event is also a tremendous opportunity for the tourism region, which is still recovering from the pandemic.
“It’s getting us the exposure we could never afford to pay for. And we’re grateful for it. I mean, the world brought us COVID, and now the universe brings us a total solar eclipse.”

Granite Staters will have the opportunity to experience an extremely rare event when the path of a total solar eclipse crosses through the northern part of the state on April 8.
Here is everything you need to know to get ready for the total solar eclipse.
In New Hampshire, only the far northern part of the state will be in the path of totality, including the communities of Pittsburg, Errol, Colebrook, Stewartstown and Lancaster.
Areas south of the path of totality will see a partial eclipse, meaning there will be a small sliver of the sun still visible, and the sky won't go dark. Many people are going to travel to the area of totality, but the partial eclipse will still be a sight to see, too, with the proper eyewear.

An estimated 250,000 people are expected to travel to Erie to experience the path of totality for the solar eclipse next month.
Law enforcement and businesses are already preparing for the big day.
"Everybody is getting excited," Pennsylvania State Police Troop E Commander Capt. Kirk Reese said. "We are getting phone calls and inquiries from across the entire nation."
Reese said troopers are ready for the solar eclipse on April 8. Erie is one of the spots in the path of totality with the best view. State police said they are preparing for up to 250,000 visitors.
"We are going to try to put cars everywhere possible on the roadways," Reese said. "And not only interstates because we know as soon as the interstates get jammed, everybody's electronic device will send them to a secondary roadway."
"We are enlisting the help of our aviation assets and, of course, the PSP boat will be out on Lake Erie for all the boaters," he added.
Reese of Troop E, which covers Erie, Crawford, Venango and Warren counties, said all troopers will be working and bracing for traffic trouble everywhere, including the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Interstate 79.
"They are going to be coming across the Turnpike, up (Interstate) 79, and the roads are going to be busy Friday, Saturday and Sunday. But the roads will be overwhelmed when the eclipse ends Monday afternoon," Reese said.
He said travel times could take up to four times longer than usual. After the last solar eclipse in 2017, highways were paralyzed.
"In 2017, the path of totality went across the United States and it affected Tennessee and Kentucky. And my operations chief and I have been dealing with those state police agencies, and they said they had a backlog, parking lots on most of their interstates to up to 10 to 12 hours after the eclipse ended," Reese said.
Reese said he's aware that drivers may stop on the roadways to watch. But he said that is illegal and dangerous.
"We are fearful that some people will stop on the roadway," Reese said. "So, we have been working hand-in-hand with PennDOT and other agencies. They are putting up signs along the roadways saying do not stop on the roadway. We have troopers stationed throughout all the interstates trying to move traffic along."
He expects people will start arriving on April 5. Police said to plan your route now and be prepared.
"It's going to come down to the individual driver and hopefully just a little common sense," he said.
Reese says he expects the biggest crowds to be at Presque Isle State Park, Erie, and every location on Lake Erie.

