Is it possible to have victory over severe anxiety? This is my testimony of how God set me free from anxiety! Agoraphobia recovery is possible in the powerful name of Jesus Christ! Amen!

I am joined with Jack from ChristianConvos for another Mental Health Monday where we tackle psychology from a Christian perspective! Today we talk about my experience with exposure therapy for agoraphobia. It is our hope that this video gives Christians the permission they need to understand that a believer can struggle with agoraphobia, but not to just end there. Through faith alone in Jesus Christ, we have the capability to overcome agoraphobia and have success. This is agoraphobia as a testimony to faith. Anxiety kept me from leaving my house for years. I went on a long journey to not only learn how to treat agoraphobia, but how to stop agoraphobia from ruining my life. This included support groups, cognitive behavioral therapy, distance therapy, etc.

What is agoraphobia? When I heard agoraphobia explained as a fear of open spaces, fear of crowds and being afraid to leave the house, it seemed like such a specific phobia that had no answers. I was so desperate to overcome agoraphobia that I would spend hours searching for how to cure agoraphobia, symptoms of agoraphobia, agoraphobia treatment, and anything that pertained to my mental wellness. Life with agoraphobia meant mental health education, psychiatry, coping mechanisms, cognitive restructuring, therapy (sometimes online therapy), other forms of counseling, self improvement, leading me to investigate the complications of health and agoraphobia. Being agoraphobic is challenging, especially during the daytime when one relies on public transportation and finds themselves in closed spaces often. The intense fear brought on depression. I found that the psychologist could provide the diagnosis, but could not fully understand the agoraphobia symptoms. This is where the necessity for mental illness awareness comes into play, so that people may understand more than what the textbook says the agoraphobia definition is. Wellness and mental illness help would be so much more achievable if there was a more personal understanding of mental health conditions. How to treat agoraphobia becomes much more centered on the individual and equips that individual with the tools they need to understand how to overcome agoraphobia. With any anxiety disorder, there is often anticipatory anxiety. Living with anxiety, especially debilitating anxiety, is hard because many do not know how to help someone with anxiety disorders. Many know what anxiety feels like, so they feel they are able to offer anxiety disorder help; however, when it comes to the relationship between anxiety and agoraphobia, it is much more than generalized anxiety. I remember tuning into any anxiety disorder documentary to have my anxiety symptoms explained, find anxiety relief techniques in order to cure anxiety, and anything else that could offer anxiety help in order to end anxiety. My life revolved around anxiety symptoms and a constant search for how to stop anxiety or anxiety attacks. To overcome anxiety would mean to regain normalcy because many do not understand the link between agoraphobia and social anxiety. Panic attacks are another real concern for those who struggle because of the common link between panic disorder and agoraphobia. Panic attacks bring on a feeling of impending death out of nowhere. The DSM-VI used to have the diagnosis of panic disorder with agoraphobia; however, the DSM-V has made a clear distinction between agoraphobia vs panic disorder. When it comes to how to stop panic attacks or seeking panic attack help, it can be very difficult due to the fact that both agoraphobia and panic disorder can provoke one another. Furthermore, panic disorders have only been exacerbated through the current state of the world with “covid panic” becoming a reality. Mental health awareness is very important because that is when things like agoraphobia recovery stories become possible.
