He was in some serious denial not being able to emotionally handle that we are a sundered version. As far as Amaurot goes it is implied that he recreated it for us. He wanted for us to remember and he needed Hythlodaeus shade to give us our crystal since he couldn’t bring himself to do it. When talking with the Ondo is when some of this is implied.
