This is the scary moment a student's fish tank overflowed during a deadly 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Japan.

Footage shows the room in central Tokyo shaking violently, which forces water from the tank to spill out onto her desk.

The student, who has not been named, said the fish and her tech equipment - which was alongside the tank - escaped unscathed.

She added: "I live on the 13th floor of an apartment building so I could really feel the walls start to shake.

"Thankfully both me and the fish are okay but it was a really scary moment."

The quake hit large areas of northeast Japan and has left at least two people dead, with 160 more injured.

Damage to infrastructure has been less severe than expected, according to local reports.

Two million homes initially lost power and a bullet train was derailed, but none of its passengers were hurt.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning this morning (17/03), the same day the video was filmed.
