According to Columbia University's Earth Institute, scientists know more about space than the ocean. As a result, the vast majority of the creatures lurking beneath the surface may as well be aliens. Meanwhile, Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada, researchers believe that 91 percent of these marine animals are still unknown to us.

Many of the 235,000 or so species we do know about have adapted to their environment through unusual camouflage, bioluminescence, and mating habits, resulting in some truly bizarre appearances.
