Performance notes:

Erik Satie’s “Trois Gymnopedie” are musically rather simple, and yet they are also quite challenging to interpret elegantly. They are known the world over and have become common recital pieces, have been found in movies and television commercials, and even have been adapted and arranged by the likes of Blood, Sweat, and Tears and others. There is some debate over the inspiration for these three simple pieces. Some suggest it fits the mold of his self-created term “furniture music”—intended to provide ambience to a space. Others attribute to it an ironic reference to ancient Spartan physical contests. And still others suggest they were inspired by a novel by his friend, Alexis Roland-Manuel (“Salammbô”), or a poem which was published concurrently with the second of these.
For a wind player, the primary technical challenge is to maintain proper sound throughout the long phrases, but that is perhaps outweighed by the artistic challenge of creating a compelling musical phrase. The player should endeavor to relate each note to the one before and the one after, keeping the dynamic arc as smooth as possible, and without sudden bumps or dips. This can be a challenge with some wide intervals along the way. The tone should be carefully managed, and any hint of roughness or brash timbre should be avoided.
This arrangement is provided in two keys which allow for performance by any brass instruments. Below are the practical choices for each version of the piece:

G Minor Version
Cornet or Trumpet in Eb Flugelhorn,
Cornet, or Trumpet in Bb
Cornet or Trumpet in C