Eclipse News: Ohio: Stock Up On Food, Water, Fuel Before Eclipse Hits on April 8th 2024
OHIO ECLIPSE MERCH AVAILABLE ON AMAZON: https://rebrand.ly/OhioEclipse2024
Lorain County Emergency Management (EMA) in Ohio have issued a warning to eclipse watchers and locals to the path of totality to stock up on food, water, and fuel ahead of the total eclipse on April 8, with an influx of visitors to the area expected
The last total solar eclipse over the US was pretty spectacular, as anyone who saw it will attest. Looking at the photos, it's hard to imagine how the sight could have been improved upon in the eclipse taking place next month.
But if we are lucky and the weather is fine, we could be in for something special, as the eclipse coincides with the solar maximum.
"In 2017, the Sun was nearing solar minimum. Viewers of the total eclipse could see the breathtaking corona – but since the Sun was quiet, streamers flowing into the solar atmosphere were restricted to just the equatorial regions of the star. The Sun is more magnetically symmetrical during solar minimum, causing this simpler appearance," NASA explains.
"During the 2024 eclipse, the Sun will be in or near solar maximum, when the magnetic field is more like a tangled hairball. Streamers will likely be visible throughout the corona. In addition to that, viewers will have a better chance to see prominences – which appear as bright, pink curls or loops coming off the Sun."
The eclipse should be visible from Mexico to Canada. The path of totality – the area where people will see a total solar eclipse – is wider than in 2017 too, as the Moon is closer to Earth due to where it is in its orbit, meaning more people will see the Sun's corona.
"With lucky timing, there could even be a chance to see a coronal mass ejection – a large eruption of solar material – during the eclipse," NASA added.
As always with eclipses though, there are safety concerns. Last time, there was a concerning spike in Google searches related to what happens if you look directly at the Sun, shortly after the eclipse took place.
There are logistical problems too in the form of a huge influx of tourists hoping to see the celestial event, which areas along the path of totality are currently getting ready for. Lorain County officials, for example, have put out a warning that as people arrive ahead of the eclipse there could be increased traffic, increased wait time for services such as hospitals and gas stations, as well as difficulty accessing food and other supplies.
“What we could have is crowds here that we’re not used to,” said Dave Freeman, Lorain County EMA director, in a statement seen by USA Today. “We’re not set up infrastructure-wise for that, we don’t have the roads.”
“A lot of the roads here are two lanes,” Freeman added, per Yahoo News. “This is not Chicago, this is not Cleveland, where we have a bunch of four-lane, six-lane roads coming in so the traffic could be pretty extreme here if we get crowds more than we expect."
The EMA is also warning that cell phone signal could be lost due to the increase in cell phone activity in the area overloading the system. The team is warning residents that in the weekend ahead of the eclipse, they should fill their vehicles with gas, stock up on food, and avoid other travel where possible.

As anticipation builds for the forthcoming total solar eclipse, Illinois, particularly Southern Illinois, emerges as a prime destination to witness this celestial spectacle. Scheduled for April 8, this eclipse marks the final opportunity to behold such an event for the next two decades, making it a momentous occasion for both residents and visitors alike.
Governor J.B. Pritzker has voiced enthusiasm for the event, emphasizing the state's commitment to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees. Recognizing the economic boost this phenomenon brings, efforts are underway to support local businesses and accommodate the influx of tourists expected to flock to the region.
Daniel Thomas, Deputy Director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Office of Tourism, highlights the eclipse as an opportunity to showcase the natural splendor of Southern Illinois. Encouraging early arrival, visitors are urged to take advantage of the plethora of activities available in the area, from outdoor adventures like hiking and rock climbing to embracing the tranquility of the surroundings.
However, with the excitement also comes a need for caution. Transportation officials are issuing warnings about potential traffic congestion, advising travelers to plan accordingly and exercise vigilance on the roads. Safety precautions include refraining from stopping along roads or bridges, avoiding parking in hazardous locations, and remaining alert for pedestrians and fellow eclipse enthusiasts.
To facilitate a smooth experience for all, a strategic approach to travel is advised, with early arrival, prolonged stay, and delayed departure suggested to alleviate congestion and ensure everyone's safety.
Cities along the path of totality, such as Carbondale, Makanda, and Fairfield, are gearing up to welcome visitors and provide optimal viewing conditions for this rare event. With meticulous planning and cooperation, Southern Illinois is poised to offer an unforgettable experience for eclipse enthusiasts from near and far.

In southeast Missouri, a total solar eclipse is set to grace the skies this spring, with its path of totality spanning the region.
For those considering witnessing this celestial event firsthand within the path or catching a glimpse of the partial eclipse from elsewhere, here's a guide to prepare for the solar spectacle on April 8, 2024.
How and Where to Witness the Total Solar Eclipse in Southeast Missouri
According to NASA, Poplar Bluff is anticipated to be the prime spot in Missouri for observing the total solar eclipse, slated for 2 p.m. on April 8th. The community, along with others along the path, is gearing up for celebratory viewing gatherings.
Partial Eclipse for Springfield and Beyond
While Springfield, along with most of the U.S., won't be in the direct path of totality, it will still offer a partial solar eclipse around 1:54 p.m. on Monday, April 8th. Here's what to anticipate.
Traffic Woes Anticipated in Popular Eclipse Viewing Spots
Expect congestion on roads, particularly in areas along the center of the eclipse's trajectory, as eager viewers flock to cities, towns, and remote locales for optimal vantage points. Many of these areas lack the infrastructure to accommodate large crowds, potentially leading to extended travel times.

