A Coffee-side Chat

The other day, I was talking with TEAforTheology, and he suggested this topic. I must confess I find this topic a bit daunting. It is very large and encompasses so much ground. Indeed, it is too large for any one chat, so this will be an ongoing series within the Coffee-Side Chat series. So, where to begin? First, I think we will establish the basis for creativity, its origins, and motivations as seen through the lens of what it means to be a Christian. Once this is sorted, we will have a firm basis for any and all future discussions about art, creativity, and Christian faith. Without this basis, art and creativity could be discussed, but not as they interrelate with God and our faith, our relationship with him. This past week I came across a debate on free will. I’ll leave a link in the description area. As I was watching both sides present their case, there was one thing that I noticed to be lacking from either side. Something, that while not shocked by its absence, I was saddened by its absence. It is unfortunate that this was missing, but when mere points of view get argued over, it is often overlooked. What is this, that is what we are going to talk about. Here we go. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. 1 John 2:10,11 –whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. Steps we can take to grow in our genuine faith. So, what steps can we take to grow and mature in our genuine faith, stop the doubts, and stop the occasional repeating of a sin? And I do think this is something to remember. Scriptures Referenced: Psalms 1:1, 2 – Blessed is the man…. Whose delight is in the Law of the Lord and on His law he meditates day and night. So, what are we chatting about this time? Well, Alanpanameno9508 suggested we chat about genuine faith and how we can be genuine in faith, especially when we have doubts, which in part stem from repeating the same sins and an abuse of the Grace of God. It’s a big topic and a most worthy one. I find many who have this same question. And I that is one of the first things we need to recognize; this is a common experience among Christians. Authentic, genuine faith. What is it? As you know, we look at everything through the lens of what it means to be a Christian. And you know, I find our definition of this to be a perfect explanation. Genuine faith is a following of Jesus that involves a relationship with him, leading to studentship from him, leading to a life lived for him based on everything learned. This never has been a bunch of nice-sounding religious words. It is both authentic faith and how growth in that faith happens. Scripture Referenced: 1 Timothy 1:15, 16 – Paul, the worst of sinners and the reason he was shown mercy. That Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who believe in him. 1 John 1:8, 9 - if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make God to be a liar, and his word is not in us. Matthew 18:3 – unless we come to him like little children, we will not enter the kingdom of heaven. John 13:33 – Jesus calls his disciples ‘little children’. 1 Corinthians 3:1 – Paul addresses the Corinthians as infants in Christ. 2 Corinthians 7:8-11 – Godly sorrow leads to repentance, leading to salvation (restoration of a relationship with him). Hebrews 4:15 – Jesus our high priest who what tempted in every way we are but was without sin. 1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation seizes on you that is not one common to others. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear, and he will provide an escape so you can stand up under it. I mean, how did you go from judgmental and hypocritical mixed with pride to authentic vs. role-playing?” Well, since you asked, here we go. This past week, I have enjoyed being in disagreement with a couple of folks. Enjoying disagreement? Yes. Well, not the fact that we disagreed, but in how we dealt with it. Let me explain. And this explanation does come from looking at disagreements through the lens of what it means to be a Christian. Also, I am speaking of Christians disagreeing with other Christians when discussing what the Bible teaches. I am addressing Christians who are honestly pursuing a maturing relationship with Christ. The concern is how we disagree with each other. Topics such as disagreeing with heresies, atheism, or anything other than the above-stated concern are beyond the scope of what is being addressed. Thank you for understanding. Scriptures Referenced: Mark 3:33 - 35 – “Jesus asks who are my mother and brothers…. Whoever does God’s will is my brother, sister, and mother.” We are God’s family. What are we chatting about this time? God telling us not to judge. Well, let’s kick this around. As I began to prepare, I went looking for Scripture passages to find out what all this topic of judging might include. I didn’t assume a point and looked for proof; I went looking to see what the Bible said and then used this to form my opinion, an important distinction. Well, I found ... Scriptures Referenced. 1 John 4:1; 1 Corinthians 14:29; 1 Thessalonians 5:21 – Test, weigh all that is taught and all teachers and hold on to what is good and avoid what is evil. Romans 12:3 - Paul ties sound judgment to living humbly. 1 Peter 4:7 - sound judgment is part of what is needed for the purpose of prayer. 