How Good is the M1 Carbine? Well, it is a fun historical shooter. With some great American History attached to it. In 1938 the US Army made a request for a lightweight carbine that was a select-fire gun chambered in the .30 caliber pistol round. The M1 Garand was great as we all know but it was heavier and more cumbersome. The proposal wasn’t finalized until 1940 however. Winchester was privately developing a hunting rifle, that was in a different caliber, it was this design that was entered by Winchester into the 1941 US Army challenge in September and it was this rifle that ultimately won. In December of 1941, Japan attacked the US Navy in Pearl Harbor. Which officially brought the US into World War 2. The Winchester rifle was assigned the designation of US Carbine, Caliber 30, M1. We all call it the M1 Carbine.