On April 8th, 2024, a Total Solar Eclipse will be visible across parts of North America. It's when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, temporarily blocking sunlight. For those in its path, daylight will turn into darkness for a few minutes. It's a rare natural spectacle that brings people together to witness the wonders of the universe.
Many Trump supporters eagerly anticipate the possibility of his return to the presidency. During his previous term, Trump focused on issues like the economy, national security, and conservative values. For his supporters, he represents a departure from traditional politics and a voice for their concerns.
As the 2024 election approaches, discussions about Trump's candidacy intensify. His supporters hope for another chance to advance their priorities and beliefs through his leadership.
As we look ahead to 2024, we recognize the significance of both the Total Solar Eclipse and the potential for Trump's reelection. These events reflect our shared experiences and aspirations as a nation.

Travelers will want to find an area with clear weather within the 115-mile-wide path of totality. Here's what to know.
Travelers will want to find an area with clear weather within the 115-mile-wide path of totality, "Standing anywhere else is useless, you have to be in that zone," said eclipse chaser David Makepeace, also known as the Eclipse Guy. "That's what makes it special."
The eclipse's path will cross 13 states from Texas to Maine, and experts say the southern end of the path has the best chances for good viewing. Texas' typically sunny weather, major cities ready for tourists and location under the path all combine to make it an easy recommendation for people willing to travel.

Eclipse News: Delta offering flight along Path of Totality on 04/08/24 for Solar Eclipse Viewing
ECLIPSE MERCH AVAILABLE ON AMAZON: https://rebrand.ly/AmazonEclipse2024
North America will experience its last total solar eclipse for 20 years in April, and now some skywatchers will have a front-row view.
Delta Airlines announced its chartering a flight from Austin, Texas, to Detroit on April 8 that is specifically intended for passengers to have an up-close view of the solar eclipse along the path of totality -- the specific locations on Earth that fall in the center of the moon's shadow during an eclipse.
The flight is scheduled to depart from Austin at 12:15 p.m. CT and arrive in Detroit at 4:20 p.m. ET. It's timed "to give those on board the best chance of safely viewing the solar eclipse at its peak," Delta said in a press release on Monday. The one-way flight is $1,129 and can be purchased through the Delta website.
"The April 8 eclipse is the last total eclipse we'll see over North America until 2044," Warren Weston, Delta Air Lines lead meteorologist, said in the press release. "This eclipse will last more than twice as long as the one that occurred in 2017, and the path is nearly twice as wide."
Delta says passengers will have "premium viewing" due to the A200-300 aircraft's extra-large windows.
In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.
Passengers aboard preexisting flights on April 8 will also have the chance to view the total solar eclipse, and Delta encourages those individuals to come prepared with solar eclipse viewing glasses.

