Fragments of Us | A Scandinavian-American Documentary about Seeking Meaning in Modernity
A Scandinavian-American visits the homeland for the first time, questioning what it is to be an American in an increasingly multi-factional country while exploring the existential challenges faced by everyday young Norwegian men looking for higher spiritual purpose and heroic meaning in an Americanized age of modernity.

My new documentary explores the ways Americans and Europeans are wrestling with the same challenge of losing existential meaning and heroic spiritual purpose in the modern world. Sharing it with those who might find the documentary valuable helps immensely. Thank you friends.
Although focused around Swedish, Norwegian, and American cultural issues, many are saying the documentary's focus on dissolution of identity, spiritual purpose, and the rise of internet subcultures and political division is profoundly relatable to people from every background.

The Bold Philosophy of Northern Courage & Ragnarök. Spengler, Nietzsche, Tolkien, Lewis, & Carlyle
Today we are exploring the philosophy of civilizational cycles, the reconciliation of Norse and Christian eschatology through Christ, and how these relate to the writings of Oswald Spengler, C.S. Lewis, Thomas Carlyle, J.R.R. Tolkien, Friedrich Nietzsche, and more to learn how we can confront Ragnarök in our age or prepare for it in the next.
This is a follow-up video to my exploration of the story and meaning of the Old Norse poem Völuspá which tells the story of Ragnarok. I recommend watching this video to better understand the characters, story, and meaning: https://youtu.be/pgPd9TggLbc

Rings of Power is a Metaphysical WEAPON: Lord of The Rings & Warhammer 40K Video Essay
This is a video essay on that explores the metaphysical, spiritual, and psychological question: How does fantasy and fiction impact the mind?
We explore the unseen spiritual and metaphysical battle taking place over the realms of fantasy and fiction. Analyzing examples from The Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40K and more, I discuss new concepts from cognitive science and philosophy such as telepresence, the noosphere, egregores, and hyperagents, while looking to the wisdom of ancient mythology, to understand the power of secondary worlds. And why are these battleground important in the philosophical war between good and evil?
I'm developing my thoughts on these subjects, so consider this video as a way of thinking through these ideas out loud as we try to understand the underlying relationships between consciousness, fiction, mythology, history, and the spiritual world.
Chapters:
00:00 🧩 Why Fiction is Incredibly Powerful
Fiction and its impact on the mind.
The significance of myths and fantasy in modern culture.
The financial value of fictional worlds in books, TV, and video games.
07:10 🎮 Immersive Experiences and Secondary Worlds
The concept of telepresence and how the mind can project itself into media and fiction.
The immersive power of quality storytelling and media.
How secondary worlds like Tolkien's Middle Earth allow the mind to inhabit them.
12:15 📚 Mythology, the Collective Unconscious, and Archetypes
Carl Jung's concept of the collective unconscious.
The nature of archetypes and the collective unconscious of cultures and peoples.
The significance of studying myths and religions to understand a culture.

19:51 🌐 The Noosphere and Hyper Agents
The idea of the noosphere as a global interconnected mind,
The influence of secondary worlds as nodes on the noosphere,
The capture and manipulation of fictional realms by corporate entities.
25:08 😈 Daemons and the Corruption of Fiction
The concept of daemons and memetics,
How daemons can hijack and parasitically invert the original purpose of fictional realms,
The use of fiction as a weapon against its original audience.
26:30 🔮 The Existence of Spiritual Beings
The existence of spiritual beings and intelligences that transcend our material understanding of the world.
Fictional universes as places where mimetics and daemons can reside.
How these entities in fictional worlds impact the who immerse themselves in fiction.
What might it mean to being possessed by divine or parasitic energies?
Contrast between possession by daemons and possession by the Holy Spirit.
30:36 📚 Warhammer 40K and The Influence of Fiction on Beliefs
How fictional universes, like Warhammer, can influence the philosophies and beliefs of their audience.
How spending time in such fictional realms can lead to the adoption of values and ideas from the characters and stories.
The risk of corruption from fictional worlds.
33:36 🌌 Fiction's Metaphysical Impact
Is fiction is filled with powerful metaphysical forces and intelligences?
Egregor, a collective consciousness shaped by shared beliefs and emotions.
Why spending extensive time in fiction has a profound effect on one's soul and mind.

