Squid Game Review

Why is everyone talking about this show? If you asked me I’d say it’s because people are naturally drawn to simple premises done really well. Squid game could’ve easily followed a very structured format of following a handful of characters across several dangerous games.. and if it had.. it’d have still been very entertaining.. but what they actually ended up doing was something a little bit more sophisticated than that. Things quickly get tense as the participants find out the stakes of the games themselves, with all of them having been selected because they were in serious debt for one reason or another, some even think that it might actually be preferable to the cold, unforgiving situations they've put themselves in. And if all of that sounds really dark.. it is.. but.. there’s definitely a big douse of anime styled optimism and edge to Squid Game, and normally I’d say that whether or not that’s good is going to fall down to your personal taste, but between the occasional unnecessary levity from the main character and a lot of the familiar tropes towards the end, I felt as if they didn’t borrow from anime entirely in a way that’s beneficial for the show. There is still nuance and sophistication to the cast don't get me wrong, but there is a tenancy to go deep into familiarity. Either way, these are my thoughts, be sure to let me know what you think!