Eclipse News: Niagara Falls Expecting One MIllion Visitors on April 8th 2024 to View Solar Eclipse
NIAGARA FALLS ECLIPSE MERCH ON AMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Niagara+Falls+Eclipse+Gear+SLW+04%2F08%2F24+MW&ref=bl_dp_s_web_0
Call it a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see two natural wonders at once.
Niagara Falls is getting widespread praise as a prime destination for viewing the total solar eclipse, and Canadian and American civic leaders are bracing for hundreds of thousands of visitors on April 8.
The mayor of Niagara Falls, Ont., said he expects to host the largest crowd in the city’s history for a single event.
“Ever,” Mayor Jim Diodati said in an interview. “By far. By far.”
Eclipse chasers and other travelers have snapped up hotel rooms in and around the Falls.
Governments in Ontario and New York have scheduled special activities for the days leading up to the eclipse. Schools on both sides of the border have decided to close that day to avoid getting caught in the crowds.
And businesses are getting in on the action, too, with everything from a restaurant’s celestial-themed menu to a skydiving trip over the Falls perfectly timed with the totality.
“We know the hotel rooms are already booked,” said Janice Thomson, president and CEO of Niagara Falls Tourism in Ontario. “And we know that the attractions and the restaurants are all gearing up to cater to thousands and thousands of people.”
Uncommon event
Both cities of Niagara Falls are among the North American communities within a narrow band stretching from Mexico to Canada that will experience a rare total solar eclipse on April 8.
The last time this happened in the Buffalo area was 1925, and it won’t return again to our region until 2144.
National Geographic ranked watching the solar eclipse in Niagara Falls at No. 11 on its list of the top 20 travel experiences in the world for 2024 – between hiking a volcano in Panama and trekking a glacier in Chile.
And Space.com listed Niagara Falls as the most scenic spot in America from which to view the total eclipse.
“I think it’s because Niagara Falls is one of the great natural wonders of our planet. And we’re going to have at the same time, concurrently, one of the great celestial events of our lifetime,” Diodati said. “It’s two natural phenomena happening and overlapping. And I think it creates a critical mass of curiosity.”
Niagara Falls, N.Y., Mayor Robert Restaino said he’s expecting tens of thousands of visitors to crowd into the best viewing spots at Prospect Point and elsewhere in the Falls.
Huge crowd expected
Restaino and Diodati both said the crowd should be far larger than the numbers who saw Nik Wallenda cross over the Falls on a high wire in 2012, the largest event to date at the Falls. Tens of thousands on the American side, and more than 100,000 on the Canadian side, watched that evening.
Diodati said he spoke to an American documentary crew that tracks total eclipses and they said to expect eight or nine times the largest crowd Niagara Falls has ever had. That could push the numbers along both sides of the border to more than 1 million people, Diodati said.
The Ontario city is setting up a concert and other activities to keep people from trying to leave all at once upon the conclusion of the eclipse, said Diodati.
Eclipse fans welcomed
Schools in Ontario have closed for the day. Niagara Falls, N.Y., schools were set to be open on April 8, a Monday that followed the two-week spring break, but Superintendent Mark Laurrie said he’s made the decision to close to students and assign remote training to staff.
He noted the time of the totality, around 3:20 p.m., lines up with when schools dismiss and buses are on the road.
“There’s a million people coming to 16 miles of Niagara Falls. It’s going to be gridlock here,” said Laurrie, who is on the local tourism board and has heard hotel rooms are going for $600 or $700 a night for April 7 and April 8.
“We know this is once in a lifetime. We knew that we needed to do something,” Free said, noting they’ve booked guests from as far away as Japan and England. Seneca Gaming is hosting family-friendly community events outside its Niagara Falls and Salamanca properties and another party catering to adults at its Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino in Buffalo, she said.
The Maid of the Mist doesn’t yet know if conditions will allow it to open by April 8 but the company hopes it can, spokesman Kevin Keenan said.
Savor, the restaurant operated by the Niagara Falls (N.Y.) Culinary Institute, is hosting a Space Dinner on April 6 billed as a “gastronomic journey through the cosmos.”
And Sky Dive the Falls, based in Youngstown, is offering the chance to skydive before, during or after the totality.
“Make no mistake,” the company states on its website. “Niagara Falls will be a ZOO the day of the eclipse.”