00:00 🌍 The New World
The new world is a place of mystery and danger, with stories of lost ships, explorers, and vanished settlements.
Vikings led by Eric the Red first discover and establish the settlement of Leifsbudir in a bountiful land they call Markland or Vinland.
The Vikings face challenges such as wild animals, unknown beasts, witchcraft, disease, and dangerous tribes.
02:24 Leif Erickson's Expedition
Leif Erickson, inspired by his father Eric the Red, assembles a crew to venture into Vinland in the year 1000 A.D.
The perilous journey across the Atlantic Ocean is filled with unpredictable storms, the dangers of sea creatures, and the constant threat of getting lost at sea.
The Vikings finally reach Vinland, experiencing the awe of the land's abundance and natural resources.
05:10 🌲 Arriving in An Unknown World
The Vikings set up camp in Vinland, building homes and exploring the lush forests, vibrant meadows, and serene lakes.
As they establish their presence, a sense of isolation grows, accompanied by unfamiliar sounds and a feeling that something is amiss.
The promise of the land becomes clearer, but an underlying tension emerges.
06:18 New Encounters
The Vikings encounter indigenous people, described as "Skraelings," leading to initial peaceful interactions.
Successful trade and limited communication occur between the Vikings and the indigenous people.
Tensions rise, leading to a battle between the Vikings and a larger fleet of indigenous canoes.
09:36 ⚔️ Boiling Point
A fierce battle ensues between the Vikings and indigenous people, resulting in casualties on both sides.
The Vikings manage to repel the indigenous attackers, but the cost is high, marking a turning point in their perception of the new world.
Different accounts, including one in The Saga of the Greenlanders, suggest darker narratives of deception and madness.
11:02 Consequences & Alternate History
The battle highlights the precarious nature of the Vikings' presence in the new world, surrounded and outnumbered by hostile tribes.
Accounts from The Saga of the Greenlanders suggest internal conflicts and deception as factors in the downfall of Norse expeditions.
Speculation arises about what the world might have looked like if Norse expansion into North America had continued successfully.
13:54 🌍 End of the Norse Frontier
The Norse presence in North America comes to an end, and evidence of later Norse expeditions remains debated.
Imagining an alternate history where Norse dominance in North America continued raises questions about trade, conflicts, and cultural interactions.
Centuries later, descendants of Viking explorers return to North America, this time alongside Norwegians, Swedes, Germans, and English.
15:41 Legacy and Possibilities
We conclude by posing questions about hidden artifacts indicating further Viking presence and the legacy of their encounters with Native Americans.
Consideration is given to what might have transpired if Norse expansion had continued successfully in North America.

The Story of How Iceland was Settled Explained by an Icelander pt. 2
Join Fjolnir and I for part 2 as we explore the story of Ingólfur Arnarsson and the earliest days of life and fighting in the harsh wilderness of Iceland...
00:00 📚 The video explores the settlement era of Iceland, focusing on the life of Ingólfur Arnarsson.
04:31 🏞️ Fjolnir presents part two of the presentation, delving into the story of Ingólfur Arnarsson's settlement, backed by detailed visuals and locations.
09:21 💔 The concept of "Fóstbræður" is explained, a special Old Norse concept akin to a sworn oath of brotherhood.
25:09 ⚔️ Arnarson gains the nickname "Hjörleifr" after acquiring a sword in Ireland during Viking raids, showcasing how nicknames in sagas often stem from specific events.
31:44 🚤 Viking settlers believed their journey to Iceland was approved by the gods through an oracle's guidance.
37:18 🌊 Viking settlers likely used a ship called "knarr" for colonization, designed for transporting families, livestock, and possessions.
41:54 🗺️ Viking settler Ingólfr Arnarsson used a unique ritual involving wooden poles to determine where to settle in Iceland.
47:30 🚜 Vikings settled in elevated places near the sea for defense, possibly considering protection from waves and enemies.
57:15 😢 Ingólfr Arnarsson's reaction to the betrayal and murder of his sworn brother, Hjörleifr, reflects a powerful and emotional moment in the saga.
01:03:02 🕊️ In Norse sagas, worshiping the gods was emphasized, and neglecting it was believed to lead to a dishonorable fate.
01:06:28 ⚔️ Ingólfur Arnarsson, an early settler in Iceland, faced a betrayal from slaves or servants, leading to their tragic end on a rock.
01:11:46 🙏 Sacrifices to the gods and honoring traditions were considered crucial.
01:27:36 🏞️ Ingólfur Arnarsson's journey culminated in settling in Reykjavik, marked by unique landmarks like Reykjavik's geothermal hot springs and the Ax River.
01:34:20 🏛️ Excavations in Reykjavik reveal Iceland's rich history, with constant discoveries beneath the ground, showcasing the evolution of settlement farms.
01:35:59 🌍 The Marshall Plan played a role in Iceland's industrialization after World War II, impacting Reykjavik's transformation into a proper town.
01:38:19 🏠 Settlement houses evolved from small structures to larger, more sophisticated turf houses, showcasing ingenuity in adapting to the harsh environment.
01:39:06 👑 Ingólfur Arnarsson, a prominent settler, is considered the father of Iceland, and his descendants played significant roles in Icelandic governance and Christianization.

