The Pandemic and Teens' Mental Health
The mental health fallout from the pandemic could linger for years.
This week on 51/49, James follows up on a question posed by Saagar Enjeti on a Breaking Points segment (https://youtu.be/uurGOOBOtjM?t=667), and examines what effects the pandemic has had on adolescent and teen development, the long term outlook and prognosis for their mental health, and what lasting impacts it might have on the overall health of society.
Some facts:
- June 2020 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that 63 percent of young people reported experiencing substantial symptoms of anxiety and depression.
- According to a study released by the CDC (2020), more than a quarter of people surveyed between the ages of 18-24 have seriously considered suicide in past 30 days and three quarters have experienced more than 1 adverse mental or behavioral health symptoms.
- Oakland Unified reported that almost 33% of students were chronically absent as of mid-September (2021). Among transitional kindergartners to fifth graders, the rate was higher than 37%. Two years ago, only 14% in that age group were chronically absent.
