House Build - 2 YEARS in 37 MINUTES
This is a start-to-finish video of our house build from 2021-2023. Two years in the making while still living in a homemade 20 m2 sauna house with my wife and kid. This has been a rough emotional and financial journey but it was worth it in the end. In this video you see all the steps that are required to build a house. Starting from tearing down an old house (if it's in the way of course - our dear friend @AFHProjects helped us out with the demolition) and preparing the land for the foundation. In our case the old slightly rotten log house had stone "foundation" which just means a heap of huge rocks and dirt. I managed to clear most of the dirt and rocks with the trusty JCB backhoe. However, the contractor brought a proper excavator to clear the lot for the foundation footing. The foundation was made of concrete blocks and insulated both inside and outside. Backfill was 300 tons of compacted sand. The floor slab is insulated in every way and has radiant heating. Radiant floor heating is powered by geothermal heat pump. This basically means a super efficient way of heating up the water with electricity for both the water boiler and heating the house during the winter. When living in the countryside there definitely has to be a wood stove in our opinion. So we also got an efficient fireplace/wood stove that has electronically controlled burn cycle. If there is no electricity the valves stay open so it can be used anyway. The wooden framed walls were pre-made in a factory and brought to building site and mounted to the foundation by workers. This particular house has 112 m2 of usable area and a 34 m2 of porch (under construction as we speak). This house was our dream for several years since me and my wife got married. The life since year 2019 in the small 20 m2 sauna house / tiny house got quickly crowded with stuff when we had our first child a few years back. Getting this new house built was definitely needed. This time I'm building a circular swingblade sawmill from scratch. The function of the mill is in its name - the blade swings 90 degrees making it possible to cut both ways while moving the carriage up and down the log resulting in dimensional lumber in one pass. I built a chainsaw mill ten years ago and milled lumber that I used for my cabin / sauna house project. Then I built a bandsaw mill five years ago and used the cut lumber to build a partition in my barn I currently call my workshop. Both of them worked great, bandsaw mill was faster than chainsaw mill for sure. But I think I can make an even faster mill and swingblade sawmill in my opinion is just what I'm looking for. There are different types of swingblade sawmills, one type utilizes a railway system where the saw carriage rides on rails so both rails are in the way when loading the logs. I want to build a beam-type mill where the saw carriage is suspended on a beam over the log that sits on a couple of wedges so it doesn't roll off while cutting. There will be no need to clamp the log down. Cut depth and width adjustments are all going to be made on the sawmill beam end frames. And to top it off - it will basically be a portable sawmill due to its build properties but I think it's only going to sit in my yard regardless of the portability.
A short one this time - in this video I'm completing the fabrication on the beam end frame sliders. There was a lot of tinkering with removing welds from the inside of the square tubes, figuring out how to make the slider half tubes more rigid, how to eventually lock the sliders on the horizontal tubes / saw legs etc. But it was fun, "It's the road to the destination not the destination itself" or whatever was said in that manner. :D Getting there slowly. I've been "sitting on" this custom order circular blade for over a year now and I can finally start working on this dream. In this video I'm showing you saw carriage fabrication. I make the saw carriage out of rectangular tube and sheet metal. The legs where the pivot point bearing blocks mount to are 60x40x4mm square tubes. The rear piece is 60x30x2mm and the front cross piece is 40x40x2mm. I made the legs from a thicker material so there is no additional reinforcing needed in the tubes when clamping down the pivot point bearings. Those bearings have horizontal and vertical slots in them so the blade is adjustable in two planes, horizontal and vertical plane. I still need to make proper tensioners that sit under the bearing blocks and have threads on'em so I can precisely adjust the running of the blade. The rollers are just plain bearings on a calibrated shaft with a circlip in the end of it. Really simple and durable. I also made a test beam from materials I had laying around. The final beam will have 20x20x3 square tube rails. The test beam had 20x20x2mm and it was clearly too thin wall thickness due to suffering under all kinds of distortions when welding the rebar cross pieces and diagonals. I am enjoying this build very much and I hope you do too!

In this video I'm sourcing parts - modifying/balancing a belt pulley on a three phase 4 kW electric motor, machining a circular saw blade adapter and showing a steel swing frame fabrication that holds the pillow block bearings and the shaft assembly. This will be the part that swings and makes it possible to cut dimensional lumber fast. I've been "sitting on" this custom order circular blade for over a year now and I can finally start working on this dream. I'm gonna try and use basic tools like angle grinder as much as possible (except lathe) so I'm gonna enjoy this project even more. I hope you will too!