How Iceland was Settled: Ketill Flatnefur, Björn hinn Austræni and Þórólfur Mostraskegg Pt. 3
Join us today for part 3 of the Origins of Iceland series as we discuss the key characters and events that transformed Iceland from an uncharted wilderness beyond the farthest maps, to one of the most remarkable nations in the world.
00:00 Bjorn Buna from Norway, played a key role in Iceland's settlement, representing the upper middle class.
07:29 🏞️ Ketill Flatnefur, a renowned figure in Icelandic sagas, had contradictory portrayals, highlighting challenges in interpreting historical accounts.
19:57 ⚔️ Ketill's exile to Iceland differed in various sagas, showcasing discrepancies and challenges in reconstructing historical events.
25:17 🌍 Ketill's conquest of the Hebrides and subsequent events illustrate the complex relationships and power dynamics of the Viking Age.
29:13 🏝️ Þórólfur Mostraskegg, a significant chieftain in the saga, maintained a temple to Thor, showcasing the cultural and religious aspects of Viking society.
32:01 📜 Fjolnir reads and discusses an ancient text describing a pagan ritual known as "bloat," involving sacrifice and feasting.
35:03 🚢 An oracle is consulted before sailing to Iceland, emphasizing the cultural significance of oracles in pagan rituals.
38:35 🗺️ Thorkel sailed to Iceland, following a traditional route along the southern coast, using totems to determine the location for settlement.
45:14 🛠️ Upon arrival, Sorrel declared his intention to settle in Iceland, performed a ritual with totems, and built a temple near Hofsvatn.
52:28 🏛️ Detailed descriptions of the pagan temple's structure, including altars, rings, and stone cups used in rituals, challenge stereotypes about pagan practices.
01:04:08 🌌 Sacrificial rituals in ancient societies, such as Rome and pre-Christian Iceland, were often driven by a literal belief in the gods' direct influence on events like harvests and battles.
01:11:20 🛐 Christianity, as described by figures like Saint Augustine, brought a more personal and direct concept of God, contrasting with the impersonal force seen in some earlier philosophies.
01:13:40 🏛️ Hofstaðir, a Viking settlement in Iceland from 940 to 1070 A.D., was initially considered a temple site but recent excavations suggest it was primarily a chief settlement with a great hall used for rituals and feasting.
01:21:33 🐄 Ritual slaughter of cattle skulls with unusual butchering marks found at Hofstaðir indicates possible religious practices associated with the Viking settlement.
01:26:06 🛠️ The Temple at Trondheim in Norway reveals evidence of pre-Christian cult sites with large halls and smaller attached buildings, suggesting a shift in temple construction methods over time.
01:34:06 🏔️ Þórólfur (Thorolfr), a key figure in Iceland's history, declared a mountain sacred and envisioned it as a holy burial site for himself and his kin.
01:35:07 💉 The area around the sacred mountain was so holy that spilling blood was prohibited, leading to conflicts between clans.
01:37:28 ⛰️ Due to desecration, the sacred site had to be moved, and a rock at the center became a focal point for meetings, revealing potential human sacrifice in Norse culture.
01:40:15 🔄 Contradictions exist in Björn's journey to Iceland, involving conversion to Christianity and conflicts with his kindred.
01:51:18 🌍 The settlement of Iceland involved a variety of characters, including Ketill Flatnefur's son, Haki, who settled in the East, and Þórólfur's descendant who married an Irish princess, connecting Iceland to Irish nobility.
02:10:28 🪦 Forseti's death led to a significant inheritance and burial at Hofsnes, showcasing the pride of the king of Katla's descendants.
02:11:20 📜 The saga includes a peculiar story about a seal appearing in a hall, resisting blows, and creating a sense of foreboding.
02:14:47 🦭 Seals are associated with the supernatural, shape-shifting, and folktales involving interactions with the devil.
02:18:21 ⛪ The saga reflects elements of cleanliness, sacred areas, and rituals, raising questions about the influence of paganism and Christian doctrine in storytelling.
