A pharmacist went to the police because he was being extorted. As part of the investigation, the police looked into and asked questions as to why he was vulnerable to extortion. The pharmacist told law enforcement that he had been filing prescriptions, particularly for Oxycontin / Oxycodone under questionable circumstances.

The police were able to track down the people who were extorting, and successfully convicted them. But the police weren't done - they used the pharmacists own reports to prosecute the pharmacist for violations of the controlled substances act.

The pharmacist claims the police never gave him a Miranda warning, and so his statements should have been suppressed.

In today's decision, we review when the police do have to give a Miranda warning, when they don't, and once again learn the dangers of being a drug dealer ...