1 Corinthians 6:1 – 6 - it is shameful that the Corinthian Christians had no one in their midst who was able to judge disputes among themselves but rather had to go to court with their problems. Matthew 22:34 – 40 – the greatest command ever given. Romans 13:10 – love does no harm to a neighbor. Galatians 5:14 – 15 - if we do not love, if we bite and devour each other, we need to watch out, or we will be consumed by each other. James 2:13 - that judgment will be merciless to those who show no mercy…. For mercy triumphs over judgment. Matthew 7:1 – 5 - if we get judgmental, the standard we use will be used against us. Romans 2:1 – 4 - in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself. For then you despise the riches of God’s goodness, forbearance, and patience. And do you not know that the goodness of God leads to repentance? Matthew 18:23 – 35 – The unmerciful, unforgiving servant. Romans 14:10 – 13 - Why judge a brother and regard him with contempt? For we all stand before the judgment seat of God, and each will give an accounting of himself. Matthew 10:16 – like sheep among wolves, so be wise as serpents and as harmless as doves. I have had suggestions for the next two chats as well, but your suggestion very well could be the next one after those. Thank you. So, the question we are looking at is: How are we saved? This is a pretty important question, if mean, if we are going to be Christians, it would be helpful to know how we can become one, right? And yes, we are going to kick this around while looking at it through the lens of what it means to be a Christian. Which is being a follower of Jesus, the Christ; which involves a relationship, leading to studentship, leading to a life lived from everything learned. Not one, not the other, but always linked. And, if you think about it, this actually tells us exactly how we are saved: through accepting his gift of a relationship with himself and the Father, one that leads to our learning from him and our living for him. Scripture Referenced: Through God Alone: John 6:44 Jesus tells us in John that without the Father drawing us to him, we can’t get to him Matthew 19:25, 26; Mark 10:26, 27 Who can be saved? He says that with man (the word used to mean all people), this is impossible but with God, all things are possible. Welcome to the Simple Not Shallow Podcast, where the coffee is good, and the conversation is even better. Recently, I’ve been hearing a lot about Calvinism vs Arminianism. Have you ever noticed that when one ism starts talking about a different one, tones get hard, words get harsh, and voices tend to get raised? Aren’t we supposed to be family? This has always bothered me. And since we look at everything here through the lens of what it means to be a Christian. I thought that is what we’d do as we look at this whole Calvinism vs Arminianism thing and see what we can see. And just to get us on the same footing, what we mean when we say Christianity is a following of Jesus the Christ, which involves, first and foremost, a relationship with him, which then leads to studentship from him, leading to a life lived from everything learned. Welcome to the Simple Not Shallow Podcast. My name is Charles, and this is the Coffee Side Chat series. Now, you and I do tend to think of love as an emotion; right? So, I guess the first thing to kick around is whether or not this is an accurate understanding. I mean, is it just an emotion, or is it something more? As I began looking into this, the first thing that struck me was that it seems to be much more than mere emotion. Indeed, based on what I found, we cheapen love by limiting it to just being an emotion. No, no, no… hang with me here as I explain. Scripture Referenced. Luke 10:27ff, Mark 12:30, Matthew 22:37 ~ Greatest commandment: use to show love is not mere emotion. Deuteronomy 6:5 ~ The Greatest Command found in the Old Testament. Leviticus 19:18 ~ The second greatest command found in the Old Testament. Why love fulfills law: Galatians 5:14 ~ love tied to serving. Romans 13:9,10 ~ love fulfillment of law, because love does no harm to a neighbor. 1 Cor 13:4-8 ~ what love does and never fails. 1 Peter 4:8 ~ love forgives 1 John 3:16 ~ This is how we know what love is, Jesus laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 1 John 4:10 ~ This is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Welcome to the Simple Not Shallow Podcast. My name is Charles, and this is the Coffee Side Chat series. So, let me ask you a question. Have you recently been hearing all the talk about the End of Times being upon us? You know, Jesus’ second coming. I have. And I must admit that my first reaction to it all was to say, “Again?” I mean, if I had a dime for every time someone said, “The end is here; Jesus will return in two months,” or the like. I’d be a rich man. But that got me thinking. I wondered if, before getting too wound up over any of this, there was a reason we are told about the second coming, one not so filled with hype? And is there any way to legitimately know when this will happen? Scripture Referenced. Matthew 24:42-51 and Luke 21:34-36 ~ Jesus talking about the destruction of the temple, the end times, and his second coming. Telling us why we need to know these things. To not be deceived or have this sprung like a trap. 2 Peter 3:1-14 ~ Be stirred up to a sincere mind. Knowing this, be the sort of people you ought to be. Be diligent to be found by Jesus in peace, spotless, and blameless. 1 Thessalonians 5:6-9 ~ Since you know the day of the Lord is coming…. Be awake and sober. Not like those who don’t believe, those who are asleep. Put on faith and love as a breastplate and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 2 Peter 3:3ff. ~ Do not allow yourself to be lulled asleep, thinking things don’t matter. That everything will always be as it always has been. Revelation 3:11; 16:15 ~ Jesus is coming quickly so stay awake and hold on to what you know so as to keep your crown and not be shamefully exposed. Revelation 22:12 ~ Jesus is coming soon and bringing a reward to each person based on what that person has done. Matthew 24:36; Mark 13:32; cross reverence Acts 1:7 ~ Only God the Father knows when any of this will happen. 