presents episode 304: Doug McGuff
with Wild Warrior Nutrition podcast

1983 Univ of Florida & Nautilus did study of weight training...
-older, frail women with osteoporosis
-had to devise training program that would be very safe
-careful of amount of force that would be placed onto bone
-so, protocol was very slow lifting and lowering of weight
-force=mass x acceleration
-they removed acceleration as much as possible

Findings...
-3 times a week was too much, no time to recover
-went to 2 times a week:
Result: rate of progress was much faster
-so, took this protocol and applied to athletes
Result: athletes showed better progress as well
-better lean mass and strength

Findings...
-they had stumbled upon a way to:
-make the stimulus more aggressive
-the muscle was under a more continuous load, so
~deeper, more rapid fatiguing of the skeletal muscle
~which triggered a more powerful stimulus
And...
-the time between workouts had
to be extended to allow for recovery
-this became the template for the book
