Louisiana judge Michelle Odinet said she would take an unpaid leave of absence after a video recorded her using a racial slur while watching security footage of a foiled burglary outside her home.

The judge of the City Court of Lafayette, La., said she was on a sedative at the time the video was made and had no memory of the episode.

After an unknown source released the video to the local news media, several civic groups including the Lafayette branch of the N.A.A.C.P. called on the judge to resign, and criminal defense lawyers asked the judge to recuse herself from their cases.

Judge Odinet’s lawyer, Dane Ciolino, said in an interview on Thursday morning that he had notified the judiciary committee of the judge’s intent to take leave without pay. He also confirmed that the judge used a racial slur in the video, which did not show the faces of the people who spoke in it.