2 Peter 3:10; 1 Thessalonians 5:2; Revelation 3:3; 16:15 ~ Peter, Paul, and John telling us that the second coming will be at an unexpected time, like a thief unexpectedly showing up to rob a home. It will be when folks are saying, “There is peace, there is safety.” 2 Peter 3:10 ~ The second coming, though at an unexpected time, will be unmistakable. Kind of like an earthquake; you won’t overlook it. Additional Scripture: Matthew 24:45 – 25:30 ~ Jesus is kindly letting us know that this is no game. These tell us what happens to those who do not stay awake, alert, and live out what they know. A warning is given ahead of time so preparations on our part can be made. Revelation 22:14 ~ This I see as an encouragement. He is saying, Hold on, I’m coming. And you will be blessed if you have lived from what you know of me. So, let me ask, what is your first reaction to the word repentance? I mean, did you just cringe a little bit? I don’t know about you, but I find that, too often, this word is one of the big, bad, negative words in the Christian vocabulary. When it is one of its most positive words. To see this will mean that we need to look at this through the same lens of what it means to be a Christian. Which is a following of Christ that involves a relationship leading to studentship leading to a life lived from what is learned. All three altogether, not one or the other. But all are intrinsically linked and in balance with each other. Scriptures Referenced: 2 Corinthians 7:10 ~ Godly sorrow brings repentance, leading to salvation. In this episode, we will do this by delving into the common experience of feeling that God has withdrawn from us as Christians. Many of us have encountered this feeling where he seems so distant, though there was a time when we felt so close to him. What’s up with that? In looking into this, I came up with two suggestions. In this episode, we are going to talk about the question: Who is Jesus? I know. In a fairly short video, are we going to explore this question fully? Yeah, no. But we are going to talk about a framework you can use while pursuing your relationship with him while learning who he is. So, what comes to mind when you hear the question, who is Jesus? You might be saying, “He is God.” Yes, but is that all we know about who he is? What else can you think of? “Lord and Savior?” Yes. What else? “Son of God, Our redeemer?” Yes, what else? “He died on the cross and was raised for our sins?” Yes, that is what he did, but who is he? “You going to keep asking that question or get on with the chat?” Alright, I’ll move on. In this episode, we are going to consider the questions: what is prayer, and why is it so important? Many have talked about prayer, going into depth on the hows and whys of it all. So… what can a man, even one standing in these hallowed halls while chatting over a cup of coffee, contribute to the insights of such heavy hitters as these and other thoughtful scholars? In this episode, we are going to consider the question, what is Christianity? Or to phrase it another way, what does it mean to be a Christian? I mean, the goal here is to view every topic discussed through the lens of what it means to be a Christian. We should probably discuss what it means to be a Christian. Right? Scripture: It is a Relationship: Revelation 3:20 ~ I stand at the door and knock, if anyone opens the door, I will come in. I will dine with him and he with me. (The relationship begins. Doesn’t say, learn from me or do these things for me and I will dine [spend time] with you. Just open the door). Ephesians 5:1 ~ we are called beloved children. 1 John 4:7-21 ~ Those who do not love (love is always relational) do not even know God. (So the relationship must first be established before all else). Matthew 22:34-40 ~ The greatest commands are to love. (Relationship is a must.) Involves Studentship (Discipleship): Matthew 11:29 ~ Take my yoke upon you and LEARN from me. (The relationship means to be learning.) Matthew 28:19 ~ Tells us to go make Disciples, not converts. We are to be teachers and trainers; this implies the studentship that is part of the relationship. Yes, this is a very brief look at the Great Commission, and I do not mean to remove any other aspect from it. But I am simply highlighting the studentship aspect that is integral to it. John 15:15 ~ Jesus calls us friends because we know (have learned) what he has taught and made known to us. Involves Doing, the Religion aspect: James 2:17 ~ Faith without works is dead. It is not faith at all. A loving relationship that does nothing is not a loving relationship at all. James 1:27 ~ Religion is a way of life, not mere church-time worship. John 15:10 ~ Doing results from abiding in love (actively pursuing a relationship with God). If you abide, you keep the commands. Interesting that the command then given (v.12) is to love each other as he loves us. Examples of studentship and doing religion without a relationship: John 5:39 ~ Pharisees and Scribes pore over scriptures and miss out on Jesus. Luke 11:42; Matthew 23:23 ~ Doing religious things but neglecting what is really important. 1 Corinthians 13 ~ This chapter shows the true value of trying to study and do things without love. Without a relationship to Jesus, they are worthless. Can you love without doing?
