Tony Matthews: Tuba Train (for Euphonium or Tuba & Piano)

2

Originally written for the Tuba, this work has been performed far more on the Euphonium.

The movements of this work are all self-contained and work when played as stand-alone pieces. However, the real power of this music comes when the work in played as whole and the train of thought, that presents itself, is taken through worlds of turmoil, despair, love and finally, joy.

The solo part can be performed on both Euphonium or Tuba. Where the notes are out of range or tricky for the Euphonium, the Tuba variation is shown as an ossia in the full score. There are full parts for both instruments.

There are six movements

0:00 1. Dreams: More of a nightmare actually.
2:51 2. Chase: Fast and Frenetic. A wild flight leading to a frightening end.
4:47 3. Wasteland: A barren land, a void of eerie winds and sounds.
6:20 4. Ballad: A pop ballad with a twist.
10:26 5. Waltz: A light romp, with a twinkle in the eye and absolutely no wrong notes.
12:40 6. Speed Wrap: A fast, lively finale, where previous themes help to wrap up the whole work up to make an exciting and exhilarating conclusion.
