Two women dead after axe attack at school

Two women in their 50s have been killed in the axe attack at Malmö Latin secondary school. An 18-year-old man who is a student at the school is arrested on suspicion of murdering them with an axe and knife.
Shortly after 5pm on Monday afternoon, an alarm was raised about several injured people at the Latin school in Malmö. When police and ambulance arrived at the scene, two injured people were found.
The injured, two women in their 50s who were employed at the school, were taken to hospital by ambulance.
One person, an 18-year-old man, was arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of murder. He reportedly called 911 himself and confessed to the murders.
Late in the evening, the police announced that the two women had died. Their families have been informed.
- It is with great sadness that we can state that two people lost their lives in this terrible incident and our thoughts go out to their families and friends, says Petra Stenkula, chief of the Malmö police area, in a press release.
Police assume that the man acted alone, but the motive for the attack is unclear.
About 50 people were at the school when the incident occurred. During the evening, the school building has been evacuated and searched and, according to the police, there is currently nothing to suggest that there are other perpetrators. Investigation measures have also been carried out at the school and other locations.
- We were on the scene early and were able to arrest the perpetrator. Now we have a lot of work to do to understand what happened and the underlying motive for this terrible incident," says Åsa Nilsson, head of the Malmö North local police area.
The police will hold a press conference about the incident on Tuesday. The press conference will be held at the Justice Centre in Malmö at 09.30.
