At a recent conference, the European Commission made it clear that a new law to combat what it calls "fake news" and "disinformation" on social media is on its way in the Union. Civil rights activists are now expressing concern that the law could have a chilling effect on democratic discourse.
The "Digital Services Act" (DSA), as the law is known, includes heavy fines for social media companies that do not obey Brussels' new guidelines on what news can and cannot be shared by EU citizens.
On 17 March, the European Commission organised the Ditchley Conference in preparation for the new legislation. One of the most prominent speeches was given by Danish politician Margrethe Vestager (Radical Left), executive vice-president of the Commission responsible for "a Europe fit for the digital age", who has been one of the most active contributors to the proposal.
- We now understand the influence of digital platforms and social media on our societies. This becomes even more prominent in this war that is also being fought online," Vestager said during her speech, referring to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