Prime Viewing Locations in Mexico for the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8th 2024
MEXICO ECLIPSE MERCH AVAILABLE ON AMAZON: https://rebrand.ly/MexicoEclipse2024
The upcoming solar event on April 8, 2024, promises an awe-inspiring spectacle: a total solar eclipse visible from parts of North America, with Mexico offering some prime locations for witnessing this rare phenomenon.
The path of totality spans from northwest Mexico across the United States to southeastern Canada, stretching approximately 115 miles (185 kilometers) wide on average. Within this path, observers will have the unique opportunity to experience daytime darkness and catch a glimpse of the sun's corona—the outer layer of its atmosphere—with the naked eye for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds. This path, known as the moon's umbra, marks where the moon fully obstructs the sun's disk.
The moon's shadow will make its initial contact with Earth approximately 370 miles (600 kilometers) off the west coast of Mexico at Isla Socorro—a haven for divers seeking encounters with sharks, humpback whales, and massive manta rays—before journeying to three of the Islas Marías just 60 miles (100 km) from the mainland. Mazatlán, situated on the western coast of Mexico, will be the first mainland region to witness totality, followed by Durango, Torreón, and Monclova as the path progresses northeastward toward the U.S. border at Piedras Negras.
The moon's shadow will traverse Mexico in approximately 25 minutes, crossing through multiple time zones, with totality occurring between 11:07 a.m. MST and 1:32 p.m. CST. According to Xavier Jubier's interactive Google Map for solar eclipses, the path will measure 124 miles (199 km) wide at the Pacific Coast and 121 miles (195 km) wide at the U.S. border. Along the centerline through Mexico, totality will last between 4 minutes and 26 seconds to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.
While clear skies anywhere within the path of totality will afford viewers a chance to witness the total solar eclipse, certain locations stand out for their optimal viewing conditions. Here are some recommended spots in Mexico to observe the 2024 total solar eclipse:
Mazatlán Malecón; Mazatlán, Sinaloa
El Faro Lighthouse; Mazatlán, Sinaloa
El Quelite, Sinaloa
Victoria de Durango, Durango

Canada Total Eclipse Watchers: What You Need to Know
CANADA ECLIPSE MERCH AVAILABLE ON AMAZON: https://rebrand.ly/ProvincesOfCanadaEclipse2024
On April 8, 2024, the entirety of Canada will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, while specific regions in Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada will be privileged to witness totality.
The path of totality stretches from northwest Mexico through the United States, reaching southeastern Canada. It spans approximately 115 miles (185 kilometers) in width, offering a rare opportunity to witness daytime darkness and catch a glimpse of the sun's corona for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds with the naked eye. This path, known as the moon's umbra, creates the illusion of the moon completely obstructing the sun's disk.
Olivier Hernandez, the director of the Rio Tinto Alcan Planétarium in Montreal, emphasized the significance of this event, noting that while totality will be confined to the southern regions of Canada, everyone across the country will witness a partial eclipse—a phenomenon not seen for over three decades.
As the path of totality traverses northeastern Mexico and 15 U.S. states, it will eventually follow the Canada-U.S. border, passing over Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, where portions of Ontario and Quebec will experience totality.
However, the two largest cities in Canada, Montreal and Toronto, will have distinct experiences. Montreal, with its population of 1.6 million, will find itself split by the path's northern limit, while Toronto, with a population of 2.6 million, will narrowly miss out on totality. Ottawa also lies outside the path, necessitating travel for many Canadians to experience totality. Besides Montreal, cities like Kingston, Niagara Falls, and Hamilton in Ontario fall within the path.
For Torontonians eager to witness the event, options include traveling along the 401 east towards Lake Ontario into the path of totality or taking the 403 to Hamilton and beyond. According to Victoria Kramkowski, co-chair of the Eclipse Task Force at the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC), residents might opt for the Go regional transit system and catch a train to Burlington, which lies within the path.
While Burlington will experience around 1 minute and 30 seconds of totality, Niagara Falls will enjoy well over 3 minutes. The area between Hamilton and Niagara is expected to be bustling with activity.
Though international eclipse enthusiasts may not flock to Canada solely due to weather predictions, Canadians remain optimistic, citing a roughly 50% chance of clear skies.
The timing of the total solar eclipse across Canada indicates that the moon's shadow will traverse the country in approximately 34 minutes, with totality occurring between 3:12 p.m. EDT and 5:16 p.m. NDT. The width of the path will be 112 miles (181 km) upon entering Ontario and 100 miles (162 km) as it departs for the Atlantic Ocean at Newfoundland. Along the centerline through Canada, totality will range between 3 minutes and 31 seconds to 2 minutes and 53 seconds.
Designated spots to witness the eclipse include Point Pelee National Park and Long Point Provincial Park in Ontario, Hamilton, the Niagara Region, Kingston in Ontario, Montreal, and Parc National du Mont-Orford in Quebec.