Hauling, Cutting & Splitting Firewood & Log Splitter MOD
Felling dead spruce trees and hauling timber with homemade 4x4 timber trailer (with Forstman hydraulic crane), pulling the trailer with my homemade 4x4 UTV (utility vehicle) and splitting the firewood with my homemade log splitter. The felling was filmed in the beginning of November thus the absence of snow in the first part of the video. I'm also modifying the slide on the wood splitter by adding taller sidewalls so the already split firewood doesn't spill over the edges as much as it did before. It is working almost as well as I want but there are some upgrades that are definitely needed. But all of that next year. Stay tuned for future videos and thank you all for watching. Hydraulic Log Splitter BUILD Part 6 - Wood Tray & TEST
Building hydraulic wood splitter from scratch. Fabricating the wood tray / slide so the split wood is held on the splitter and directed into a IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) crate and can be handled and moved around with a skid steer loader. In this video I'm modifying some of the work I did in the last video - making the wood tray foldable and act as a roof over the splitter when put in transport position. A set of hinges were needed. I joined the pre-bent sheets of steel I used for the wood tray and slide with a plasma cut strip of steel sheet. A tow bar was made so this splitter is now towable behind a car, ATV, UTV or anything that has a 50mm/2" hitch ball on it. The log loader also gets modified - it was sticking out to the side too much and I made it telescopic to it is lifted off the ground in transport position and is safe now. We got a heap of snow last week and also today so I spent quite some time on snow removal to even get to the wood pile I wanted to split. But I was finally able to test this splitter properly which also revealed a couple of things that need to be modified or changed. The wood slide need vertical sidewalls so the split wood doesn't spill over the edges when pushed uphill into IBC tote. Splitter definitely needs a more powerful power source and upping the diameter of the hydraulic ram so it has more power as well without raising the pressure in the hydraulic lines too much. I can reuse the current hydraulic ram in another project in the future. Anyway, the project is more or less finished except modifications mentioned above and a little bit of paint. So I want to say I'll end this series here for a bit and build something else for a while and circle back to this one after even longer testing period which probably reveal everything I need to change, replace or add. Hydraulic Log Splitter BUILD Part 5 - FIRST TEST!
Building a hydraulic wood splitter from scratch. Getting the hydraulics connected for testing in this video. It looks super ugly and not tidy at all as far as hydraulic line routing goes but it works. Finally. After blowing up a couple of old rotten many decades old hoses whilst testing the hydraulic splitter. And yeah - entirely covered the workshop floor with old and new hydraulic fluid. What a mess! Fabricated the steel frame from scratch to my personal liking in previous videos. In this video I'm fabricating a slide for the split wood to be directed straight into a IBC (intermediate bulk container) crate. Due to the lack of power on the timber trailer hydraulic power pack maybe a dedicated hydraulic system on-board the wood splitter is needed. Both the cylinder and valve block are possibly subjects to change, if needed. The splitter has now wheels, hydraulically adjustable 2-& 4-way wedge and a log loading deck. I said I want to get this built in a few weeks and already needed to use it yesterday and as always I don't know what a deadline is. :) Stay tuned for a few more parts in this small series. And finally, I hope, I can use both the 4x4 timber trailer with hydraulic crane and this hydraulic splitter together in a video. And let's not forget the homemade UTV.

Hydraulic Log Splitter BUILD Part 4 - Wedge Linkage
Building a hydraulic wood splitter from scratch. Fixing a bought hydraulic cylinder that had a mount welded on crooked. Fabricating the linkage and linkage mount for the wedge height adjustment system. Making pins for both the log loader table and wedge moving cylinders. Welding and bolting up everything and getting the splitter to the point where it's ready for it's first test run. But came short a couple of hydraulic fittings and couldn't hook up every hose needed to make it run. But I'll get there shortly. If (fingers crossed) I get it running properly it still needs a proper tow bar and stand. Also wood rack and conveyor-ish thingy. But all of that next time. Stay tuned!

Hydraulic Log Splitter BUILD Part 3 - Log Loader & Four Way Wedge
Building a hydraulic wood splitter from scratch. This time I'm fabricating the wedge slot in the splitter body. I made it completely out of Hardox steel and also the four way wedge. The support piece will have extra gussets and angles for extra strength in the back. The wedge itself will most probably stay as skinny as is, except a couple of guides on the sides to prevent it from slipping off the back support. I'm also planning on making additional 6- and 8-way wedges to quicken the firewood production. When it comes to the hydraulics - this is my very first project where I'm 100% in charge for hydraulics and I learn as I go. Thus - switching up components and location of components is normal I guess. I tried to salvage a couple of old cylinders and it is doable for sure and I'll keep'em as spares. But I found it easier to go and get new ones that don't leak and will hold their position when in use while splitting firewood. Especially for the log loader table. This is extremely important that the cylinder used on this does not leak and fail. The log loader table was made out of scrap 40x40x2mm tube and a piece of leftover 6mm S355 steel I used for making the chain housings on my homemade 4x4 timber trailer. I still have the wood tray, tow bar, stand and hydraulic hoses routing to do. And some grease fittings here and there. This build is dictated by the material I have at hand. Everything is morphed together without any "correct" blueprints and the whole build might seem chaotic. Which it definitely is. But bear with me, even this project will be finished as others before it. And finally, I hope, I can use both the 4x4 timber trailer with hydraulic crane and this hydraulic splitter together in a video. And let's not forget the homemade UTV.

