Hollowtech II safety check
A quick and simple check to confirm your Hollowtech II bottom bracket and axle are fine.
Note:
Shimano Hollowtech II crank-arms do have a silly design - but the axle and bearing design is a pretty light, stiff and safe one (except on the high-end superlight cranks where everything is so thin there is no margin for any defects or problems down the road). Square taper bottom brackets last a lot longer, but can break due to material fatigue without enabling a practical way for regular checks (the cracks start between the axle and the crank arm - so the crank arms must be removed to check, which is highly impractical).