Hydraulic Log Splitter BUILD Part 2 - Press Slide, Spool Valve, Wheels & Axle
Building hydraulic wood splitter from scratch. Fabricating the press slide that connects to the hydraulic cylinder rod and presses logs through the 2-,4- or 6-way wedge (still need to be fabricated). This slide consists of mild steel and Hardox steel. Hardox is used on the bottom retainer strips that keep the slide on the edges on the splitter body. Drilling the holes was surprisingly easy, however, the last three holes were a nightmare dulling the drill bits faster I could sharpen them. The rest of the slide is made of mild steel and equipped with grease fittings in strategic places to keep the slide greased up and in good shape. The edges welded to the body are also made from Hardox and I welded them in small 5 cm/2" increments and cooled the work piece down regularly to keep the warping to minimal. I placed the dedicated log splitter spool valve on top of the cylinder but this placement may change due to user ergonomics which I can only test while actually using the splitter. Then there's the Audi 80/90 rear beam axle, all rusted and not wanting to come apart. But there's nothing you can't solve with a hammer and chisel and lots of rust penetrating oil. I salvaged the hubs and mounting plates. It would've been easier to just shorten the damn beam axle itself and use it but I had to make the drums turn around again. The bearings are shot for highway use but I'll clean'em and grease'em up real good and they'll serve this wood splitter for years to come. I made a clean tube frame for the axle and temporarily tack welded it to the splitter to get a feel for the height and working position. I might chop stuff off and weld on again. :)

Homemade Timber Trailer PROPER TEST
Testing homemade 4x4 timber trailer with Forstman hydraulic crane by hauling huge dried up spruce and branches out of the forest. This is a real back saver. It is not as efficient as proper forwarders but is perfect for private use.
Things I want to change or add:
1) replace the separate hydraulic power pack with on-board hydraulics on the UTV;
2) add a telescopic section to the boom to make the work radius bigger
3) find a solution to the trailer vs UTV different turning circles and thus binding of the PTO shaft when sharply cornering
4) add more log dogs to better facilitate branch hauling
5) automatic gearbox on the UTV to make driving easier

UTV Suspension Upgrade
Modifying my homemade UTV's rear suspension to withstand the forces of towing the homemade 4x4 timber trailer. This MOD has been in my head since the day I started heavily loading the UTV's dump bed. It was super nice to ride around without anything loaded on it, nice and soft. But it is made for work not fun, so... Stiffer springs are in order. I want to haul stuff on it without compressing the rear too much and make the UTV squat less and handle better. This suspension MOD now leaves me with a stiff ride when unloaded but gives the capability of hauling SOO MUCH more in the back of the UTV. Since I'm down with the mainstream flu I only managed to throw this video together this week. Next week when the health gets better I will return to the hydraulic wood splitter project. Hydraulic Log Splitter BUILD Part 1 - Steel Frame Fabrication & Sourcing Parts
Building a hydraulic wood splitter from scratch. Recycling an old log splitter for parts like hydraulic hoses and connectors. The old hydraulic cylinder and valve block leak and seem to need thorough repair and are not worthy of use. Thus using new hydraulic cylinder and valve block. Harvesting all the old hydraulic hoses and fittings that seem to be in usable condition. Fabricating the steel frame from scratch to my personal liking and keeping in mind that I can use the big square tube also as an oil reservoir if a dedicated hydraulic system on-board the wood splitter is needed. The temporary hydraulic power pack will be replaced either with a tractor or as previously mentioned - dedicated and more powerful hydraulic system. Both the cylinder and valve block are subjects to change, if needed. The splitter will have wheels, tow bar, hydraulically adjustable 2-, 4- and 6-way wedge and a log loading deck. I want to get this built in a few weeks and already needed to use it yesterday! Stay tuned for a few more parts in this small series. And finally, I hope, I can use both the 4x4 timber trailer with hydraulic crane and this hydraulic splitter together in a video. And let's not forget the homemade UTV.

4x4 Timber Trailer Build - START to FINISH
Building a 4x4 PTO driven timber trailer with hydraulic crane from start to finish. This project has been a dream of mine probably for a decade and now it's reality. The custom PTO shaft between UTV and the trailer still needs to be fabricated.
Trailer specs:
* 28x11-14" tires & 14" rims
* width 1500mm, length 5000mm, height 1900mm
* tandem axles with homemade chain housings
* BMW E39 530D differential with 2.81 gearing (identical to the UTV diffs)
* hydraulic crane with a boom & grapple for easier log loading & handling
* independent hydraulic power pack
* radio controlled hydraulic winch on the boom
* load capacity - 1-1,5 metric tonne
